Recreational Fishery opens Saturday July 1 for 2 per rod per day.

And of course now that we've realized one over the magic number, Area D Gillnet launches Tuesday... http://www.sportfishingbc.com/forum/styles/default/xenforo/clear.png:-x

How many minutes before the in-river nets block it completely off again?? http://www.sportfishingbc.com/forum/styles/default/xenforo/clear.png

Department of Fishless Oceans at 'er again... http://www.sportfishingbc.com/forum/styles/default/xenforo/clear.png:evil:

Sadly...

What are in river nets and who puts them there?

What are in river nets and who puts them there? The NDP puts them in the river and collects money from unsuspecting taxpayers such as yourself?

Sadly with what the NDP are promising the natives they might as well be setting the nets themselves.

I doubt the NDP has anything to do with nets in Port Alberni. Easy to point fingers in that direction, however, nets/netting are under Federal authority and Fisheries and Oceans, Canada.

Bob Cole, member of the Area 23 Harvest Committee said there will also be a limited gillnet fishery in Alberni Inlet for six hours Tuesday from Polly’s Point to Pocahontas Point.
“Great news for all,” Cole said.

Great news for everyone but the sockeye

I now Identify as a Status Indian and am pondering Redistribution of some salmon to my freezer, but to be culturally sensitive, I need the traditional equipment.

Several years in a row we had around 3000 pieces of summer run fish but most fall/early winter fishermen capitalized on those. I think June, July and maybe August were the identified months that summer run fish were entering the river system.

Summer runs: Starts in June. Peaks in July. Tapers off in the heat of the beginning August. As in now...

And yes. they are VERY MUCH impacted by Sockeye openings.
The very reason the local hatchery reduced the number of summers they produced in favor of winters.

You don't need any equipment. Head over towards Port and you will be able to buy as many "ceremonial" sockeye as you want out of natives trunks. $10 a fish. If they don't sell them, they get tossed in the ditch and the whole scenario starts again the next day with fresh salmon.

The government has some what legitimized the native fishery in the commercial aspect. The road side sales could be over flow from that fishery but I don't know if that is considered a legal means to sell to the public. What I do know is the very people that complain about road side sales seem to be of the same ilk as the people that buy road side fish. Simple economics of supply and demand, take away demand and no need to supply.

Just back from bamfield, the privileged ones are netting in the river

Interesting that this sockeye run was not here a hundred years ago,
at least not in the numbers we see today.

And... With 220K up the ditch, it is time to unleash Jimmy's seiners for a four day opening (with extensions)!

Of course even with the near complete lack of four year olds, and not at the escapement target for the recognizably reduced run, DFO decided to "upgrade" by 50,000 pieces to make this so.

Damn Sad Times to be a sockeye here...

The BC Conservative Party should've thanked John Cummins rather than tossed him out.
