Some of us beat the winter blues by heading out and hunting predators.

If you shoot a coyote this winter and want to share a picture or story, feel free to add to this thread. Any info on guns, bullets, scopes, calls, setups for calling, baiting, etc, can be asked here and maybe we can help out in any ways.

Coyotes, WOLVES, lynx, bobcats, cougars...trappers post up too!

I got out for the first time this winter the other day, hiked a mile to a spot where I've had some success over the years. Was a little bit of fresh sign of coyotes on the walk in, but had no luck calling. Set the Foxpro Fusion 25 yards in front of me and sat tight for 25 minutes and played some howls and rabbit distress/crows & ravens, ended in pup distress. Was quite windy and -1c, not ideal. Sun set was beautiful, but right in my eyes and lighting me up. Hope to get out tomorrow for a bit in the morning

This winter I am going to mainly be packing my Tikka T3 in 223, restocked in a McMillan Sako Compact. Scope is a Vortex Viper HS LR 4-16x50 with first focal plane XLR reticle. Currently shooting 60gr Nosler BT @ 3050ish FPS but almost out of this load, will switch to the Hornady 53gr hollow points, they shoot really nice with IMR8208xbr at around 3250 fps.

I also have a CZ 527 American 17 Hornet I'd love to whack a dog with. Shot one last winter with it but only found a tuft of hair, I'd like to try it again a few times before I write it off as a coyote rifle. Last winter I was using the 20gr Vmax @ 3500ish fps, this winter I've switched to the 25gr hollow point @ 3200. Should penetrate a bit deeper and less likely to splash compared to the Vmax. This rifle shoots really nice, I have it topped with a Leupold Fx3 6x42. This cartridge has 1/5th the recoil of a 223, can see the impact through the scope, really fun cartrige. Burns 10 grains of powder

If I go after wolves I'll grab my 7mm SAUM, 150gr Nosler BT's @ 3075 fps. Leupold Vx3i 4.5-14x40 CDS - bit much for coyotes

Calls, this will be my 2nd season with the Foxpro Fusion. Have the SP60 external speaker for those windy days. Awesome call, I've been using Foxpro since 2005, upgraded here and there over the years. Started with the Fx3, then Fx5, then Firestorm. They make a great product. I really like the TX1000 remote on the Fusion, and the ability to play two sounds at once. I feel it made a difference last year. Lots of guys are using electronic calls these days and if you can throw them something different, it really helps. The decoy I am using is Mojo's Super Critter.

Had good success last year in the limited time spent calling. Was at 20% success on the stands I made. Here's some pics of last years hunts

Love the predator threads! Went out scouting last couple days looking for good sign, first area had a fair amount of yote track so probably hit that after new years.Second area not much coyote sign but deer and rabbit everywhere!I could hear wolves in this area and wonder if they have pushed the lesser dogs out?Anyway one spot for yotes and one for wolves:cool:

223? 22-250? I shot two last year with a 63gr soft point from my 223, close shots (30ish yards). One was a frontal DRT and the 2nd was broadside, it did the egg beater a couple times and was done. Very minimal damage

I have a Ruger MKII lam. stock .220Swift and a few brass-180 or so. I also have 200 55-NBTs and lots of RE-15, will work up some loads and shoot it later in the month when I drive to Naramata to see Terry.

Want to run at warmish .22-250 speeds to save the throat as this is my only varmint rifle and I cannot afford more guns.

Made five stands today over 12km. Good workout! Luck was with me on the 5th set, started with some howls and yipping. Switched to Slow Jack Distress at the 8min mark. Few mins later I spot a coyote coming across the field at about 500 yards. It would charge in, stop, pounce in the snow, get distracted looking for a mouse for a bit, then charge in another 50 yards and repeat. It dropped out of sight behind a rise for a few minutes, thought maybe it would pop up a hundred yards in front of me, but it showed up 230 yards out heading right to left, mousing. I had switched to rodent coaxer, showed no interest. Back to rabbit distress, it just looked my way and kept mousing. Oh well. Safety off, scope on 16x, all the time in the world. Got nice and steady on the stix and let one rip quartering away at 230y +/- . Coyote spun on impact a couple times and lunged uphill quartering away. I reloaded and as it slowed down and stopped, turned and faced me. Held a little bit higher than the first shot and fired again. Nice solid whomp and its down. 223 Rem 60gr Nosler BT. Ranged it twice at 271 yards. Nice female. First shot looked like it hit the right front leg at the joint and angled into the neck, bit of a gash in the hide. Second shot frontal, no exit. Nice 2km drag to the truck, burnt off some Nanaimo bars

Speaking of knoshing on coyote. Years ago when we were about to have the Quesnel Rod & Gun annual banquet we would enlist a couple of trappers to garner up some exotic table fare. As a result we had coyote, cougar, lynx, beaver, porcupine to serve along with the regular game like deer, moose, mtn goat, sheep and caribou.
I have tasted coyote and I would have to be starving to ever eat that again. Just not that palatable. The cats were sweetish tasting and porcupine listed high. If you tasted beaver, you've tasted them all. The older ones were a bit raunchy.

