Hey folks, I'm looking at picking up a used Quad for hunting and general yard work on our property. Looking at used, and I'm kinda shying away at anything with over 4000k on it but I really have no idea what the shelf life of a good quad is. Given good regular maintenance and considering the bike hasn't been thrashed or sunk how many km is a quality quad good for ( narrowed the search to Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki)? How many k do you have on your well maintained (or thrashed) machine? I know I have 130,000 on my street bike and don't even think twice about it as I know how it's been maintained. Thanks for the input.

Hi...Don't know why your so fixed on only Honda ..Suzuki ..or Yamaha ..I have a Can-Am and they are an excellent machine ..A friend of mine just traded his Can-Am in that had 14000kms ..Nothing the matter with it ..He just wanted a newer one ..If you service them they will last a very long time ..Canadian made and great warranty ..I have friends that have Yamahas and they are forever fixing them..Can-Ams are twin cylinder and run great ..They also have an excellent suspension ...Anyway that's my 2 bits ..Good luck ..Dennis

I would shy away from anything belt driven and anything thats not a Honda. Personal preference I know but theres a reason people associate the term reliable with Honda.

1999 Honda 450 S .... 10,000km ...
1990 Honda 350 4Trax ....
Neither burns/leaks oil .... both run strong.
Trouble free machines.

2007 Arctic Cat H1 650, not a huge amount of K's (3000) but they haven't been easy ones. Only issues were not the fault of the machine. Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone's got one, do some research, decide what fits your needs and go get it.

Thanks, this is the kinda stuff I'm looking for. Even if I found something up around 10,000k. The amount I will probably use it I would be hard pressed to put another 20,000 on in my lifetime.

Not written in Stone. Support for the three Japanese bikes is closer and easier. I'm also looking for a 400-500 size machine. Most of the Can Ams I find are big bore machines. If a nice Outlander 400 dropped in my lap for a good price I would probably scoop it up. Look long enough and hard enough and you'll find horror stories regarding just about any make/model you choose. 140,000k is good info to stash away. Haven't had much at all to do with quads. Don't know whether they last 20,000 or 200,000. All in the maintenance I'm sure.

I bought my 2008 Honda Rubicon 500 new and have over 10,000kms on the odo. But it is likely closer to 12,000kms as I tend to turn the machine off and coast down any steepish logging road in order to save fuel and hunt in "stealth" mode. Machine is not trashed, but I haven't babied it either. Machine looks great still and runs awesome. I do have to do a little front suspension work to do though as I noticed some play in the upper arm assembly. Regular oil changes is all it has seen. Factory recommendations is to change all fluids on bike at the 10,000kms mark, so that will be something else I must do this year.

I think I said 14000 kms not 140,000kms ....I have a 650 and wouldn't go smaller ..I can pull a whole moose or elk and my quad isn't all straining ...Rather have enough not have to gun it to pull a load ..Mine is a 2 up max and Ive had another man and myself plus pulling a quad trailer full with a 620 lb elk and chainsaws ...Up a steep cutline in the bush and it didn't even give me any hiccups...I would rethink the 400 and consider the 650 ...Dennis

My wife and I both have Honda's . Just under 12000 on mine and 10000 on hers with nothing other than regular maintenance. So far I have never taken them into a shop for repair.
I have always kept them inside or under cover which seems to help alot.

1997 Kawasaki 400 Bayou totally outdated more like a Kubota than an ATV.We also have a Honda 420 with electric shift seems ok but electric shift is problematic. The old Kawi gets way more use the old style foot shift hard to beat.I dont know what new Kawis are like I suspect there that crap belt drive like most now

2009 Honda Rancher 420 AT 2955 km . Never had an issue with electric or auto shift on this one or the previous Foreman.. I have ridden most quads. I think for the most part if you do routine maintenance they all are pretty good. I just prefer Honda. I would never buy a Can Am because they screw Canadian buyers. Rather insulting considering how much of my tax dollar has gone into their vault.

2005 can-am outlander XT 400. 5300 kms. When I bought it a couple years ago it had almost no miles on it. Regular maintenance is all I've had to do since then

Sold a 650 Can Am Outlander Max 650 XT last summer. It had 4000km on it and 150 hours. No issues at all.

One thing to look at is the km's to hours, for example if the machine has ....say 1200 km's and 200 hours it most likely had heavy trail usage as well as hours in a mud hole or used as tractor.

The 4000/150 on my machine was 95% cruising at ~50km/hr.

My dad uses a 2004 kodiak which has been issue free, not sure on the mileage, and I use a '90 or '91 honda fourtrax that I'm sure has over 4000k on it, that things a little mountain goat, I personally would stay away from a big new on, too much electric crap to screw you over and you need either a big truck or trailer to haul them, and they can be a bit of a pain if you get into tight stuff, Ive actually ridden the Honda under the odd gate lol

'98 Yamaha Kodiak 400, manual 5 spd trans with high/low range, 4200 km.
Owned since new, just regular engine oil/gear oil changes and battery replacement about every 3-4 years, zero mechanical issues thus far.
Used but not abused, no damage other than the expected scratches and rub marks on the fenders.
Completely dependable, tight as the day it was built, I trust it totally and its never let me down.
Pulled and tugged more moose than I can remember, tough as nails with tons of low end grunt.
Love the older "gear jammer" transmissions, never fail, no worn/slipping belts to worry about.

Modern belts are maintenance free... even the sleds. In 20 years between sleds and quads changed 3 belts

In the last year's, between the quads I've owned and my current Arctic Cat 650H1, and Honda Pioneer 700, I am just shy of 20,000 kms.. ....a lot of riding
