View Full Version : Whitetail Hunters Post Your Photos

Everyone knows I am a muley nut but most don't know I was raised by a whitetail nut. My dad has always held whitetails up in high regard and raised me and my brother in the whitetail hunting heritage. While I might talk the monster mule deer language calling whitetails 'dinky dog rat deer' it has all been tongue in cheek and for fun. I grew up in the tradition that hunting was actually to be fun. After a day's hunt, sitting around the campfire, poking fun and laughing and joking was all part of the allure of 'The Hunt'. I think that internet hunting sites started that way back in the early 2000s but now everything is taken literally and things are way too serious. Lets get back to having fun. Lets post up your whitetails, big, small and inbetween. Lets see new and old. Hanging poles, back of the truck, back of the backpack, tongues hanging out or photos cleaned up, live bucks, dead bucks, it don't matter. Lets see them all. I think I have figured out the posting photo problems on HBC. I use Imgur but it takes 2 devices for me to post. If anyone has problems posting, I believe I or another member could post for you just post up your problem or shoot me a PM. Let's see some BC whitetails!

Great idea.
It would be nice if we could keep it to BC deer.
Nice buck and a great picture.

That is a Region 3 buck from back in 2004. Felt like David Thompson as I floated the river with that buck out front.

I’m not much of a whitetail hunter, this is my first and only whitetail that I’ve ever shot from this past year.

Gotta like that one. Like the dark antlers. I've only hunted up you way once for late season WT, made a quick trip to help a buddy move, so time was limited.
Called in a stinky old mule deer that I couldn't pass on, ended my hunt.

Heres an oldie from my gallery, I would see one buck like this one or so every year while I lived in the EK, it was sometimes a day or two after the season. If it was during the season it was either going 60 mph or it was standing in plain site mid day while a buck fevered newbie friend or relative was missing it twice...... sigh

On day I will figure out how to post quailty large clear pictures from an iphone again, I have lots of decent ones.

Some awfully Fine Whitetails being posted here!!

I cut my teeth as it were on Whitetails over in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Many many years in that pursuit, and did take a few decent ones.

In the interest of keeping with the thread, I'll only post one of those out of province Ladz.
Despite some rather heavy searching over the course of three years, we never did manage to even see this fellow again, let alone put an arrow or bullet through him:

https://i.imgur.com/cSofCtf.jpg

Was nice to know he was ghosting the area though, and in years subsequent we did take a couple whose racks were eerily similar...

These days I don't bother heading back east after them any more. Sort of switched over to Mulies in that pursuit.

Never did concentrate on looking for any Big Boys in BC, but from the pictures here, it is obvious some do exist!
Now days i hunt whitetails almost exclusively with my bow, and pretty much exclusively for grits.
Not to say I would not target on a Big Boy if I wandered across one, but this is the one species that I greatly prefer to eat.
So pretty much anybody that is legal gets the effort.

Last one I took over in the OK:

https://i.imgur.com/t6Rj1RF.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/fn901Bd.jpg

Missed that hunt this past fall due to the eye issues.
I WILL NOT ever miss it again!
Even if that means training myself to shoot backwards (lefty) LOL! ;-)

Cheers,
Nog

Every picture of a white tail, big small dead or alive is a good one.
I'm guilty of not taking enough pictures, I rarely take a camera in the bush, and by the time they get to the road they don't look as nice.

What you are seeing is the difference between the Dakota subspecies and the northwestern subspecies. Both can get big but you can see the traits to the Dakota subspecies in the peace

Are you aware of areas of overlap the two subspecies?

Dont doubt you will see some overlap along the Rockies but for the most part the Dakota subspecies is north east side of the Rockies in BC. In Alberta it’s a north vs south thing Dakota subspecies being northern. If my memory is right it’s about red deer the subspecies mix in Alberta

In BC I wonder if some of the northern WT populations around PG are a mix of the subspecies

This years buck in the same sled

Figured 300+ lbs live. Got 87 lbs. of well trimmed meat of him (with around 10 lbs wasted due to the heater being too close...my fault....)

This guy was a Fort St. James buck and he weight 200 lbs if an once.

Caught this buck crossing a steep scree slope in a canyon working his way towards a hot doe. Previously, I thought these scree slopes would act as a funnel since they would avoid them. Wrong.

Probably the prettiest caped buck I've killed

several years ago behind no tresspassing signs. If you think I'm wrong about Northern Region 3 by all means come up and hunt. Best to take a week's vaction and enjoy the views as well. The place is crawling with whitetails and muleys and moose. 160-170 class whitetail bucks behind every other tree. 200 inch muleys behind all the rest. Yup, it is amazing here! Too bad the secret is out! :)

Yes I realize this but some MUs in 3 don’t hold much for WT either. Some MUs are great in 3 as well

Populations are not equal among region 3

Understood and crystal clear.

