Since the bush is closed in region 4 I can only hang around home and check off a few more items from the chore list. It keeps things interesting when you have bears like this hanging around.

I would be interested in your thoughts about IDing this bear as female or male.

Looks like a big male boar to me. No expert but I've shot a couple.

Female or I mature young boar..

Nose long and tapered. .young or female..
Ears big and on top. .young bear..
Rear end bigger than front end..female character trait..
Front legs taper..and have a very noticeable wrist...young or female..
I don't think this is A young bear per say..
No noticeable characteristics of a boar. ..my vote is female...
Cheers

Mature sows can be deceiving, especially at first glance, in that they show some mature boar characteristics. Low belly and head appearing small in comparison to the body.

Profile would be a dead giveaway, as a sow has little to no neck.

That's good to know. I plan on heading out in a couple weeks for a bear up island. Ill make sure I look for those characteristics.

It's definitely a male.
Reasons
-huge neck & a big rounder head as opposed to a smaller narrower head
-massive in size
-a dead giveaway-check the huge muscular forearms

Hmm lol even after 30 plus years i get it wrong..but fewer as the years go by..
The wrists and front legs on this picture make me pretty certain.pronounced taper..bear looks decent size with some weight..but back end is truly characteristic of a female..larger than front end..cub producing size..
The nose on a boar would be shorter and bigger round..even squared off...
The head does not have a muscle crease nor is it as wide as i would expect on a big male...
All photos can be made to high lite certain atributes" at the expense of others causing doubt..
But that is just what, and why I think about this bear...

Hmmm big boars do not have tapered front legs, this photo really high lites that.
Then there is the pronounced wrists..not indict I've of males at all and certainly not big boars..the legs would be stove pipes ending at the outside of the paws..not slender wrists
Big boars are squared off bodies..or bigger front ends..this one's rear cub producing characteristics are apparant."
Girls can be big too..ask Oprah. ..

Female left vs. male right-again compare checking size, head , neck & the front legs.

I think bears have three genders, male, female, and shooter. I think that's a shooter.

First pic from original post I'm going to go with female.
The feet look a little dainty to me. Facial features do not scream rough tough boar either.

My first thought was a sow because of the dainty ankles

180 gets it, shooter, likely male or big old dry sow. But either way, nice looking Bruin

I would say Sow for the brown one. Same deal the ankles say female to me. The head looks female to me as well, but that is not the most accurate way to judge a bear. IMO.

I cant say for sure. But what I can say id if it's a lone bear, it's a shooter. You'll only know for sure once it's on the ground and you peak under it's skirt.

Female - small narrow head, legs lack stove pipe look.

On the first brown bear..heavy set..meat head..the photo is the worst to judge neck....no cubs? Pepperoni. ...
The last single bear..the legs are not the correct view..but when looking at the nose..shorter larger round..there is a wide distance between the ears..a 8 inch plate would easily fit be ween the ears on the forehead.

Chilcotin Hillbilly knows bears..maybe he has additional ideas..judging criteria tips and tricks..?

Were you able to tell whether it was irrational or overly-emotional?

Could be a boar going through nicotine withdrawal.

my gut says female for the first bear, but damn thats a big girl, which is why you would second guess that call...last bear really looks like a boar, the short snout with not very drawn out by the face

I've read that the cinnamon phase in black bears is a recessive female gene. I'm not sure but that first bear looks brown. I'd go with female. Second bear looks like a male, with the pumpkin head and all.

I heard that the bear is now dead and that it was a female. I don't do all the social media stuff but it is
supposed to be on there.

Sorry to report that the CO killed this bear this week. Claims it was getting too comfortable in town and people we not picking their fruit in time. Aside from the idiots not picking their fruit which out wildsmart lady and bylaw officer should be policing we need to remember that we live in the bears home not the other way around.

Abit shocked the CO did not try to relocate the bear first but rather took the easy and cheaper route.

Not looking to start a fight here, but we're talking about a black bear, not a unicorn. Aside from the fact that relocation is gonna put the sow in the middle of another bears territory and in direct competition for a dwindling food source, it has been conditioned to easy food near humans. And forget about the whole, "We're living in their territory" crap; man belongs on the earth just as much as any other mammal.

The CO should be given a Hi-5 for a job well done.

I agree with river otter 100%

My uncles largest bear we came around a bend on our way home it had the whole road blocked and the belly was dragging.
Turns out it was the whistler IGA bear and I believe he was put where we found him for some hunter to kill as it was that bears 12th relocation and was the bear known for robbing the by the slice pizza.

Bears in my neighbourhood get two chances..
1. I haze them
2.They better hope I miss.
