Well I did basically 0 ice fishing this year. Basically 0... but very little.

Took a friend out for his first time back in January. it was -35 and windy as all balls. His heated jacket and foot warmers only lasted 2 hours. In turn, he only lasted 2 hours. No fish, no biggie. can't expect someone from Abbotsford who has never really been in the outdoors to survive that long.

Here's Kah-Leeb hating life. Even with a decent cigar

I took ol B-Rad out in February. It was definitely warmer out. Not a single hit. :-(

Life is hard when you're trying new lakes because you don't want to take them out to places like "Dugan" or "Dewar"

A customer of mine out in Alberta convinced me to head out to Slave Lake back in March. He laughed when I opened my west coast gear. Until I started jacking the pike with a Gibbs Koho #55

May Long I had planned on going out to do some fishing and hunting. But got called out to Kamloops to play in a ball tournament. So as soon as I got back, met up with father and headed out. We found out one of the lakes we use to fish, that had gone to catch and release only, had gone back to regional regulations. So we headed out for the first time in quite a few years. On the way out we came across a bear.

Not sure if the video link works. Not overly familiar with embedding videos.

Anyways, I made my way in to 30 yards on the bear. He was perfectly broadside. I was about to draw back. He was big in the body, but his head was small. I was looking for freezer filler, but it was early in the morning. If I stabbed him, he would have been sitting in the sun all day, or we'd have to head home. I wanted neither of these. So I let him walk.

The first catch of the day was father's. He hooked into an old empty molson canadian can.

We got in to the lake. First hour or so we had one hit. It's been awhile since we've fished the lake. So we had to get it dialed back in. We were throwing everything in our fly boxes at them. I had one fly I had ripped off of instagram. Except used different ingredients and colours. My dad tied it on and in no time a fish turned and burned with it.

Dad had another fish hammer the fly in roughly the same spot. We finally had them dialed in. The fly I had stole from instagram has now been dubbed "The Wizard Of Oz"

It was a sunny day out. We'd get a bite and think "just a scrappy little guy" when they first rose. They didn't look big from 90 feet in the sun. But they would fight like sumbitches.
The fishing had slowed down for a bit. I released two smaller guys. Dad was telling me about how he's never done well on an egg sucking leech pattern. Well, as kids do... To rebel, I tied one on.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/18010304_10158608012295387_7766582811595751526_n.j pg?oh=103be477e71b7e97831159c13813ee76&oe=59A66DB5

Right away I laced into a fish. Dad was working the boat while I was playing my fish. He wasn't paying attention to his rod. He got hung up on the bottom... With all things, The Wizard Of Oz was tied to the end of his rod. I told him not to worry about the fish and just try to save the fly. I was ready to go swimming for it if it so came to be. Got my fish and saved the fly at the same time.

I got my two fish and we decided to roll out.

The 4 we killed, plus the can my dad caught. One was 18 inches, two were 19 and one 20 inches.

Nice fish....I find with the bear that pretty much all the meat is on the quarters and backstraps, so if ya cut em out, put em in your game bags and throw em in a creek for 3-5 hours after skinning the quarters quick your good to go, as you'll get the bone temps down low enough..then you woulda had a bear and could stay in the bush lol..

Walleye is the best eating fish IMO, better then all Halibut, Salmon etc... Pike is usually pretty good but just boney

Took my buddy Tranquilizer out fishing to "Reservoir Lake". My dad whipped up a little chrome chronimid that morning. I thought "what the hell is this thing?" As me and Tranquilizer got on the lake, I told him that'd he'd probably out fish me that day. And that he did. He got his first fish ever on a flyrod. The little guy put the 6 weight to work. He came in at 18". Tranquilizer also got the his second fish ever on a flyrod, being his biggest trout ever at 21". He also learned right away, not to try and grab the handle on a spinning reel.

I also took my dad's neighbour out to try and get him his first bear. Only came across a pair of slippers. Bear hunting was tough this year for me. Timing was off. Went from snow, snow, snow to hot weather and grass everywhere. Mother nature just skipped the sweet spot. Couple weeks, the bears should be wandering the roads again looking for love.

First time I've had walleye. Amazing. Last time I'll ever kill a pike though. Did not like it at all...

