Finally got some antlers mounted and hung. I didn't really like the backing boards that are common, but I found a bit of arbutus around and was pretty pleased with the results. The wood is finished with 1 coat of boiled linseed oil.

Nice. Love live edge, both with/without bark.

The woods great, hate the sawed off skull look. Sorry. I mount a lot of antlers and build a form of wood and plaster, shaped and covered with leather or felt. Lots of dicking around but really nice finished product.

Ya I thought I would take more flack for the bone than I did, but I don't like the look of the covering either. I'm not into dressing things up into something they re not. However I am going to clean up the moose cap a little more. The structure of the bone with the sutures and curves have just as much figure as the wood imo. Just another thing to look at and part of the whole package.

Thanks for the constructive comment though; far better than just saying you don't like it.

Love it! Makes me want to change out my old particle board cheap stuff. did you have to kiln dry the wood?

The wood was sitting in a shed for 3 or 4 years so it was plenty dry. I have had success drying large volumes of wood with a home dehumidifier and a squirrel fan under a tarp. For small pieces like I have a micro wave does an excellent job and helps prevent warpage. The pieces I took were from a cant off the saw mill and cut with a chainsaw at a steep angle.

Looks great! I love the natural look. I am looking at doing something similar. How did you secure the antlers to the wood?

I don't know how the op secured his mount bud a good way is to just use heavy duty zip ties drill a few holes in the plaque run it through the skull this is fore a euro mount though full skull intact...

I predrilled some holes in the wood and bone and used #8 deck screws of appropriate length.

They look great...I'm about to do the same thing, I have a few deer racks I started to clean up nicely for a euro but decided they weren't worth the effort to finish the skulls perfectly...so I'm just going to skull cap them and clean up just the caps nicely, and mount pretty much exactly how you did it

I like when the skull cap cut starts in front of the eye socket on your deer, vs a harsh level cut on the moose...I think it looks nicer that way....either way both are very nicely done, wood looks great
