Well guys ,just had my best day ever on the line. First reason I had my son Cole with me ,he is 13 and really getting into it. Secondly lots of critters we caught 3 lynx 3 erma and 4 wolves . It was our first attempt at a bait pile and snaring and I guess it worked .
We left Langley Saturday afternoon and were at the cabin by 4 pm ,lit the fire and decided to go check a few traps while it heated up.The roads have being plowed on some of the lower parts of the line due to logging so off we went. 3rd trap in and we got a extra large lynx , that got things pumped up so we decided to check the entire lower portion of the line. The next 5 or 6 traps had nothing a couple were missing bait so we re-baited them and tried some new lure. Next was the bait pile ,Cole said lets leave the best for last and we continued up the line. If he know what was waiting for us i'm sure we wouldn't have gone by. 2 traps after the bait pile another lynx ,this was starting to be a great night. Well the last 4 traps in this area are up a steep hill and with the new snow we were not going to make it. After a couple km hike and nothing to show for it ,we headed to the cabin.
But first we checked the bait pile, grabbing the flashlights we slowly entered the area and could see there had been a lot of activity. The 200 pounds of bait from the previous week was almost gone and there were bones everywhere. We started looking for snares, at the first spot we had 2 hanging we could only see one. The other was around the neck of our first wolf, it was a juvenile gay not the big black we were hoping for but it was a wolf. Slowly we made our way through the trees to check out the other snares. 15 feet away we had another and 6 feet from that one we had our 3rd all were juveniles , we were on cloud nine. We decided to back out and come back in the morning did not want to disturb the area in the dark. On the way back to the cabin we followed 3 sets of wolf tracks 2 very large and 1 smaller set. 9 km from the cabin we came to a y in the road, with 4 more cat boxes up the one branch of road. So we were already excited about our catch and thought dinner could wait another 20 min. First three traps nothing but on the 4th we had something. As we climbed over the bank we could see gray , great another lynx . No it was another wolf, a wolf caught in a 330 something I think is quite rare. With the lower end of the line checked we headed back to the cabin for dinner and movie along with a great sleep.
Sunday morning came early and we were off to the bait pile to see our bounty. It was almost what we could see the night before but the amount of activity was amazing. All the snow was compacted there were track every where. After a close look at all the snares we had 3 wolves but it looked like some wolfs had stayed behind after the 3 were snared. There was a dusting of snow on the snared wolfs but some tracks were fresh. We looked at the trail camera and yes there were wolfs on the bait pile right up till Saturday at 2:14 pm days after the wolfs were caught. Well it was already noon and we had to hit another area of the line. It was one of those days on the line that just seemed perfect Sunny,-2 ,3 inches of new snow and with your new trapping partner. We got on our snowmobiles and checked all our higher traps and only came out with 2 erma and a lynx but what a day it was. Well I have a bunch of pictures just need to get them on there, anyone know the best way?

Thanks for thinning out the wolves a bit! Region 3 or ?

I like lynx & wouldn't shoot one personally. They are specialists & mainly just eat snowshoe hares (which breed like rabbits ; ). However, I do understand that lynx populations are also monitored/managed by wildlife biologists & trapping is the only way to control some species.

Hi guys just did a fast trip back up to the line. Setup two more bait pile ,one of then is only a km from the first and the other is about 16 km away. I wanted to set up a new bait pile close to the other just in case they would not go back to where the others were caught. Well they did come back , the remaining 3 spent last night or early morning at the pile. They kept away from where the other wolves were caught and did not go right into the bait. Instead they chewed on the bones they scatted earlier in the week. So another couple doz snares out i'm hoping for a few more next week. We also picked up another lynx

RemingtonJim yes very odd getting any canine in a 330 , so far only 1 yoti and 1 wolf
Finngun yes fun part is checking the traps 12 hours into skinning last weekends catch
SteepNdeep the line is in 3 and there are a lot more lynx around than you think , I will attach a pic of my best weeks catch of lynx

