Tired of the Negative crap!

What were some of your best/most memorable years that you've had hunting over your career???
Post pics/details if you like.

Been hunting since the early 90's but for me, some of the best years were 2007 (year of the bears), 2010 and my personal best was only back in 2014 when everything seemed to go right .......despite after making several mistakes.

Will post some old pics tomorrow.

I wish that I had pictures. Best years from age 7-10. Dad got the truck stuck he had to push, I got a crash course on driving a 1956 Ford 4 speed, I didn't do so good. After that as soon as we hit the gravel I drove, like the country song (When Daddy Let Me Drive' by Alan Jackson)

No I take it back. When I did the same thing with my boy... Dam I miss those days.

2000 for me, following in a close second, 1965.
I badly broke both my left hip and elbow in Feb 29th 2000, yet through intense
rehab I was able to shoot a 3pt mulie and a 3pt whitetail with my 70lb compound
hunting bow during a solo hunt the first couple of days of that September. What
makes it so very special is that I was able to prove all the 'nay sayers' which included
my doctors, family, friends, and fellow workers wrong when they all said to forget
about continuing to hunt, hike, cycle, and run, as I would be lucky if I ever got to even
walk properly again.
In 1965 I shot a huge 4pt mulie (my first) and a doe on my first hunting trip in the Interior
without having my dad along. I brought my little 14 yr old brother instead. A very memorial,
eventful, and successful trip.

This year was my best I suppose. I got a nice moose and WT doe; the first of each. Got my 2 year old into a couple of fish, and he got a close up of my Dad's 8' sturgeon. I think its only going to get better as the kiddos get older so next year my answer will probably be different.

2008 for me - I tagged a 1x2 mulie buck in October for some good eats in the freezer, and a mid sized bull moose the first morning of hunting my LEH in November. A pic of Billwinkle, 'cause pics are always good, right?

My favourite HUNT ever was my 2014 spring bear, everything about it went perfectly. It was a spot and stock hunt with good time to assess him, stocked in to under 150 yds without him knowing we were there, perfect heart shot, easy recovery... All went as one hopes it would.

Too many great memories to count. But narrowed it down to 2.
My brothers' first can goose (1987) died in a pond with 10 ft of thin ice around the edges. After half hr trying to cast and snag it with a fishin pole, as we were without retriever at the time, the ole man stripped down buck naked and swam it to fetch it.
Years later (2001), after the ole man had suffered a stroke losing most of his speech and right side, I had yet to take a big game animal in his presence. On our first annual road hunting expedition we lucked out and found a young 4x3 mulie buck rutted up in the middle of the road after a Revy snowstorm pushed him down. That would be the first and last big game animal harvest we would share.
Lost track of tags punched, but nothing will ever top that one. I'd give all them tags back for one more road hunt with him, successful or not...

I started my hunting career in 1975 as a boy in Manitoba shooting gophers, grouse, squirrels and whitetail. Not many years later, we moved to BC and I continued what had been engrained into me. Pinning down a specific hunt would be futile as there have been so many. My father loved to hunt and was an incredible shot in any/all situations. ( the nut doesn't fall far from the tree ) Elk, moose, mule/whitetail, bear, icy creek crossings in your underwear; all great memories. The fondest, proudest moments of my career though, were being beside my sons and wifes first big game animals. Hopefully I'll figure out how to post pics here one day too.

Started in the early 60 s as a packer for dad lol. Then my own license by 73....... Ducks and pheasants for several years, progressing to moose, mulies, BTs, late 80s through the 90 to 2003 ...... We're epic. With a few years of Wt, Md, Elk, moose, the odd goat sheep, bear and Bou in the mix. Waterfowl throughout all those too. Them were my best, then. The bestest of the best though is yet to come. Keep pluggin away.

I had a major surgery in march 2011 and that spring went out bear hunting. Saw a bear walking down the road jumped out of the truck and was doing the sneak down the road the bear had no idea I was behind it following it. Went up a little hill beside the road layed my rifle on the stump and shot the bear it dropped went to the bear it was dead.
I came home buried the skull in the backyard for a year or so and then I kept the teeth. I also kept the claws and made a bear necklace with it.