Walleye is one of my favourite fish to eat, I'll take a walleye of trout any day of the week

definitely give the pike another chance, those pike in your pics are a bit small for my preferences too, trickier to fillet with the Y bone....and pike are very slimy, I have OCD about not letting the slime touch the meat and soak in cold salt water after....it's great eating!!

funny buddy was laughing about that spoon, looks like a great choice to me....was on slave for a week in Feb, slow fishing (for slave) but still had a great time....sweet post, cool to see some "eastern" fish on here

Few weeks back we went on a buddy's bachelor party.

This may be a clue to where we were... it's a fork horn... get it!? Fork horn... punishing

Anyways, the groom to be's only thing he requested is we catch some bass. My other buddy was dead set on catching a walleye on a flyrod.

So myself, B-Rad and Jes-Seh-Far hit up the Columbia River for some fly action. It was slow, then I told B-rad to fish the slack water up around the corner. A little while later all I heard was "IT'S A WALLEYE!"
I grabbed my camera and head up river. As I got to B-Rad, he was pulling this out of the river.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/20024111_10159103984010387_5681864535977669153_o.j pg?oh=4781de1644a6f88b8f91cf0cb077721b&oe=59FA395F

I told him to look again. Definitely not a walleye LOL. He ended up dropping it back in the water. Next thing you know a boat pulls up. The COs pull up to me "did your buddy just release a walleye?"
I told them the story about how B-Rad was excited about catching a walleye on a fly rod and it was only a err... hmmm... pike minnow. Showed them this picture and we all had a chuckle.

Jes-Seh-Far ended up breaking his rod so we headed back to town to get him rigged up again. We hit up another spot that was kind of hidden for an afternoon fish. I was tired so I was half ass napping while the other two fished. I was just about asleep and heard "GOT A WALLEYE!"

I ignored it to not be duped again. More hollering "FOR REAL THIS TIME!" Allright, I got up and wandered up to B-Rad. Sure enough. He got his walleye on a fly rod.

Well... I may have gone scouting... for my dad. He got a draw for MOUNTAIN GOAT!!

I had booked the last week of September to head up Hudson Hope with a buddy and go moose hunting. When my dad told me he got a goat draw, well my moose hunting plans changed to goat scouting. https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21618039_10159397743870387_4177937684358649741_n.j pg?oh=73dab72aa777d24367aa0357cd3f0728&oe=5A3CCF43

Like a dummy, I started getting my gear together way too close to my launch date. Discovered I'm missing my sleep pad, couple dry bags, my stove, sil-tarp and other various things. My shit is usually all together... but I haven't really used any of it since last September when I gave up the ol' dakota... still haven't been able to track any of it down.
Anyways I pack up and make do with what I got. Went from this

So the Friday night I stopped in Smithers for the night. Peeled into Canadian Tire to grab a couple things. They had these game cams on for $75
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/22228623_10159497805915387_5152787054552548801_n.j pg?oh=11152d3e8d8de3d782627fdbfd4c7dde&oe=5A85FC7B

Grabbed the two they had plus $100 worth of SD cards and Batteries. I figure may as well toss some up in goat country. And if they grow legs and frig off, only being out a couple hundred bucks, I can live with that.

Was up early the next day and finished the cruise to Terrace. Then made my way to our area. To no surprise at all... shit was foggy as Snoop Dog in late April.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21687468_10159451468125387_2849662471992163513_n.j pg?oh=bf0f0db1ca51bafd0a17ef39c290cafb&oe=5A819D0F

So I figured it'd be a good day to cut trail. 2013 was the last time I was in this spot. It's changed quite a bit. Just to get to the base of the mountain was different. The vegetation was over 6 feet deep. Took me a little bit to find my old trail. Even going up the mountain, a lot of new trees have fallen over and pushed down the hill.

https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21764999_10159455434845387_5420499228864336449_n.j pg?oh=76834512a13926b95bc507a2637fae26&oe=5A7BD28B

I spent half the day glassing the one mountain top. There wasn't a soul up there. It started to play tricks with my mind. Thoughts like "do goats not live here anymore?" and "can I not spot goats anymore?" kept rolling through my head. I would always see multiple goats at any given time up here. But I wasn't seeing squat. So I packed up and moved to "Dink Mountain" for some glassing.