If you guys want I will keep this thread going for the season

The wolf was caught in a lynx cubby , no disturbance to the area it was a very fast kill. Fur has prime up ,but could use some more snow and cold weather

Trapman..I have a question..How come wolf pelts aren't worth much..When they are made into a rug they are downright pricey..Is there no market for them?..Looks like you have a good line for fur and you sure have lots of wolves..Keep up the great job ..Dennis

Elknut I believe in the garment industry there is just no demand for it, it is a very course fur not as soft as most. When you mount a wolf most of the cost is in the tanning and taxidermy. I trap 4 lines, This gives me the chance to trap really hard without the chance of over trapping. he wolves have just started to show over the last 3 years, I believe there are 3 small packs in my areas (5-6 per). 3 years ago my daughter and I could go out on opening day and see 10 bucks 20-30 does and get our 2 deer. This year we went out ,saw 2 does that was all we saw in 2 days. Maybe that is why I'm trying to hammer the wolves so much this year.

I've been out on my buddies today traplines and had a great time. Sent my kids to school with cougar sandwiches. Great meat if you haven't tried it. But I would get banned from home if I brought back a wolf. When I showed the pictures of wolves to my family, they thought it was our dog. Even the closeups are identical. He wears blaze orange when in the bush because of this. Good luck with the wolves, just let any wearing blaze orange walk.

Taxidermy Man you must be joking , that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!!!!!. It is obvious you know nothing about trapping , regulations or how a snare works . A properly made snare will dispatch a anamal in seconds . What you are suggesting is illegal, cruel and in no way work

Thanks for the info...I had a feeling that tanning and taxidermy was the problem..Keep up the good work..Too many wolves ...They have become a plague and are really hard to control ..Us hunters don't get a chance to see or shoot them much..They never stick around when you do see them..Trappers are one of the effective ways to reduce them.....Dennis

We traded our fish carcasses (lake trout, salmon and bottom fish) to our local trapper for his lynx carcasses (otherwise known as BushPussy). We would then have a big spring BBQ with the bushpussy in burgers, loins and nuggets as well as moose, elk, deer and fish. It is funny to watch people who have never had lynx just gobble down the nuggets and burgers, then find out they just ate bushpussy!!!!

Cougar and Lynx are delicious!!!

I hope Trapman doesn't mind, but here is a short video I got last year showing just how weary a wolverine can be. I caught 1 in this set early in the season, and had two others (might have been the same one) poking around, but neither would commit. When I took my trapping class, one of the old school trappers who was instructing stating that he believed every mature wolverine has learned to be trap shy from setting off/getting caught in a little marten set. Not sure if there is any truth to it, but makes sense to me, and they sure are strong enough to break free from a 120.

Although many wolverine are caught in crate cubbies from experience I find a spacious natural debris double end cubby to be more effective resulting in less refusals. If an animal can see a way out the other end they are much less hesitant to enter or to tear into the cubby from the side. Sorry no pictures.

Ok slowly getting this thread up to date. So Christmas is coming and we are off to the Caribbean for 12 days, great gives the traps and snares tome to soak. Coming home I discover we have had over 3 feet of snow just after we left on the line, this means the traps will be buried and the snares will have been noneffective well I was away. The day after i'm back, my son and I head up for a couple days of digging out traps and rehanging all the snares what a pain. Like I thought every trap and snare was buried , all empty but for one snare. We had a yote come in to a bail pile and picked him up on one of the very outside snares

Just curious, what would be the budget figure to get started? Assuming that you've acquired a trapline (i know trapline costs can vary). Is a snowmobile a necessity?

trapman
01-18-2018, 09:54 PM
I would say ATV and snowmobile are both necessary.
Atv-$5500(good used)
Snow mobile-$5500(good used) should have 2
Winter gear-$1200(snow shoes, parka, pants, boots and so on)
license, permits,insurance- $375
traps, lures, supplies -$450
Fuel per year-$3800(truck, atv, snowmobile ,chainsaw)
Cabin if needed-$ 20,000
But the time is the big one ,I spend 400 hours a year on my line. cutting trail and installing boxes and getting bait areas ready all summer long. Than 2 to 3 days on the line each week of the season, with 6-10 hours a week skinning and drying fur

Thanks for this Info Trapman. On the other side of the coin what kind of income can you expect assuming an average year. I know this is not a money making venture but how long if ever can you break even?

