View Full Version : What do you ALWAYS carry on you? Not in a pack etc

Thread title says it....while you're out hunting, what's always on you (in your pockets, on your belt, etc)?

Thought came to me as a result of the "bad shot" thread and not having a knife except in the pack.

For me:

1. Larger "survival" knife (Gerber BG Ultimate Pro with a couple of feet of FireCord wrapped around the sheath) on my belt

2. Leatherman Wave on my belt

3. Havalon Piranta in my leg pocket (assuming I'm wearing cargos)

4. DeLorme Inreach on my belt

5. Usually a small but high lumens Cree based waterproof flashlight on my belt or sometimes in a pocket

6. Extra magazine

7. One single bullet for whatever rifle I'm carrying

8. Tags and license and PAL

9. Light Merino wool toque and neck gaiter and light gloves (assuming weather requires such)

10. Small USB power bank / battery pack and corresponding charging cable for DeLorme and phone

11. iPhone and waterproof or battery case

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I also have but yet to use a leg holster in which to carry bear spray.

No matter what, I don't leave the cabin, truck, atv, or go hiking without a flint and knife. If u have those two items you can survive (with the proper practise). Plus a flint doesn't matter how soaking wet it is, it will always light. It's a little barbaric but when I go out hunting, those two items i won't even thinking about not leaving behind. Head lamps, water proof bla bla I can make an acception to leave behind, but a flint and knife, I will def turn around and make sure I got it. And I always carry two of each. Axes, paracord, water proof bags, etc are always nice, but a bare bone survival and safely net is simply a good sharp knife and a flint.

Creature comforts are nice, but if we are talking the must go to can't live without can't hunting without those would be mine.....

but a stupid side note not to sound cheesy, the best thing I can take into my "pack" is my knowledge and history. Even to this day after decades of hunting, I'll randomly find an hr or two and make a shelter or practise making fire in all kinds of terrible Mother Nature conditions. It's easy to make a fire in sunny summer weather, -30 snow 3 foot deep with a wind much different.

Small sog hawk fits lightly in the back of my belt it's light enough for me. Having said that im 6'11" and over 300lbs so maybe not for everyone. Sometimes I put the light and other stuff in a bag depends on the hike. If I'm in clear cuts I'm usually sitting and waiting. If hiking trails it's mostly in my bag.

X2. And if his is what you have in your pockets, I'm afraid to ask what you carry in your pack!

X3 - I can't wear a pack with anything around my waist, this year I even bought a cloth belt to reduce the waist belt interference. My pockets are more or less empty - maybe a lighter and maybe a small folding pocket knife that's used for lunch 99% of the time lol. Everything is in the pack - frequent use items in the top, one-offs (kill kit / survival gear) in the bottom. Clothing and lunch in the middle.

My pack is usually packed for the day I'm planning. If I'm breaking the day in two (early hunt and back to the truck for lunch, re-located and then PM hunt) my pack reflects that. If I'm going all day - and back to the truck in the dark - my pack is heavier. Over night is a whole other thread.

On my person? Extra bullets.... I think that's about it. Everything else is in the daypack. For short little hikes not straying too far from the vehicle? Toilet paper, bullets, phone, lighter.

Not trying to derail but, I always stash the keys near the vehicle, as keys have a tendency of getting lost. Imagine a brutal day on the mountain, soaked and frozen. Get back to the vehicle only to realize that your keys are gone. Yikes!

Keys definitely at the vehicle, especially if 2 or more people are relying on said vehicle. Could make an argument for packing them on a solo venture, but IMO they're the epitome of dead weight.

Spare truck key is wrapped in electrical tape and zap strapped to an area of the undercarriage that is essentially untouchable (rocks scrapes etc). Obviously the one time I needed it I was in a foot of mud but it sure beat playing survivorman while I looked at my food, backpack and heated (locked) escape pod all night!

Other than than that knife, fire and snacks - psychologically I'm ****ed if I ever have to start eating dandelions!!!

in hunting season there's obviously all that stuff too.

Ive played with better/bigger survival belts/fanny packs but I just seem to omit them more than I use them.

These are awesome responses. I'll definitely be modifying things a bit.

Forgot to mention that my bino harness is always on, too (except last year when I forgot it in the truck the one time...idiot...).

The Gerber knife that I carry has a sharpener, a whistle, and a ferro rod, as well a stainless steel pommel that can be used as a hammer (of sorts). Making fun of Bear Grylls is a given, but this knife is pretty slick.

http://www.gerbergear.com/Knives/Fixed/Bear-Grylls-Ultimate-Pro_31-001901

I've never had stuff on my belt interfere with my pack's waist belt. Must just be either a poorly fit pack or my body's an odd shape that allows for both.

I should carry a compass on me, for sure - always one in the pack, but should have one my person. Although, I really should learn some orienteering skills first.

Great responses - thanks all!

small first aid kit -various things inc first aid tape polysporin
small sewing kit
about 10' parachord
2 small pouches of water (from an earthquake kit)
about 2 cups of mixed nuts and a few small chocolate bars

That reminds me that my Outback has a feature where you can lock your keys in the car and then use a code on a button on the car to lock/unlock it.

With all of the newfangled keys that are electronic based, I wouldn't feel comfortable "stashing" one...at least not without getting a very small dry bag to keep it in...wouldn't trust that to a ziploc!

I wear one of these guys:
http://www.alaskaguidecreations.com/product/kodiak-c-u-b/

cost a bit, but i use it all the time!
Main compartment:
-8x42s with room to spare

Rear pocket:
Licenses in a waterproof ziploc, sometimes a folded map.

In the left side pocket:
-k&m match case wrapped in a length of paracord https://www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/waterproof-match-case.html
-swiss army knife farmer https://www.swissarmy.com/ca/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/Medium-Pocket-Knives/Farmer-Alox/p/0.8241.26

In the right side pocket:
-butane lighter
-headlamp
-extra headlamp batteries

front pocket:
-Small waterproof container of Advil
-full size compass
-clif bar (sometimes)
-full zippo (sometimes)
-alcohol swabs

Finally, I slide a spyderco paramilitary2 into the elastic top pocket

Because it's contained, it's easy to grab, and therefore I always grab it. I used to get lazy and leave half of that stuff behind, sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident. Not anymore.
