Hmmm seems lots of areas with good bull to cow ratios, but poor calf to cow ratios....the cows are getting bred but something his happening to the calves.....i think Proguide66 is onto something....

Yup, something is happening after the rut.
Wolves for sure, but, if you look, so is malnutrition and starvation.

Don't forget about black bears + grizzly bears feeding on the calf moose too.

That's the biggest thing I got out of the article. They seem to be bigger players than the wolves.

would be interesting to know the level of effort/survey intensity and actual count numbers...not just percentages. If extrapolating from a small sample size would br easy to be misleading. A 50% increase based on a small sample size in each of the sample years doesn't necessarily mean numbers are healthy in that area. Hopefully the counts were indeed representative. Interesting read for sure. Thanks for posting 2chodi

Thanks for posting 2chodi, finally got to read it....interesting how a lot of the calf mortalities were in march - may...preds I'm sure are a big part of that, but maybe also ticks??