Drillbit is right ,from the start I have spent somewhere around 60,000. And maybe brought in 35,000 over 14 years of trapping
But the look on my sons face when he catches his first wolf in his own snare or lynx in his own cubby is priceless and what else is there to do between nov and feb

Well after a hellish week last week digging everything out because of all the new snow I was hopping for a better trip up to the line. Left the house at 530 and was on the line by 8 , couple inches of new snow and the sun was out going to be a good day. There were cat tracks everywhere and at the second box I had a great tom. At the first bait pile only birds and yoties , no sign of wolves . So another 10 snares and off to the next bait pile. Half way there, i caught another nice tom lynx next to a little creek number 11 for the year. Get to the station and again no sign off wolves, must be on another area of their territory so sealed off a couple more areas and carried on. The rest of the day was pretty uneventful ,but out a few more bobcat boxes. I an trying a new style of box, they are a double ended and I hung the bait in the middle. the box is 6 inched of the snow, we will see how it works. Heading up on Tuesday with curly top hopefully show him a good day on the line

Well I had a great trip up to the trapline with curly top, great guy. We shared a lot of laughing and stories which is what the great outdoors is all about. The day started out well let’s say not on the best foot, My new snowmobile would not start so we had to double Luckily we only had 6 inches of new snow. Not much for tracks due to the snow the night before but still we are excited once we left the track. After five or six traps and the first bay pile, we had no fur but curly top never did stop smiling. We made it to the second bait station no Wolf sign anywhere but in the back corner we found a coyote hung up in the tree. We followed up the valley another few kilometres to the end of our traps and found nothing else. We ended up talking to a couple timber cruisers from Merritt looking to mark out another clear-cut. I have met these guys before and seem to really know the area and what goes on in it. I asked them if they had seen any wolf sign anywhere they replied with nothing in the area the last two weeks but they had seen some sign up on the Boston bar side of the mountains. Hopefully these are the remaining two of the pack that we are after and they’ll soon come back to my side of the line. They did tell me I have seen a much larger moose presence in the area since we have trapped the six wolves . Not sure if they’ve moved in because the wolves have moved out or they just move around a lot more when the wolves are not there to bother them. Will back to the truck and loaded up everything then we headed to the north side of the trap line. I’m one of the first boxes were checked we had a bobcat. At the bait station no wolf sign and very few coyotes Tracks well another few miles up the road I unloaded the snowmobile and headed up to the high country alone. Due to the amount of snow we wouldn’t be able to both double on the same sled . Last trap of the day I pull the links out which made it a great day. Curly top got to see three of the furbearing animals on the trap would be nice to see a couple others but that’s how trapping is

Well another ten days or so and another trip up to the line. Had a great day with my son or should I say good luck charm. First box we had a lynx , second box we had a Erma thinking this is going t to be a great day. On the first half we had 2 lynx,3 Erma and 4 squirrels. Not to bad hoping the north side will be as productive. A 45 min drive 2 pieces of pizza and we were on the north side of the line. Again first box was a bobcat. Next was a Erma than another lynx and 2 more squirrels. Not a bad day on the line with my little buddy. Well I guess its time to show last weeks catch on the line. Took a good friend of mine up for the day and what a great day we had the sun was shinning and the traps had some critters in them. you know the season is over when the snow finally has a bottom to it , sun is shinning and there are cat tracks everywhere. Well we did ok 4 lynx, 1 bobcat and a few smaller things. So we pulled all the traps , set some more snares and re baited the piles
