just wondering what people use to hold there gun in place when hiking, just a sling would swing around , but I need it to be accessible quickly, I'm sure there are many ideas out there and a few products to buy.

Kifaru makes a handy system, it took some adjusting and getting use to, but now I hardly notice the rifle there. One thing I don't like about it tho, when hiking uphill and someone is in front of me, I have to be aware of where my barrel is pointing. It's actually a pretty easy diy setup.

Hooked over the corner of your external pack frame works fine, if you want your rifle at the ready. Other than that maybe an eberlestock internal scabbard type setup?

Another vote for the gun bearer. My favourite new piece of gear this year. Simply superb.

I've done that but find that my rifle bangs and rattles agains the frame. Any way around that?

Look up the Safari Sling. Truly a perfect product. Bought ours at Cabelas for approx $30? Your rifle is in front of you, simply lift and aim.

Another vote for the gun bearer. Easy to set up but does take a bit of getting used to. Wouldn't be without one now.

I used a gun bearer on a hunt last year for the first time. It was handy in that the rifle was always in arms reach, and comfortable, but my rifle took a real beating with the scope chafing against the shoulder strap and the butt against every little twig.

I would imagine the gun bearer needs to be ordered directly through Kifaru, do any stores carry?

I'm in the same dilemma about attaching my rifle to the pack or do I just carry it like normal ?
Im pretty handy with ropes/knots so I was thinking I may just improvise as I go along.

If some could post a few pictures of their setups that would b great
thanks in advance

I ordered my gun bearer straight through Kifaru, as mentioned it takes some getting use to but once you do it's awesome!

I built my own version of the Kifaru. It's really comfortable and works great but I'm interested in the mystery ranch. it looks like it keeps the gun a little more out of your way

Just watched a youtube video on the Mystery Ranch one. It seems the rig really pulls on the shoulder strap across the chest.

I hang mine on the upright of my frame pack.

Wore a pretty nice flat spot on my vintage 1953 Husqvarna fore-end though.

Switched to a plastic stock 280. No wear now.

You only have to jump a bear once with a rifle on your pack and you won't do that again. In a charge situation you will not get your gun off. When I guide I remove my sling just to make sure that the rifle in my hand at all times.

I've seen some videos of Randy Newberg on YouTube using one of these:

https://store.kifaru.net/gun-bearers-p30.aspx

It seems like a great option for when you need the rifle quick. One end strapped to the hip belt of the pack, the other end holding the rifle against the shoulder strap of the pack, under your arm.

All you need to do is pull the top strap and pull the rifle up to your shoulder. Seems like it would be a great way to carry a rifle while also allowing you to use your hiking poles in steep terrain.

I had a surprise face to face with a griz in a creek bottom last year while packing out from a solo goat hunt. I never got my rifle off my shoulder before the bear woofed at me and ran, luckily away from me. If it had charged, I wold have been at its mercy.

That said, I still will hike with my rifle slung over my shoulder.

I bought a pack scabbard with webbing on it. Attached by threading it to the compression straps on the side of my pack. Usually I can reach around and pull it out, but it depends on how loaded the pack is.

often, I'll just put the sling over and under a shoulder and it rides up against the back of shoulder strap to the side of my pack. Need to do up the chest strap to keep steady in place. But that way I find it's quick to shoulder it when necessary.

This, plus I found I was developing hot spots under my belt from the additional weight on my right side. That said, I prefer it to the Safari Sling.

I wish I could say I carry my rifle in my hands at all times, but that sucks on steep terrain.

In your hand is best, I have a couple encounters that would of ended different if I had it slung on my shoulder.

Fair enough, and it is when I think I may need it. But that is mostly when I'm putting a stalk on an animal, or approaching meat we have hanging. After I had my run in last year, my 7mm-08 was in my hands until I was confident the bear was long gone. ( And yes, many will say that caliber is useless for a griz charge but I choose my caliber for the game I hunt, not for defense, but that's another debate)

I just isn't practical for me in most situations to carry in my hands in the unlikely event that I may have a need to use it for defense. I have a healthy respect for dangerous game and try to be as safe as I can, but I try to keep the risk of what I do in perspective.

All that said, I still like the external frame pack and the ability to sling a rifle. Still provides good access

That's less then I thought it would be. With the current exchange situation, I am always hesitant to buy from the US.

that velcro loop on the shoulder strap, does it wrap around you gun barrel or your rifle stock? I think i tried mine around my rifle barrel and it wanted roll like you mentioned, if you shorted up the bottom craddle part that attaches to your waist belt so that the rifle is higher up you'll be able to wrap around you gun stock. Also play around with the location of that velcro loop on your shoulder strap, ( up and down)

FYI I ordered a Gun Bearer a few weeks ago and when it arrived Customs wanted $15. I told them to send it back. You may get lucky and not get dinged, but $15 for a $50 item is ridiculous.

US made goods means they were only charging you sales tax. The rest was the Canadian customs 'handling fee' - usually a $10 flat rate when items are shipped USPS. That's too bad though. I have yet to pay a penny to customs for any of my Kifaru orders. Knock on wood.

Agreed🙌... Removed commander stock pouch and replaced with gun bearer. Much, much better. There was mention of scope in armpit, I'm a shorter framed guy and don't have that problem. Had to play with it to get it right. Couple pack trips is all it took. Gun bearer works great for me!!!

Looks like it would fall off your shoulder after a while and also get caught up in your bino harness.

I would look at the SG weapon sling

It's compatible with many packs, and ajustable so that the rifle stays on your shoulder and you have two hands free.
