In May I ventured up the Gold Rush Trail to Barkerville. Thought these pics of the old timers were pretty cool.

I wonder if they used interbonds or TSX's? Because you can't kill moose and bears with just any old bullet.

Great pic's! I've singled these two out as I believe I know a little about them. I think the woman & man are Mr. & Mrs. Wendle, Joe & Betty, of Barkerville. She was well known for hunting grizzly, using a .22 Savage High Power. We lived in Barkerville for a few months in 1955, prior to moving to Wells. Being in their house on a number of occasions, I recall Bear hides hanging on the wall of the stairway going upstairs.
The guy with snowshoes, I believe is at Bowron Lake on the high bank on the north end of the lake and looking south. I can't remember who he may be but I believe he was the person that built the lodge that is still there. Close to where my sister & I have a cabin.
Enjoy your trip.

Seems like everything was bigger and better back then, even people seemed to be tougher than today. Everyone had a lever gun. Thanks for sharing!

Is it possible that could be Ernie Holmes?(guy with the snowshoes) Reason I ask is we bought a trailer from him in Ollala years ago--I spent several enjoyable hours talking with him about his days as warden in bowron game preserve--he trapped beaver for relocation and re estabishment all over BC and Canada--even trapped a pair that were relocated too Stanley park--course the vancouverites didn't appreciate the beavers work on thier beloved trees and poor Ernie had to relocate them somewhere else--he is mentioned also in the book "Blackwater River" by William Hillen. That would be very cool if it was Ernie.

Obviously from the picture, that's when women were women. Shot that big ole bear and never even tilted her hat.

It could well be. I've seen that photo somewhere else and it may have been in a book on the area "And So That's How It Happened" by W.M. Hong or a similar book on the area by my cousin Vince Halverson. I'll do some digging and let you know.

The size of the log behind that buck always gets my attention in the lobby of Barkerville.

I wonder if that was a local picture?

Possible I guess. There are a few spots where there is some good sized cedar, and I'm thinking of around the Cariboo River, but in the time I've spent in the area, I've never seen anything close to that size.