My best year to date was 2015, not because I harvested a lot but because of the special moments with family I was lucky to experience the adventure with. As a kid I never missed the yearly goat trip, my brother on the other hand tagged along a few times. Hunting is really what brings us together but due to post secondary commitments the opportunities were slim for next couple years following grade school. 2015 the stars aligned and we were able to make a trip to our goat hole. On the second day of the hunt after an unconfident hike we were able to put two billies to bed at <10 yards. Our dad was able to watch the show through the spotter and ended up meeting us on the hill as we were packing up. To this day, this ranks as my best year, inches aside. I backpack hunt solo quite often, to which there is a certain amount of satisfaction; but I'll make that trip with family or friends 10 times out of 10 if possible. Another good thread SSS.

Many great years with many excellent memories with family and friends.

One that stands out for meat on the ground was 1997, first year I used my Husky 300 Win Mag.

6x5 elk down in the Muskwa.

2x5 moose down in the Okanagan.

6x4 mulie down in the Cariboo.

Seemed like everything came together that year. We ate well that winter!

My personal best year was my first year hunting. I wasn't an anti-hunter, I was just not "enthusiastically convinced" up to that point. What I found about myself that year, the limits, the experience, the enormous privilege and fulfilment of a successful hunt ...well, there aren't enough words to describe it.

I'm looking forward at the days my son and daughter will join me. Those will probably top this.

2017 is shaping up to be the best.
Made some significant life changes and plan to hunt a lot:
Bears in the spring
First stones trip in August.
Quick alpine muley trip to start Sept.
Rest of the month is dedicated to getting my first elk.
Moose in Oct either LEH or up north.
Rest of Oct and November is deer locally in region 8

I never did more than 1 big trip a year prior to this.
Previous best would be 2010 moose leh that my father forced me to still go on while he was on his deathbed. He stuck it out long enough to listen to one last successful adventure.

I've been very fortunate to have a lot of great years out there. '08 stands out in my mind. I finally drew a Dall Sheep tag after many years of dreaming and was very lucky to take a beautiful 12 year old ram on the 12th day hunting solo.

https://s19.postimg.org/wmue1k9f7/Tatshinshini_08_022.jpg

Then in early Oct my Dad and I took Allison on her first moose hunt and after hunting hard for 8 days we finally spotted a bull moose a mile away in a burn. We called him in and shot him at 3:00 in the afternoon 2.5 miles from the lake. We got him cut up and started walking out and arived at the lake well after dark.

https://s19.postimg.org/mglsikp0z/Tatshinshini_08_160.jpg

We were out hunting on the Island for blacktails at the end of Oct and I caught up with this nice buck. The biggest I'd shot in 15 years.

Great thread there SSS...started hunting in 09', best year would be I'd say 2011...that's when I really started to apply what I enjoy to hunting - hiking and less driving...

Got a nice spring bear, my first bear, unfortunately no pics....
then had my first experience blood trailing, on a solo hunt, after I gave a whitetail buck a neck shot, as that was all I had to aim for, from 250 yards......the way he jumped, I know I connected well, but he ran, and as whitetails do best, into the thick stuff he went..I waited a good half hour for him to lay down, then proceeded..
http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/y364/harrytoolips/DSCN0212_zpsputrpdrg.jpg (http://s1030.photobucket.com/user/harrytoolips/media/DSCN0212_zpsputrpdrg.jpg.html)

Good blood for a while, then the trail stopped, and no deer, I was looking all around for more blood or a deer - nothing, then I looked up, and realized that he was heading back out into the open, so he must have doubled back, so I went back on the blood trail, looking for another trail off of the original trail, sure enough...

http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/y364/harrytoolips/DSCN0215_zpseyj6gzo9.jpg (http://s1030.photobucket.com/user/harrytoolips/media/DSCN0215_zpseyj6gzo9.jpg.html)

And then I found him all piled up, which made me very happy...

http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/y364/harrytoolips/DSCN0217_zps8dce81a2.jpg (http://s1030.photobucket.com/user/harrytoolips/media/DSCN0217_zps8dce81a2.jpg.html)

Later that season, I also hiked in a little ways into a cut-block, and shot this tasty muley buck on pic below....I butchered him with the help of a brother and a buddy, we took the time to butcher him very well, cut all the silver skin off etc, it was well worth it, one of the best tasting deer I've shot, and the first one I tried butchering myself (and with friends)...a very rewarding season it was with several firsts..

