Went to the LEH public consultation in Kamloops yesturday and was dissapointed with the turnout for this area!! the first session had about 10guys the second only 5 and when I left there was onlt two people who had showed for the third. It was a very informative and interesting meeting and two hours wasn't long enought. With 5 of us we had enough issues and questions, solutions to go on for another 2 hours.
GET OUT GET HEARD! or don't bitch about LEH.

Happy what was one of the more interesting things you took from this forum? at least from the govt side?

Man there was sooo much covered, Jesse the rep was very well informed. I think the system he has come to like is the points system used in washington, where you earn points for every year you put in, that increases your odds for getting drawn. ie you put in for Goat for 10 years your name gets put in the draw 10x more than someone who only put in one year. We talked about the systems used in Alta and Sask, and talked about the problems with them and advantages. One issue we talked about was the amout of people who get drawn and don't hunt- ie they let out 256 goat draws, only 111 of those hunters bought tags. We discussed a system that requires you to purchase your tag within two weeks of getting your draw or it reverts back to the next person on the list. We covered acess to areas and maps need to be more readily available, private land owners phone numbers,... also info about area possibly info like cow to bull ratio or sucess rates for that area (didn't like this idea only thing missing was an arrow pointing to animals on map). We covered multiple hunts ie two animal draws, Group hunts, Biologists. One Idea tossed around was General open season, we were asked if we wanted GOS or LEH. Our sugestion was a GOS with restrictions and LEH without restrictions. My thought process behind this was if you want to hunt for example bull moose in 3-18 you can, it just has to be a spike\fork bull. But if you get the draw you can go after any bull.
There is so much more we talked about it was very good.

It's tough to attend when it's on a long weekend and the venue is TBD. It doesn't sound very organized.

I was at the first session and I thought it went pretty good. Pretty much as was already stated above. The one thing that shocked me was the amount of hunters that dont even use their LEH. As stated above for Goat in region 3, 246 tags are issued by ministry with only about 1/2 of those guys actually buying tags. Out of those 120 or so that bought tags, only 17 goats were harvested. The Bios want 46 goats killed each year. So as we know in 2012 all the unused tags will go to the guide outfitters.

So we talked about how do we get those guys that were drawn to actually go hunting. We came up with ideas about better maps, a disclaimer about each unit that might say if there are road access issues etc etc. Also we said we would like to see a option of giving the tag back if not used. i.e We all know work/family things come up and sometimes you cant go hunting. If this happened you could hand in your LEH and another name drawn. Obviously the next guy may not be able to go on short notice but there are those that can leave at a moments notice.

It was pretty informative and I would suggest everyone making their town meeting.

Not organized? The schedule is below. If your long weekend isn't worth putting a couple of hours towards bettering the LEH system, you don't have any right to bitch about it, IMO.

Hmmm ... maybe the turn out was low because most who put in for LEH's understand it for what it is ... a lottery draw ... and they don't gripe when not drawn. Be interesting to see further attendances.

I'll make the Chilliwack one and pretty much be against most of what Happy reported ... unless something new is brought forward.

Thnx for the report though and good to see you attended.

I had promised my daughter we'd go out for Youth Season on Sept 1st & 2nd, as it is her first year with a hunting license. We'll see though I may make the Chilliwack meeting, depends on if we go and if so what time we get back. Shame about the date.

Thanks for the actual schedule. The original post was full of TBDs. It would be interesting to go but since I'm out of town for the weekend, driving back (3 hours one way) is silly. I haven't bitched about the LEH anyway.

Both my daughters got there huntin' licence's and are looking forward to going out this Saturday. It's a shame that the "Consultations are taking place now. when most hunters are in the midst of hunting (further up north) or are getting ready to???? Is this a coincidence??? Always bin lucky with draws,(knock on wood), never had much reason to complain.

Fresh- Until you've heard the problems facing our LEH, You don't have a clue what you would support, I had alot of opinions that changed after listening to the other hunters and the gov't side...go..listen...

Fisher-Dude

Mik - there's no "conspiracy" with having the sessions now - the timeline for this consultation is extremely tight for the fellow who is doing the study. He's doing his best to cover the province, giving people a chance to share their ideas for improvements, and still get the report done on time. If you look at his schedule for going from town to town, you will see he's covering a lot of ground fast! The other goal is to have the study done in time for possible implementation of changes for the draw next spring - a positive step instead of dragging things out and taking years like we are so used to.

If people are unable to attend, they can still send their suggestions to him via email at jessezeman@shaw.ca by September 9th.

Sorry! but personally I think those long weekend dates suck. Some of the biggest hunting population bases and the majority of people who might attend are away on a preplanned holiday or trip. ( If I believed in Conspiracies I would almost think that whom ever set those dates up doesn't really want our opinion. Just sounds way to convienent for me.

If you can't get there, get your thoughts written down in an email and send it to the email adress above.

Several of us here personally know Jesse, he wants your opinion.

There is no conspiracy, no need for tinfoil hats.

I went to the one here in town last night. Definitely worth the time and effort to go. There are problems with the system and they want our input in helping to fix those problems. What an opportunity, let's not waste it.

As for the timing of some of the meetings, check out the schedule there aren't many days between most of the meetings, it's one guy doing it all, and he has very little time to hand in his research.

happygilmore

Fresh,
Example-With some draws we are taking lets say 3 goats out of the 6 that the biologists want taken, if we don't start improving our system so we start taking our quota they will alocate the three from the resident hunter leh and give them to the guide/outfitters. now we only get three goats.

I don't know when you were last drawn but for me its been 14yrs!! I put in for goat the past 2 years at 2:1 odds and got nothing-then I find out less than half the people who got my draw will even buy a goat tag.
Maybe in your little corner, your odds are good and you've been lucky but we need to think about the big picture and create a system we can all be happy with.
Happy out..