I was going to do some trail clearing, but there was another vehicle parked. I wasn't sure if they were hunters or fisher people.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21766435_10159455435030387_5926389664552016745_n.j pg?oh=a2fe63f570bc1703ad185243fe1685c2&oe=5A3BCC2A

In case they were hunters, I sat at the bottom of the mountain and set up for a glassing session. But before I even got to looking, I could see something off white up the mountain side. Fairly low to boot.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/22007333_10159455435735387_948183650602834177_n.jp g?oh=d7283c3479b399ff792cc59596556db2&oe=5A87251E

Well it confirmed I can still spot goats. This one I couldn't get a good read. But considering where it was and looking at the body, I'm putting this goat under young billy.

The next morning I still wasn't feeling well at all. I slept in, even after going to bed cold and wet. But it was pretty clear out again. So it was back onto glassing detail.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/22219939_10159511201225387_8170987384652697997_o.j pg?oh=4f63e9b4b964dba0f839698c33556097&oe=5A875C5B

I couldn't not take a look. Even though the trail wasn't even really started up there. I had to look. Finally spotted a goat up top.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/22007989_10159460186585387_3996695174581393205_n.j pg?oh=751f084a694b7968d72de7ef8345894c&oe=5A7A22F4

Up high, alone and a horse face... I couldn't get a good view of his head gear, but my hopes is he's a slug and moves down low soon. But the inspiring part is that I know there's more rocks and bushes the goats can hide behind than what I originally thought.

But still not feeling well and a clear day, I did some more glassing at "Dink Mountain"

There was some more nannies and kids hanging around down low... my theory is waiting for the rut.

After doing some glassing at "Dink Mountain". I was interested in a couple other spots. I know there was the "Diesel Tanks" spot where I really wanted to set up a trail cam. There's a granite face that's "easy" for goats to cross. This is where I parked 3 years ago... but I kept driving by the spot and couldn't find it.

2014 pictures

But as I was leaving in basically the dark... I spotted the pull out. So when me and pops go up, I'm running up dink mountain and retrieving one of my trail cams and taking up behind the "Diesel Tanks"

I thought Ricardo would have had some trails cut last year, or was it the year before? I also keep looking on google earth. There's the one road that goes up the east river and into an old cut block. It get's pretty close to the alpine on the east side of the zone... but knowing the area it's probably grown in.

I started trail up into Dink Mountain. Was not feeling well one bit. I was chumming the trail while I was re-cutting it. It seemed like forever cutting through the trail. I hadn't been that sick since February of 2010. I finally broke into the base of the mountain around 4 in the afternoon. I had a little sit down and took a break. I set up my trail cams in alright spots... I think.

There has been lots of movement where I set up my trail cameras. One was at the base of a granite face. The other was set up on a rock with a whole shit load of shit by it. Fingers crossed.

For the trail cameras, I got 32GB SD cards. But I got the micro SD cards with the adapter. So when I get up there again, I can throw in the SD card into my phone and take pictures. Retrieval of them is my number one priority when I get back up there. Then I want to run one up behind the "Diesel Tanks" now that I know where the pull out is again LOL.

This young billy is the one I believe from post #25. He came and had a peek after I made my little video.

Our original plan was to head up on the 14th, but I ended up working and putting in a new alternator in my vehicle on the 15th. So Monday morning, me and father left the puddle at 6:30am. Had to stop for timmies and drop some tires off at the fifty to get swapped. We hit rain in Quesnel, some snow east of Burns Lake and more rain right until Terrace. We made a quick stop at Country Wide Sports in Houston for a few things we forgot and Subway in Smithers. We made it to our spot in Terrace by 4:30.

Haven't heard of anyone else with the draw. Dink Mountain trail was pretty over grown. So no one has marched in there.

We got to our camping spot and did some glassing behind camp. There was a lone goat way up top below a cliff face. We starting discussing how we could get up there and how long it would be. Like stupid dummies, we didn't really pack overnight gear. We discussed if we had to, we'd go get some of those space blankets and maybe tough out a cold one if we had to. I did have my tent, but not a sleeping bag to backpack with. But we decided that we'd hit up Dink Mountain in the morning and decide on the goat behind camp later in the week.

We decided the next morning to spend the first bit of daylight glassing Dink Mountain. But from the bottom of the mountain, there's only so much property you can watch. Lots of ledges and cracks the goats can be bedded on. So we decided to start our hike in.