Hooooly That grizz is huge!

the last 3 seasons have been very memorable for me, having only hunted for 4 or 5 seasons at this point the last 3 years have been years of "firsts" for me, but if I was forced to choose I think 2015 was my "best year". Started off by helping a buddy get his first black bear in the spring but the fall was the cherry on top that year. 3 friends and I drew a shared moose LEH which meant we could shoot 2 bulls. Ended up that only my best friend and I could make it on the trip so off we went for 10 days. We had been given some intel on the area by another buddy who drew a tag with his brothers for the month before and they knocked down a good size moose so we had an idea of where to look.
First day started out badly as we slept in till 8, dawdled around camp for an hour before driving up to the top of the mountain. First big valley we stopped at with decent sight lines, I hopped out of the truck, glassed for literally 5 seconds before seeing a big black speck on the opposite side of the valley. I looked at it for another 10 seconds before it swung its head towards us and yup, those are antlers! About 5-600 yards away. I have my best impression of a lonely cow moose and he made a beeline straight for us...with his younger brother in tow. 10 minutes later moose #1 stepped out of some pines 15 yards ahead of me broadside and down he went.

Meanwhile my buddy circled behind me, cut little brother off about 100 yards down the valley and 5 minutes after moose 1 was down, moose 2 was down and dead too. Spent the rest of the day dealing with moose, the next day doing nothing, and home the day after.

Growing up in a non hunting family I've been lucky to get into it (being a meat eater) in the last 5 years. First year was tag soup, second year was my first big game animal and my third year, 2015, was a 4 point mulie and an elk. I hope to be able to pinpoint a specific year in the future but every year I get out it's been exciting. Here's a few pics from 2015:

I have had some memorable years: I was lucky to have a childhood full of hunting and fishing which included my first big game animal (black bear) and a nice 4x4 alpine muley. Had some great moose hunts with my Dad as well.

In 2006 I killed my first and only Stone which I consider one of my best trophies to date with BC rams. That hunt was epic! I also managed to kill a 6 year old Billy and two WT bucks 5x5 and a 4x4.

2013 was also a great year:

As an adult onset hunter with only a few years under my belt last year was my best yet, filled with firsts.
Got an archery Mule buck
First whitetail which was also my first rifle animal and my first big game animal I got with no help whatsoever.
First (and second) turkey
First couple grouse
A few rabbits
And my first duck.
This year I plan to take my dad out hunting for the first time in his life and try to connect on something. My wife is currently working on her hunter's ed course as well. It should be another great year.

Long ago a four year span roaming the Bucking Horse was the epic of my hunting . Two Bull Moose and one Bull Caribou taken with a Chek-Mate Recurve . One Bull Caribou taken with a compound bow .
Elk have long avoided me and this oldtimer is running out of seasons , could use some help on this one !!!!!

2014 was a year that I'm sure I'll never forget. Many mistakes were made but the animals just kept coming back. It was like I was a puppet and someone else was pulling the strings. I lost Dad fall before so who knows??

The spring started out with what is still my single most memorable experience to date....my 11 year old daughter's first bear.
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/11265296_104547833215107_4010350109879248130_n.jpg ?oh=75af5ac714a98800327ea62390499f92&oe=593B8314

Next was a trip of a lifetime where everything went right....I mean EVERYTHING.

https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/16996202_419895401680347_5879422678690300550_n.jpg ?oh=f9ec71670c546ede0f66ecbeb4012706&oe=593D6201

Next was an opening day mule deer from my daughter...SsS.

Then a private land archery muley for me. Definitely didn't feel the same as a crown land buck but with my schedule, I'll take it.

Then my bonus trip that I won at the BCWF fundraiser to West Texas. It was in Feb of 2015 but to me that's the same license year.....Lady luck was certainly on my side for the entire year.

Also added a national sporting clays championship in AA class and to top it off my first child is on the way. A year of great shooting in all disciplines ;)

2016 was a great year for me as well.

even though I didn't cut all my deer tags I still managed to fill both freezers to the top. 2 spring bears for me, 1 with a buddy on a pre-scout up in region 5 for moose.

45.5" Leh bull in late September.

Mule deer late Oct

Went back up to help buddies with their Leh for Oct 15-31, we had no luck in filling the tags but I did manage to get a nice 2 point 6 hours into the trip, the rest of camp was rather not impressed that I was there for a 3 hour sleep then up and bagged a deer on my first hike. They had been there for 10 days already and not seen a single animal. Friend and I show up around 2:00am on a Friday night. Quick sleep and were up heading into a location I knew held some moose, after a hike in buddy and I go to hang a scent, managed to dump a 1/4 bottle of urine on my arm and leg... as Im gagging and both of us laughing our butts off we finish by hanging a camera and talking about where we want to place the next one. On the short hike out of a trail to the bottom of a cut I see some deer looking at us in the forest. Buddy was carrying my gun at the time as I had my hands full of gear and now urine... I ask him to pass it to me. Scope up, bone ! had to almost stand on my toes and find the smallest gap to get a shot off. Boom, everything scatters and we see the buck run into the timber to the side of us.

