Anyone heard off this? I shot this Wigeon last saturday and it looked different but I didn't realize what the difference was until I posted it on twitter and got a few comments.
One guy said it was a Storm Wigeon, only 1/1000 have this all whitish head. It was a beauty with a nice sprig, I thought it was nice enough to get mounted but decided not too.
If I had known it was rare I would have...
Anyone ever heard or seen this before?

Unless I am missing something in that picture, that is a mature drake widgeon. Those are typical colours, and a beautiful specimen. I have shot lots of those late season on the south Island.

Search Storm Wigeon.
From what I read, the off white on the underside the head is what makes it different.
Ive shot lots of wigeon too but mostly focus on mallards. Now I’ll look at all wigeon I see to see if this is as common as you say.

Ya, it does have an off white underside and some freckles still but definitely a lot brighter than Widgeon we usually encounter.
I had never heard the term Storm Widgeon before, something to watch out for now.
