I will be in Victoria later this month, if any of you want to give any decent FSR's to try for decent black bear hunting around Victoria, it would be greatly appreciated...

Hey Harry, as you are probably aware a lot of the roads near Victoria are gated, so one often has to drive past the end of Lake Cowichan to access hunting areas. That is a fairly long trip, but you could try to get behind Shawnigan Lake which is fairly close to Victoria. Just depends if the gate on the Kokisilah main is open or not. No way to know for sure without driving there...about an hour and a bit from Victoria. Follow the signs to Shawnigan Lake and just before the lake take the left turn which will take you around the west side of the lake, ie. the lake will be on your right as you go around it. When you get to the T in the road go left and keep driving. At the end of the pavement take the right hand gravel road and in fifteen minutes or so, it will take you to the gate location. Lots of area to explore behind the gate.

Just be careful not to get back to a locked gate. Cowichan towards Nitnat best option.

South island sucks for access. Somebody must have given away the store a long time ago and the forested areas are mostly private property.

However, if you’re ok driving past Cowichan you’ll find really nice country with a fair number of bears.

If you’ve got some time, drive past nitinat towards bamfield or north past Campbell river.