Good day out today did a 5 km loop and called from 2 stands.First time trying the mantis 75r and it worked! Used coyote challenge call a few times and we had big male come charging out of the tree line at roughly 400 yards! He was to quick for us so no shots but at least I know this caller works.

I got schooled again today...as the usual.

I went to my go-to place and had 3-5 dogs answer immediately after my first female long howl on the Foxpro.....but this time they were on crownland. They immedialtely escalated to challenging me. I waited for a few minutes then went to fawn-in-distress.
No further response so I went to pup in distress as I've have aggressive responses in the past.

that was it. No further communication from them.

Anyone have suggestions? They have owned me the last couple years.

I've found when they challenge with howling, especially if there's more than one, I have best luck by challenging back, usually with a lone young male challenge or young female. If they hang up still, but keep howling, I got to pup distress, wounded coyote, or you g coyote fight. Pup distress being most successful.

Made it out before dark for a stand. Hiked in a couple KM and set up about 500y from a big chunk of timber where I've called a few out of in the past. I would of liked to set up closer to the timber but light as running out so I felt my time was best spent calling rather than walking. A coyote can cover ground pretty quick if they want to and I was banking on that happening. Set the Foxpro & SP60 external speaker and MOJO super critter about 40 yards from where I was hid. Started with female long howls. A pack of coyotes lit up in the timber about 700 yards away. I switched to rabbit distress and played it on and off for a while. Switched to pup distress. Nothing. I could hear someone blowing on a distress call to the north of me . I think thats the first time in my life I've ever heard someone calling when I've been out. I switched the Foxpro to some challenge barks and howls and then did a bit of female in heat whimpers and howls until dark. Never did see anything come out to take a look, was on stand for 45 mins

Went out again today. Still have yet to call in a dog or even get any kind of response after about a half dozen trips over the last couple years. Starting to get pretty frustrated. This was only my second time out trying an electric call however.
Not sure what I'm missing to this yote game. I'm in areas with tons of sign. Track everywhere, turds and piss stains all over. Cattle ranches near by.
I don't have a fancy fox pro caller just one with 10 different sounds. A few distress calls, some pup distress, ki yi, fawn bleat. Couple other simple sounds.
I usually walk in to an open sage brush area with sparse timber and set up and let everything calm down for a few min. Usually start with a rabbit distress or something like that at low volume for a min then off for a min. Then back on at full blast for a min the off for a min or so then switch to something else like pup distress or coy&coon for a min or two. Wait a few min then leave. Drive to a new spot and repeat.
Another thing is my call isn't responding well from distance so I have to keep it right beside me.
How far do you guys usually travel before setting up another stand? I would have thought you could "call out" an area if you were too close between stands?
Look forward to some tips for this newb. Thanks boys

if you're only on stand for 10 minutes you're walking away from a lot of action. I'd suggest staying on stand for 25 minutes at least, if not 45 minutes if you're in a good spot and/or you hear some coyotes or catch a glimpse of one earlier in the set

LeverActionJunkie

^+1 I like to stay 30 mins, and if I have a good feeling, or have had good luck there before I'll call 45min and wait 15mins after shutting the call off. I wouldn't get hung up on biggest and best calls, first electronic I ever bought was a $40 cass creek unit, it called a few. Hand calls work as well, and in some people's hands better.

The situation StoneSheepSteve described is one where I wish I was a better hand caller. Allows quicker response and communication with yote vocals.

I usually start a set with a few mins of magpies, or red squirrel. Some soft wilderness critter while I settle in a d take a few yardage checks. Then Depending on location I will go to distress sounds or coyote vocals. Used to have a few spots that an invitation howl would almost always get a vocal response. Some are better suited to hare, woodpecker, deer distress.

When doing vocals I do a sequence the. Wait a while to listen and watch. Surprising what happens sometimes. With distress I let the call run and vary the volume. Watched a Byron South video where he recommended leaving the distress calls running as sometimes predators will hang up when sound stops and continue when it starts again.

