Heres some pics of a muley I followed while scouting. What is you guess hell score when I dump him this fall? What are mulies, at about 80% total growth at the moment?

168-175ish

WoodOx
07-11-2007, 11:51 PM
I would say 140 in the pic, yes. Really depends upon how his back forks develop, right now they would kill any chance at a decent score. ive seen his genetics on a few others deer in that area, and would guess he might make 160 gross once he is completely done growing. He horns just break his ears...

That fuzz can be really deceiving.

If you follow 'em through until September I think you'll find he's a run of the mill 4 pt.

My guess (a poor one at that) is a mid 130s class buck by the time he cleans up.

The Bad News:
Jeez, that looks like a 14 inch inside spread that may scratch a gross of 140.

The Good News:
Jeez, he's probably young enough to be in the exact same spot come this September. (Carpenter Lake???, LOL).

andrew good pics and even better you got close enough to him although at this time it's easy enough to stumple upon that calibur buck while hammering away and building tree stands. haha as for pulling the trigger or bow on him i'd have to wait and see how the year pans out and if it's late enough in the season that 130-140 buck may be a nice adition to the freezer. Hold out buddy i know you're a good hunter just remember the more you pass up the better chance you are going to have at getting a monster. Be willing to hold out for a season or two even 5-7 season for a big boy. On that note peach fuzz is very decieving just look at the age of some of these youngsters in high school for example....14 and beards?? wierd...... thats all im gunna say good luck we'll get out soon bud take care all.

let him grow he is a dink!!! but then again i dont think he will ever hit monster status unless he is only 2 years old:mrgreen:

Not one thing in the pole said why i would drop him ,i would drop him because he would be a good eating deer ,i am not a trophy hunter ,i have always have taken the first legal animal for eating purposes ,but will not take a spike deer ,fork or better.

WoodOx
07-12-2007, 08:42 AM
Yes, as GG said he will be around some sept.

He has a relative with good mass, is wider, and has lots of junk. Gunna try and snap some shots of him.

Although I respect your opinion 1947, I dont shoot primarily for meat. I m planning to hold until I find a 180.

Just thought it would be fun to see some opinions!

He's all yours ! Looking forward to the actual score when you dump him like you say!

That "little" guy on the far right has a better body mass than the one you're considering. Have a good look at him.:-|

Mr. Dean
07-12-2007, 09:24 AM
He's got decent length but lacks width and (I think...) mass.

If it's a B&C wall hanger you're after, keep look'n.

Mmmmmmm, deer sausage! We can shoot 3 deer provincially. Unless I had a hog muley pinned down in the region where that guy lives, I'd be making a trip to the butcher's for sure. 135 - 145 is about right on the score...the real score is 100...pounds of sausage. 8)

Whats most interesting is peoples votes on the poll. Perception is king, as apparently the majority would take him.

What percentage of hunters, annually, harvest a buck over 150?

Kirby
07-12-2007, 10:09 AM
He has potential depending on his age. He will never be a really wide buck, but if he got more length and mass he would be an ok buck.

I don't annually harvest a 150 but I do annually pass them up.

Those are nice pictures of mule deer. I saw 120 mule deer in one day north of Kamloops in the last part of the season last year, if you wait or hold off on smaller bucks in the beginning of the season you will see lots later. When middle of October comes bucks will start chasing does around. In November find doe in heat you will see that size of buck and bigger. Hunt on higher ridges off the road about an hour walking in you get buck. that buck in picture is a three year old.

If you want him, take him. But if you are lookin for a 180 buck, let him walk. He'll be a long ways shy of your goal by the time he's done. If he's got you excited though, maybe you should lower your standards.

Mr. Dean
07-12-2007, 11:56 PM
Would you take him?

To be honest, I couldn't say. I'd have to evaluate the situation at the time he presented himself.

For certain though, I wouldn't spend time pursuing him NOW. I'd keep looking for Big Bro.

07-13-2007, 06:21 AM
Wipe the milk off his lips and let him keep growing, hes a nice little buck but definatley need a few more seasons... it would be hard to give up a region 3 tag for that little guy.

hunter1947
07-13-2007, 06:40 AM
To me meats meat if you take him ,it would be the same thing as taking a bigger one ,a tag is canceled if you take the small guy or a bigger one.

With the slash pile in the back of the one pic, I would guess you wont even get a shot at him becuase the millions of youths:rolleyes: out there hunting with guns ruining the chances for all the bow guys will either shoot him first or push him into the timber.

If your gunning for a 180 or anything close that guy will need a few years Or you could take a youth out and get them a fantastic first deer.

BHB, your suggestion is the best of the bunch.

I wasnt planning on necessarily taking him - I just wanted to see people opinion on deer size and personal perceptions.

Its on private property - wont be any youth in there hunting, cept my cousin (15 yrs old) who I will take in for archery.

cheers

Nevermind what other pepole think of a deer, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A trophy buck to you certainly isn't a trophy to everyone else.

I personally could care less about what others think of the animals I take, If it turns MY crank it goes down!

With that being said you are obviously not interested in it as after the feedback it sounds like it is too "dinky" for you. Take your cousin out there to bag it, my guess is the buck would tickle the young guys fancey! He might even be nice enough to give some of the great tasting meat from an early September buck.:)

its 12x optical, 4x digital. upto 12 you can wobble all you want, itll still be clear. the closer you get to 48 the more blurred it can be without a stand.