We got through the trail and hit the base of the mountain. Already soaked from the rain and walking through the wet vegetation. My dad ended up picking out some nannies and kids up near the snow line. We figured we'd make our way up and maybe jump more goats or spot something else.We spent the day climbing. On the way up, old pops there was making fun of the guys on hunting shows riding horses into a nice valley, shooting a goat, then having a bit of a pack and then riding horses back to camp. He was also wondering where our film crew as lol. I think they'd need both hands as well.

I said "this is why sheep hunters are gay"
Dad replied "I think they're smarter than us"
My reply was "Gay people can be smart"

We only had a couple hours of light left. It was our first day and we didn't want to blow our load on getting a better look at nannies and young billies. So we decided to head back to camp and be fresh for the next day.

The video doesn't make the climb down look that steep, just makes it look like my dad has small legs... but he does not

On the climb/crawl up I just kept saying "hands and knees"
On the way down, we had to shift into 4 low. Basically a lot of backwards and lowering ourselves down with the vegetation.

Great spot for goats! I too said "not that bad" 26 years ago at that same spot. Went way up that friggin rock face . . . nice view up high but the enjoyment was short lived. Was either the best or worst chopper ride of my life!

James was telling me your story about that. All the haywire stories of that place always escapes my mind when I start up that mountain.

Well long story short, we didn't end up getting my dad's goat. He went back up solo in November after all the heavy water. Tried a couple other spots. Never got one. He has an elk draw in McBride in February, but I'm trying to talk him out of that and go back up.

I had pretty much written off hunting season, well dedicated whatever time I had off to help my dad get his goat. Back in the summer my g-pa was diagnosed with cancer. I had traveled out to Edmonton for a week to take my girlfriend to see Trivium and Arch Enemy on the 21st. On the morning of the 23rd I got a call from my mom saying they had taken my G-pa into the hospital and they figured he wouldn't make it through the day. I was stuck in Edmonton and couldn't get away right then. Gramps had a rally on Friday and was able to call him. I was finally able to get out of Edmonton on Sunday morning. I hauled ass back home. I got home at 4:30 and spent his last hour with him.

To say the next few days to say the least was a whirlwind around the house. Me and my brother had to get away and decided to go for a drive on the morning of the 29th. Our one spot was getting traveled pretty hard. But we knew that in the back end, people wouldn't really be able to get in there without some work. So we headed back in there. There was no fresh sign or movement. We almost got to where we wanted to park and spotted a doe down the hill. There was a bit of a breeze and figured we'd take a quick jaunt down to her, see if any of her boyfriends were around. She slowly wandered off as we followed her.

We basically followed her to the spot we usually finish our walk we usually do.

So we decided to do our usual walk in reverse. The wind was kind of in our favor on top of that. We seen a couple does and a two point chasing tail and curling lips. I was kind of just contemplating things and not really paying too much attention. I don't take stock in higher powers and all of that. We were just coming up out of a ravine and I was thinking "wouldn't it be something if gramps hooked us up with a deer". Right then my brother whispered "buck".

I spotted a for sure third point and lined up on him. I couldn't quite put the fourth on him. My brother took two steps to his right and informed me he was for sure four. The deer was standing head on and I let one go. He kind of reared his head back a little, turned and then bailed down hill. All I could think "how the hell do I miss that?"

So we walked to where he was standing. No blood at all. The ground was hard, but we could see where he had been bounding. I heard a crash down below. But I thought maybe he was headed through the trees. We continued tracing his steps. We got to the bottom of the hill and hooked to the right and there he was laying there. I haven't had that sensation after getting a deer since my first. It just seemed poetic to me.

After we got up to him, we both realized that neither of us had grabbed a knife. So we got some pictures and the drag was on.

Just as my dad taught us, make sure you shoot a deer down in a hole. So the drag straight up hill with a full bodied deer was on.

I'm thinking since it was so cleanly cut, it was caused by a cougar.

Also upon further autopsy After dragging him a Km back to the truck, my bullet hit just to the deer's right and went in just ahead of his front shoulder, took out a lung and a liver and got trapped just under the hide in front of his right rear hip.

I cut him all up at my grandparent's place, my grandma took the trash out and gave me one of the best compliments I've heard in a long time. Beside bones, there wasn't even a grocery bag worth of discarded deer. My grandma said "well when you shoot something, you sure don't waste it."
