I got a chance to go out a couple of days this week to the highcountry. It was hot and there were tons of bugs but I managed to find a few deer in the evenings. Had trouble closing the distance for good pics before dark. Here are the pics that turned out

The one night it clouded over early and they were out about an hour before dark. I also found quite a few bucks bedded out in the cliffs and slides during the day, I am assuming they were using the wind to get outta the bugs.

I was disappointed not to see any new fawns on this trip, mind you I only saw a handfull of does and the fawns could've been bedded in the bush.

Bruin,
Great pics of some great looking highcountry bucks. Thanks for sharing them with us. I just love seeing bucks in the reds above treeline.

Great shots of those bucks in their day beds. It shows why they can be so hard to see without help from good optics.

You can put the best optics in a hunters hands and he will class those same spots as those pictures and he will turn to me and adamantly say with all the confidence in the world that there are no bucks there.

absolutely phil, although right now they are really easy to spot with your naked eye because of their orange summer coats. They glow when the sun is on them. I think one of teh tricks is knowing where to concentrate your glassing efforts, for instance, I noticed that most where right up against the base of the cliffs when they were bedding high.
One of the problems that I had and seem to have often is steadying my spotting scope in a strong wind up top. I have braced it against rocks and it seems to work but it takes a while to set up and is not maneuverable. Does anyone have any tricks they use that can be employed on a backpack hunt?

Great pics, they sure do like to hole up in the rugged stuff eh? Looks more like goat country in places. Very nice!

great pics bruin, bring a 1 liter cloth bag and 1 foot of parchute cord ,fill the bag with rocks ,(at the top of the mnt),hang the bag of rocks from the tripod.sounds silly but it really does help steady your spotter.

Beautiful pictures, sort of makes the thought of taking down such a beautiful animal a hard pill to swallow then you get a nice drink of water and the pill slides down with ease - BAM nice shot mmmmmmmm yummy

thanks for sharing your pictures - they are awesome

This picture is the same buck as pic 2 only it was taken last year. He has since gained about 3 inches of width and some height and depth in his forks. I would say around a 185-190 buck. I couldn't get close enough for better pictures before dark unfortunately. Nice to see he made it through last season though, I am sure there are lots of his offspring running around.