FYI, the envy of all my my elite hunting contacts when it comes to WT are in Reg 3.
Lower sporadic density generally leads to cranker bucks. This kid is onto several monsters every yr and has killed some of them. 170 to 200+" deer while others hunt the same areas complaining. They are an interesting and polarizing species for sure.

A 200 plus class whitetail from southern BC?????? Really????

I know of a couple R 8 200" Whities taken and have 'heard' about some jaw droppers from R 3.
They definitelty aren't found behind every bush but some whitetail bucks do die of old age no matter how much hunting pressure exists. Those low deer densitiy areas like Ourea mentioned can be havens for old bucks.

My definition of low WT numbers does not match many who are preaching about the doe season. I also fully understand the tactics most use in BC are why they don’t see them.

Not once have I said the season effects myself or the WT hunters I know. It has actually improved success rate on bucks in some areas

I have a good feeling I even know the area in 3 your bragging of the big bucks coming out of. Many say the area lacks WT but they are actually looking in the wrong areas

I am not a MD hunter that converted to WT

Absolutely awesome pictures! Definitely have to revive this post before next season.

With R5 mule deer rut closure in November, it offers an opportunity to hunt exclusively for WT during that time. Although not as plentiful as the peace country or the southern parts of BC they are here and the numbers are growing especially in the agricultural zones.

Stone Sheep Steve;
Good morning to you sir, I hope all is well with you and yours this frigid and breezy Sunday. Must be some sort of rule about Sundays being cold and windy in February, eh?

Way back in the day, for a couple years I measured at the Oliver Sportsmen's Club for their trophy night. While I don't recall a 200" whitetail back then, there were a couple - maybe 3 actually - that grossed right around 185".

One was a nice young lady who had just taken up hunting and I want to say it was her first buck or close to that. There was a bit of a fuss over it, maybe even Big Buck magazine did a piece on her? Anyway I heard the upshot was she quit hunting as it wasn't why she'd started. Too bad that, or so I thought.

Even though I've lived here in the south for 34 years now, I've never killed a 200" whitetail and don't believe I've laid eyes on one either. If you make it over here to hang a carcass, have a coffee or what have you, I can show you a couple drop off sets in our garage which we found on our land in Saskatchewan. They're mid 150's - guessing the spread of course since they're not attached.

Back in '87 this old warrior died somewhere up on Baldy. Both ears were tattered, one front tooth was broken out along with a split lower lip and his face was all scars. He liked to brawl Steve!
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x83/BC30cal/hunting/1989.jpg

His rack was on the downhill side for sure and if memory serves the Provincial bio said he was 7½ - back when we could get "A tooth for the truth" badges.

This one died in '93 or '94, young buck coming up I'd say. It was the last weekend of season, I was slithering along in the old growth and saw a tail flag maybe 80yds in front of me. I called it to a stop and through the tangle saw what I thought was a spike - ended up it was a brow tine. Anyway I knew it was a whitetail buck so I carefully inserted a 180gr Hornady Spire into the base of its right ear with the beat up BBR '06 that I carried in my youth. This is what I found when I walked up to it - nice surprise for sure.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x83/BC30cal/hunting/1993.jpg

In 2012 I'd been playing tag with a first rack basket rack and another second rack buck that had a rack about the same size, just a tad larger. On the second last weekend of season I missed the first rack buck at maybe 75yds. It was a gimme shot and to this day I'm not clear how I hit the rest of the world instead of that little fellow, but I suppose the rest of the world IS bigger so that's where the bullet went. Funny I was so sure I'd hit him I watched him trot away instead of shooting - just waiting for him to keel over. There was snow and subsequent tracking showed the error of my misplaced surety......:(

I will note that testing showed my rifle had gone a wee bit stinko on me, not enough to miss the buck but enough to make me park it in the safe for the remainder of the season and enough that I strapped it in the barrel vice and unmade it from a .270..... but that's another story for another day perhaps Steve...

The last weekend of season then, this time with an ancient and somewhat "lucky" Ruger 77 in .308 Norma, I'd just finished my second string of calling when I spotted the tips of a rack weaving in through the regrowth Doug Firs, so I thought to myself - ah it's the second rack one this weekend. I mentally noted where he'd be in the clear between two trees and shot him in the neck as he cleared the branches.

This is what I found that time instead of the basket rack.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x83/BC30cal/Amy1456_zpsd3ebbb79.jpg

Now the really interesting thing is this guy died less than half a mile from the '93 buck and the similarities in the racks are really visible when you see them in person. As well, the '93 buck went 138lb carcass weight and the '12 buck was 124lb carcass, skinny as a rail really and in very poor condition.

I've killed a few older mulie bucks in that body condition and although it's a guess, I don't believe he'd have made the winter or not easily anyway. Teeth were about gone too, which is surprising considering he could still grow a rack, you know?

Anyway sir, thanks for letting a semi-old guy reminisce this morning. I hope you all stay well as we head into spring.

Dwayne
