Had an odd problem with my truck the other day. The engine surged in gear so I put it into neutral and the surging stopped. This happened a couple of times on the same day and since then nothing. My neighbor has a code reader and it showed nothing. I spoke with a mechanic and he said it could be something that could show up and never happen again. I found one site on the internet which was the same as my experience except it was a diesel engine.

Could be a sign the fuel pump is on the way out.

Sounds like the tranny maybe? What gear were you in when it happened. I know the 4l60 e in the 1500s can loose the 3-4 gears in older trucks. Mine went and it would rev up when slipping.

I was in drive. I guess unexpected acceleration might be better than surge.

My old 98 chev would do that once in a while, I believe it was the alternator not charging properly. so the engine would rev up trying to get more juice.

Did it make a noise like "chugga-chugga-chugga-bbrrrrrr-chugga-chugga-brrrrrr-chugga-chugga" ?
My wife said she has the same problem in her Jeep

It could also be the lockup clutch in the torque converter sticking. Did it happen when you came to a stop after going 60+? If so, could be a sticky lockup, or a TC on the way out. I've seen dodge diesels with the TC going, they start stalling, or bogging when you rev them up standing on the brakes in gear.
