Nice fish! what it run, 34lbs ?

I always was awed at the big springs, when they were finally in the boat. Even today I love a big spring, a natural wonder.

Anybody hear about a run of big fish coming in north of Gold River? Somebody was telling me it was a seven year return, and the fish can run 60lbs plus. Moocher Bay area??

Nootka hasnt had their run of slabs come in yet.
The best so far this year was a run that averaged between 26-31lbs about 6 weeks ago.
Hope the big boys are just late....

take a look at the TYEE club - this is one thing I want to do before I die. To be apart of the club you must catch a 30LB + spring, on a 20LB test line in a ROW BOAT!! here is the link http://tyeeclub.org/photo-gallery.htm (http://tyeeclub.org/photo-gallery.htm) .

Please tell me it's not so!!!!!! I used to fish out front of the Tyee Club in Campbell River with my dad and those people were the most arrogant SOB's I ever encountered. They thought they owned the entire area. They wouldn't even take John Wayne as a honoury member. I bet most clubs would jump all over something like that.

Hmm - well I hope not, the club has been around since the 30's - I'm planning a trip next year hopefully theres still some 30+LB's springs left!!

Ha..funny...

I did that when I was about 12...

(Although, to be honest, I like salmon that are 30lbs and down. Easier to filet, easier to cook and generally better all around eating.)

did you catch the 30 pounder ?

I caught a 42lb when I was 26 on 20lb test in a twelve foot alum. and 9.5hp motor. At thirteen that fish probably felt like a hundred pounds. It took my 25min the land and I remember shaking when I finally got him in. Congrats to the kid, it's something he won't soon forget.

Mr. Dean,
Ya you got that right . It starting to get a little hard to take, two years in a row for him with two forty under his belt now. But I keep taking him down to the basement and let look at the old man 54er hang on the wall that I caugth 30 years ago.
But he said Dad " Iam only Thirteen" and I have alot of years to bet you.
Guess I created a monster. He is HOOKED now..............

did you catch the 30 pounder ?

I caught several 30+ pounders from 12-15 yrs old, usually form a 9 ft zodiac, and using pretty rudimentary gear. I lived on the ocean back then...

I'd liek to say it as skill, but mostly it was luck......Like much fishing. You can get "on" the fish, you can use appropriate lures, etc...But the difference between catching a 25lb salmon and a 30 lb salmon is pretty much luck.

PS catching a big 50 lb + salmon is alot of fun, but they are no better eating.

There seems to be a good run of springs coming down. We fished Kyoqout last weekend and caught many springs, the average size was about 22-24 lbs with several in the thirties and one 44 lb landed.
