View Full Version : First time connecting with a called deer!

I ve hunted for a few years and had deer interested in my bleats, grunts and rattles, but I could never get one to commit... until today. Hiked 10 min off the road into a new area; I had driven by it plenty of times but today it was too juicy to pass up. There was no rub, few tracks, and not much going on but I was there so why not sit a while. I gave a couple real seductive doe calls through my trusty duck call and sat for 10 minutes. I gave one more slightly less desperate bleat, and proceeded to slowly pick my way over to a better look out. I have also learned that when calling like that it can be a good idea to move a few yards off of where the call was made. Sure enough as I was creeping over to the shooting spot a little 2 point strolled right into view on his way to where the calls came from. Not being one to waste an opportunity I shouldered the old 99 and and let him have it.
Feeling pretty good about my first reg 2 limit, and having the first one come to my duck call/doe call.

.300 Savage loaded with 150g Nosler ballistic tips. I haven't even taken my 30-06 out of the locker this season which used to be my go to. The 99 is such a great gun and thanks to dabber for sending me this one after my original was stolen. I did a full resto on it; reblued the barrel and tuned up the woodwork with some linseed oil. It has been the good luck charm this year for sure.

I ve been using a duck call to produce doe estrus blats for a few years now. I bought a one of those can calls and it got wrecked and it wasn't that good anyway. I upgraded to a blown call but prefer the wooden duck call. It has a nice tone and sounds like a nice mature doe... I make her sound drunk and lusty.
I just like the fact that I only need one call to do mallards and does

Sweet old rifle!
First couple of deer I ever took (over 45 years ago now) were with my Ma's 99 in 250-3000.
Brought back some fine memories having a boo at your picture there!
Congrats on the limit too! Well Done! http://bigshotsbc.ca/images/smilies/Pozitive.gif

Lol, well I must say I learned my lusty ways from Gouthro’s moose madness but there is another story that helped get “the idea” of it.
A young boy boy asked his grandma about sex and how a woman could like it. She asked if he had ever had an itch in his ear and if he scratched it. “Well of course I have” the boy replied. The elder then inquired “what felt better; your finger or your ear?”
When I go a calling I really try to fit the bill, but without the tuck.
and yes the old 300 savage is a choice weapon. That one turned 70 this year; 3 shots and 3 deer this season with it.

right on, nice rifle and love the calling method, deer calling in BC is massively under used and once you find a call system that works, which it seems you have, its meat in the freezer.
