Chalk one up for the good guys

Official Press Release from Arizonans for Wildlife, the HSUS created group that began the Ban Wild Cat Hunting in Arizona ballot initiative:

Wild Cat Protectors -

A statement from Kitty Block, Acting President & CEO for The Humane Society of the United States:

Facing an increasingly competitive state and national landscape, we are suspending efforts on our citizens’ initiative to ban trophy hunting of wild cats in Arizona. This difficult decision is the result of a perfect storm of local obstacles and emerging national issues and does not reflect Arizona voters’ enthusiasm for this proposal to ban inhumane trophy hunting practices.

We are so very grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who collected tens of thousands of signatures and to our coalition partners that joined The HSUS in this effort. I can only imagine how disappointing this news must be for you, and I am sorry. HB2244 and HB2404, which were passed last year by the Arizona legislature has have had a detrimental and chilling effect on grassroots initiatives like ours – making volunteer gathering more difficult due to the onerous strict compliance standard and causing paid petitioners too costly to hire.

This burden is compounded by national issues that currently demand our attention. There are increasing challenges facing wild animals at the federal level, and key government agencies have become ever more complicit in the wanton killing of wildlife by trophy hunters and others. This dramatic urgency at the federal level makes a more concentrated effort on national legislative and litigation strategies essential. We also believe that those approaches will hold much greater promise for the protection of wildlife in the immediate future. The record backs this up. In recent years, humane advocates have restored protections for gray wolves under the Endangered Species Act; successfully fought against attempts by Congress to remove those protections; defeated multiple attempts to increase trophy hunting of bears, bobcats, and mountain lions; and fought the imports of African lion and elephant trophies by American trophy hunters. With partners at the national and regional level, we’ll do still more. We must, and are, currently increasing resources on that front.

We’re disappointed in this outcome, but we look forward to rejoining this and other battles in the state in the future. Together, we’ve built a grassroots movement for wildlife, a movement that is strong, dedicated, and well-organized. We’ll continue to advocate for animals and redouble our efforts to introduce necessary reforms at the Arizona Game and Fish Department, too often the creature of special interests including trophy hunters and trappers. And we’ll continue to raise awareness about the cruelty of trophy hunting and trapping and build public support for future reforms.

Kellye Pinkleton, director of the initiative, said, “We have been truly overwhelmed with the support the campaign has received in the state and around the nation. Our incredible volunteers and coalition partners have done a remarkable job of educating communities throughout Arizona, from Maricopa County to Yavapai County to Navajo County. These citizen educators have shared the cruelty inflicted upon mountain lions and bobcats through trophy hunting and trapping with a broader pubic. We thank all of our wild cat protectors for their selfless dedication to protecting Arizona’s wildlife and their dedication to stopping the senseless killing of Arizona’s wild cats. It is clear that the growing grassroots movement our supporters have helped build is not going away.”

Please join us for an All-Volunteer call next Thursday at 6pm where Kitty Block will be joining the campaign staff and available if you have questions or comments. Please email info@azforwildlife.com for conference call details.

Good.
And looks great on them.

HSUS is one of The MOST interfering, meddlesome and intrusive collection of crazed anti's out there.
They overtly try to effect legislation and sentiment to their benefit world wide.
The shenanigans they employed when I was engaged with CITES were nauseous to the extreme.

Nice to see the Arizona Folks booted them out on their asses on this one! :D

Congrats!

That said, what they present here is their basic template for disruption of a huge scale.
Something to keep in mind, for they, and their kind, are VERY much active here in Canada, and BC.

Do you think we would have lost the grizzly hunt if sportsmen stood up and fought like they did in AZ? All we heard was that it was socially unacceptable and yet the HSUS was saying the same thing about lion hunting? United sportmen can make a difference.

Was just speaking about that exact thing today with my hunting partner. The major difference between us here in Canada and the south of the border folks. For whatever reason we are unable to unite and have our voice be heard. Do the vast majority just not care? All that I know is the way we are going about things ain’t workin’

it’s a real head scratcher.

did anyone else read the bills ?
from another site
Recently passed laws, HB2404 and HB2244, are intended to severely restrict the citizen initiative and referendum process and, if those laws go into effect, they will exponentially increase the cost of citizen initiatives and referenda and will impose unnecessary burdens on Arizona’s citizens designed to limit the people’s power to legislate. Left unchallenged, these bills will likely be followed by additional and increasingly restrictive legislation in the future, ultimately leading to extinction of the Arizona initiative process.

Nobody got the boot, no hunters won anything, purely a bureaucratic move to build their strength of governing, stifling the common man

it’s a real head scratcher. Most hunters are unable to form a constructive discussion to justify what the are doing, so leave the battles up to larger organizations. Most feel they are arguing from a weak standpoint, likely due to the oppressive attitude of anti- groups

I'd add that the only fighting of bad initiatives that most hunters in BC do is bitching a bit with their buddies or maybe on the internet. They don't get off their ass and actually do anything. And then when they blame the BCWF when bad initiatives become law. There was a thread here during the grizzly hunt fiasco with links to the feedback site and politicians to contact it had very few views and about the only posts were a few bumps from 3 or 4 guys to try to keep it at the top, to try to get people here to do something. But nope no one wanted to open up a thread describing how to do something they go straight to the shit storm argument threads with zero talk of what to do. Huge talk before the rally at the leg a few years back, only a few hundred people show up.

I'm pretty much ready to tune out apathy has always been an issue for hunters and its at an all time low. I think the internet has actually made it worse it gathers bitching and infighting and people think that's doing their part. As we see that accomplishes nothing. I find myself thinking lately I don't have kids, I'm in my 50s, fug it.. I'll just hunt and not worry about the future.

The Law in BC and Canada are extremely horrible, as if written by truly crazed antis. Our current system is totally happy to create a process is the punishment scenario at any given opportunity. With the right combo of anti derived lies/public mischief (a violation of CC 140 is nothing to antis. Most have some sort of criminal record already and could care less about firearms ownership or travel to the US. Highly unlikely they'd even be prosecuted let alone actually serve any time) ANYONE - Any of you Hunters and Shooters out there reading this (even your archery) could be deprived of their passion on nothing more than the say so of prohibitionist extremists. It happens all the time! Only a sociopath would think that it's worth putting someone through such a process to prevent legal activities. To them, "saving" or "preventing the murder of" something like a Cougar or Coyote even is well worth any risk of prosecution. Most of these people are afflicted with narcissism to the max and care only for what they perceive as their feelings.

I never did get the idea of sharing antis sentiments on Hunting/Firearms/Freedom platforms but fair enough! Keep your enemies close and all that. I've had this explained to me by some very wise experts. I am also speaking from some personal experience here in addition to stories from others in our community of Canadian Firearms Aficionados.