You guys need to watch out hunting the grasslands so close to town. I have called in families walking the dog up there. A little bit of a bummer when a labradoodle is making a beeline for your decoy. The kids are a little shocked when a guy in camo pops up with a rifle, lol.

took my 223 for a walk this morning after breakfast. Beautiful sunny day, -2c. Spot a coyote bedded out in the field at approx 500 yards. Left my rangefinder at home...sneak up a bit, it stands up. I estimate 325-350 yards. Boom. Miss. It runs off a bit but not far. Aim a bit higher. Boom. Miss. Boom, Miss. Boom. Miss. Out of ammo. Coyote stops, looks back at me. Knows I am out of ammo. I bark a few times and it starts walking towards me. I keep walking towards it, barking. Ended up getting to within 75 yards of it. :-x My range estimation game was off today, I think first shot was closer to 200y that 350...........

Headed out at first light this morning. First stand I started with some coyote howls. 7 minutes in, one shows up on the horizon at 500 yards. I switched to rabbit distress and it started to come a little. A second coyote appeared, and the two did a bit of posturing and took off to the west out of sight. A third coyote is in front of us 400 yards out, loping right to left and it disappeared as quick as it appeared. Seen about 60 deer, one nice mule deer still packing both sides.

Second stand nothing. Third stand lots of wolf tracks from a few days ago, hiked in a couple KM and set up on a straight stretch of a cutblock road. No action. Fourth stand heard a bunch of coyotes howling a mile away so we drove the truck closer and set up. Fifth stand (noon) started with howls and some jackrabbit distress, 8 mins in a coyote pops up about 250 yards away. It looked behind itself so I thought maybe more were coming. It slipped through the fence and starting loping towards us to our 9 o'clock. Never did stop for a shot, disappeared behind a rise and was gone. Went a short ways and set up again, no action

My last stand. Happened a little while back .I had 1 day to go hard , and the wind was my enemy . But had to push , last chance. I ran the call , set after set nothing , except wind and then blowing snow, whiteout. While changing spots I caught a glimpse of a grey wolf , I carried on down the rd and parked the truck . Did a long set with female vocals then male challenge then pup distress. Hung around there for about 1 hr , nothing , wind was headed right to it and I new I didn't have a chance but gotta try . So noticed a trail leading to an opening many kms away. Would be my last stand . 10 mins into jack distress I notice a yote coming in , As soon as he got to the top of a hill he cowered down , scented or seen me ? Then disappeared . I thought that was it . I ran female vocals , nothing ,then onto pup distress and hes coming back hard and fast , until he met 55 grains from my 22-250 . The last stand was a success . I look forward to next year . Hopefully with some new gear also . :-P

hey guys, know this thread had been dead for a while but I was looking at buying some hand calls (don't have the budget for electronic ones) plus I might be able to use them bear hunting. But what would you guys say are go-to hand calls I could look into buying?

Primos calls are good, when I used to use mouth calls I used some Ed Sceery ones, Knight & Hale rabbit distress. They're all workable. good luck

There is a lone wolf up by my cabin. I've been seeing tracks for the past month and briefly say him/her last trip. Not sure why it is solo, doesn't seem big enough to be a young male that would be driven from a pack.

Any suggestions for calling a lone wolf vs. a pack? I have a rabbit in distress call but I'm not opposed to buying an electronic caller.

You can kill wolves using coyote tactics. I'd start with a few coyote howls spaced out over 5 minutes. After a bit of silence I'd start on the distress calls

Find fresh tracks before you start calling. That wolf can wander for miles and miles in a day. Be patient, it may take a while for him to wander to the call. Also keep a sharp eye out, they can be harder to spot than you think.

A trick I have used to get coyote and lynx attention at close range in a pinch is making rodent sounds by basically sucking on the back of my hand. It’s not loud but you can get a large number of sounds and it works. It also saves movement of reaching for a call when they are close but no shot

its a true hand call you never forget lol

Some of us beat the winter blues by heading out and hunting predators.

Nice work! How many dead yotes can fit in the camaro? ;

Do you still have your predator hunting website?

I sold the rights to Predator Hunt Canada to Marc, owner of HuntingBC. He has never flipped the switch on the predator forum launch

Nobody getting out yote hunting this year?

I was in a splint up until Christmas since that incident butchering that goat late Nov so I've been kinda housebound. Butttttt, I've got full motion back in my hand with minimal discomfort so it was time to get out even if it was just to the other end of my field lol. Started with a short rabbit distress off a hand call. First yote came running into the stationary decoy immediately followed by 4 others. At about 60 yards I took the lead yote which went down immediately. Played some pup distress which stopped the pack and took the 2nd at roughly 120, which ran 20 yards and collapsed at the follow up shot. Didn't shoot at the other 3 because I didn't like the direction they were heading, with houses and such (this is the Okanagan).

Great work Kopper, I've been out with my buddy, used his fox pro but no success with that yet but we did nail one out of the vehicle, but unfortunately no pics, it was unexpected and we were with the kids...lol and of course today I was taking my son hiking to setup the trail cam and we see one, no gun..
