Obese Easter mountain lion. Since they don't officially exist the deer don't know to run away!

legs look a bit too skinny and fur too short for a cougar...I'm guessing a deer

as a cougar stands twice as short as whitetail deer. Because they have legs twice as short as a deer i have seen lots of cougar in my time i pretty sure your looking at cat. And not a very big one either Port Alberni area has a large population of Puma, cougar, mountain lion.what ever you want to call them

Thank you everyone for your responses.. I do have many pictures of deer standing in this area and they seem to be about twice as tall as the animal in question...some people have suggested it is a bobcat?? I think its a cougar.

.i posted it on a BC Hunting website, Because BC hunters will more likely know a cougar when they see one then an Ontario hunter..

Not sure how to crop and expand picture

but if anyone can do this for me and post a better picture from what I have posted it would be much appreciated..

with sincere respect.. Chomper

That is a cougar no doubt. Zoom in look at its back leg stepping right where its front leg is. Cat trait. Look at the body, it is not a deer. Cougar. Done deal.

Hmm why not..lol..I'm thinking cougar the back is rounded muscular..not deer shaped. .same with low hanging neck size , angle..front right leg looks cougar shaped..and thick where a deers leg tapers more..comes down low enough and thick enough to preclude a deer.

Looking at specific parts and then the first glance overall impression is cougar. .
Be real interested what Chilcotin hillbilly thinks..he is far more knowledgeable on cougars..

Thanks for all your replies.. I think its a cougar too.. I have pictures of deer in this area and the does are about twice as tall as that animal and just about same length from ass to front end.... when I look at both pictures I have quickly one after another I can see movement in bushes about a foot behind animal that might be a tail?.. Unfortunately it is not a great picture but a retired CO I know says he is 95% sure its a cougar and has sent the pictures to the MNR science lab for analysis. .thanks again..but still any additional opinions are very much appreciated..

Looks like a cougar to me just by what muscle and skeletal structure I can identify through this pic, my great grampa just recently sold his hunting camp on Manitoulin Island, he is coming out in the Spring I will have to ask him to have a look.

I saw a full grown cougar and 1yr plus kit while out hunting bunnies near Newport in the early 80's. When I reported it to the MNR they said it would be too difficult to follow in the snow....WTF !!! We tracked them for a mile or so and returned to hunting rabbits. When we came across a beaten down area covered in rabbit and squirrel hair we started looking in the trees for rabbits....I've been fortunate to see several cougars and kits since moving to BC in 91. Strange though, is the kit back east was spotted. None that I've seen here have that characteristic.

I spent many summers on Manitoulin Island growing up and did a LOT of wondering through the forests...never saw any cats, let alone a a Cougar....Some years back the local paper there was offering a $500 reward to anyone who could provide positive proof of a Cougar on the Island. Nice capture!

White Tail Cougar High Bred.
Very Fast with a sharp sense of smell.
No Doubt in my mind.
But it does look like the cougar genes were dominant.