Wait 10 minutes and walk to point of impact, no blood, no hair... uh oh. Buddy with me is a brand new hunter and has never seen a deer shot before. First animal down was the bear on our pre-scout and then the moose a few weeks after. I say lets sit on that log there where we seen him run in and wait another 20. Go to sit down and bright red foamy blood, right on good sign. Again I say lets sit and wait a few. 15 minutes go by and we start the walk in, get about 10' from the log and hes piled up, didn't go more than 30 yards.

Finished for big game, never did fill my doe tag but had a stellar waterfowl season despite the snow. Transitioned from the fields to the rivers and had some wicked days.

Looking forward to spring bear, even though I didn't get my spring grizz leh buddy and I are still heading up to that zone for black bear and grizz scouting.

BUMP!

I hate to brag, but I was right! 2017 was by far my best hunting year. While I did not make it on every hunt I hoped I would I did manage the following:

-June colour phase blackie
-Aug Stone's with Rhyno
http://archive.journalofmountainhunting.com/2017/09/my-first-sheep-hunt/
-Oct LEH Moose
http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?141911-Enough-with-the-elk!-It-s-moose-story-time&highlight=pg83
-Oct 2x3 Muley with my seven year old son(his first big game animal to be a part of). He has the euro skull in his bedroom!

It's going to be tough to beat, but I'll give it a try!
Hope others had their best year in 2017 as well.

It was my best season thus far, learned lots about elk, got stung in the early season hunting elk when it was hot on the pecker by a wasp which was a sign I guess that I was going to have a good season - harvested my best whitetail buck, helped my main hunting partner get a nice 4 point muley, and shot another whitetail buck in the rut later season..

Although I've had some pretty good seasons over the years 2017 was by far my best and I never even pulled the trigger. My ten year old daughter harvested her first deer a 4x4 whitetail after sitting in the blind for a few days in September. Then she followed it up with shooting a nice fat mule deer spiker in October while going for a drive one evening.... even mom got to see her in action. Never been more proud in all my life.

I understand that your pecker was safe when the wasp was stinging your ear and neck, but there was considerable danger when he was near your hand. 8-)

First year in ages that I didn't get hammered by at least one wasp during hunting season. I'm getting smart in my old age and flip the tab on my pop cans so they can't climb inside. I've had a couple of bad experiences with those little bassturds in camp in the last few years!

Every year has had some personal bests, to the year I helped a young fellow get his first bull elk, to the years I've grand slammed my moose, elk, 3 deer, a bear, and a couple of wolves all in one season. I'm trying to be a little more selective so I don't have to share so much of my wild game meat between the seasons.

Best year was 1984. My 2 brothers and I used my old 1976 CJ5 Jeep to cross a river to get as far into the bush as we could get. Set up a tent camp and hunted from there on foot. No ATV's in those days. Got my first moose ever, and it was a nice one. Three weeks later, in a different wilderness area, got my first public land whitetail buck. Was stand hunting on a deer trail. I was the youngest out of the three of us, and the first to connect on moose and deer. VERY THRILLING!!!

The late 70's and early 80's also were some really great years for me and my young family.
We would stay in my dad's cabin on Bridge lake and spend our time out hunting, eating wild
raspberries, and just thoroughly enjoying the autumn. Every year we got our limit of grouse,
got at least one mule buck, and usually a bull moose.

Years are made by making the most of every hr, of the day, of the week.
This is how I spent yesterday.

You are not restricted to a hunting season to enjoy the outdoors and learn about wildlife.
Get out there boys.

Lol ya I always look around when taking a piss in the woods now....when my hunting partner was there and wondering wtf was going on when I was swearing and I told him, he had a tough time believing me but when I offered to whip it out to prove it he started laughing hysterically...

Last spring I got both my bear tags filled. Filled up on grouse this season too just no deer. Can’t complain though

Sounds like a good haul. If it weren’t for bears and grouse I would’ve gotten skunked.
