Hey everyone....was wondering how any people hunt with their dogs...I know fowl hunters and cougar hunter do....but what about solo back pack trip after deer or other game?

you can, so long as it is leashed. dogs can attract wolf attention too. they likely perceive fido as competition and will trail you to try and separate you and dispatch your dog. many tales of this around.

i have taken my pooch only on scouting hikes, when he can legally be off-leash but i dont risk it during hunting outings, even though he can sit still, be quiet and is very well trained overall.

I bring my companion on almost every trip , he stays leashed and I haven't had any issues . Always better than leaving the dog at home!

I take my dog on every trip. Leash her when we are hunting and hook the leash to my belt. Started her as a pup and she is rock solid now. Have had deer walk in on us and she doesn't make a peep.

I'd feel guilty for not bringing my huntin buddy. Day hunts, to 2 week fly in sheep hunts. When her pack comes out, she knows it's go time.

I have an old male pitbull...he was great but now dosnt have the indurance anymore....but I have a boxer saint burnard pitbull cross....she is amazing...took her out once and she was awesome....be great for camp dog and no real wolf threat where I am....wanted to do some back pack solo trips...but wanted to bring her along for some company...have done lots on my own and tired of talking to myself lol

A buddy insisted on bringing his dog to moose camp one year. Good watchdog, but when he wounded a moose and we were all recruited to track it, he left the dog in camp because the dog was not trained to do it and was useless.

Shook my head. Why have a dog if it can't do the basics?

I know, I know, don't wound the moose. But if a dog can't even find a blood trail that a human can see what good is he?

Well this is just it...my dog uses her nose constant even sniffing down deer tracks and following them step by step...I didn't even have to tell her anything....i was beyond impressed with her....funny part....when I raise my rifle she stands and looks at me...when I click my safety off she slowly hides behind me....its like she read the script lol

I know the regs say that a dog that is hunting deer has to be leashed but what if the dog isn't hunting,is on heel, and just a long with you as company? My hope is that I can get my 6 month old WPG to that level of control even though it could take a couple of years of consistent training to get her to that point.

I've brought my pitbull hunting a few times before he blew out his knee. He's a short haired dog, so he's not stoked on cold weather, or sitting and waiting and watching.
However, he sure smells deer and will point to them, which is ridiculous since he can't sniff out a milkbone on the carpet without help.

I can't count the hours my dog Buckley has been in the bush with me hunting. Awesome companion.
Some of my best hunting memories have been of days spent hunting with him.

I keep my dog in camp while we are hunting and as long as he is there, we have no bear problems. It's a camp that is used during the summer and the bears are used to it. If we have trouble finding an animal (gets dark) we've used him and it's a quick recovery. It's also nice to have him when we have to pack out in the dark. He always knows the way and growls when something is near.

OK so if the dog is just company while your hunting would that not make the dog hunting as well....i am green to this so very curious? Just wondering if my dog needs to be on leash....she stays right at my side never more then 6 feet

my dogs go with me everywhere...no i dont put a leash on my mutts....if i cant trust them enough to let them free,then they can't come
my dogs are all Border collie X, ive also had heeler X....the best hunting partner you'll ever have..has four legs

Read the hunting synopsis, it states that if you're hunting big game the dog has to be on a leash, it's not a suggestion! I don't think if you ran into a CO out in the field hunting big game with your dog of leash that he would turn a blind eye.

Not how I read it, it says, dogs must be on a leash when used to hunt deer elk etc. if they are just along with you doesn't mean they are being used to hunt.

I CAN and DID read the Regs. Only if the dog is HUNTING does it need to be on a leash. COMPANION would I think be another matter. Nice to have when solo hunting in grizz territory....

More often than not have my Heeler with while hunting. Never on a leash. Great company, but not much of a hunter. Use to take my German Shepherds too. Same deal.

I'm 70% deaf. Without Sammy or Scout by my side I would be dead twice over by aggressive bears. I am caring for my inlaws Rhodesian Ridgeback while they are on holidays and what an amazing dog. I can see why they are Africa's top hunting dog. Can't wait to get my hands on a pup.

I know what some are saying. My dogs off the leash but you're not using it to hunt just a companion. But how can you expect a CO to just take your word for it? Too many ding dongs in is world. Just follow then rules like everyone else. No problem. Can't expect the CO to know what's happening when he's not looking.
