Congratulations on your buck!! Can't see any pic, I don't understand why they make it so difficult to post pics on this forum, it should be as simple as take a pic on your phone, be signed in to HBC on your account, type a lovely storey and attach a photo!! We have the technology to provide this, maybe it's really expensive to make it simple!?!? But I've found HBC to be the biggest pain to post a pic, I bet more guys n gals would post a pic and storey if it was easier, when I posted up my 2016 Bull Moose it took a good chunck of time, email photos off phone or upload pics off phone onto computer, sign into photo bucket, save picture out of email to comp, pull over into photobuck, sign in HBC, type your storey and finally get to share! Lol just doesn't make since sorry for tha rant!! Lol

So we got into our spot a bit later than we normally would have but we figure if the rut is on and the bucks are pushing does around then it really wouldn't make much difference. the wind told me I would be hunting my spot from the north end and hunt south. i said good luck to my buddy who was heading a couple kms away. We figured we would meet up at the end of the day or he may give me a shout on the truck radio to see what is happening etc..(i had the portable and he would have the truck radio if/when he got back to the truck). The blowdown was pushing me more west than I wanted but I had no choice unless I had a chainsaw to cut through it. Tracks were everywhere but the snow was a couple days old. I did see some fresh tracks that looked decent size. I rounded back around the south end of the timber patch, staying just inside the timber. Just outside the patch was a clearing about 130 meters wide then back into the timber/blowdown again. I figured i would sit just inside my timber patch and watch for a bit and maybe try to call a bit. (The previous weekend I did try rattling but had no luck, I had just spooked a small WT buck and pulled out the antlers and rattled a bit to see if he would come back but no luck-so i left them at home this trip-keep in mind I am new to rattling or calling deer). I had just ditched my Kiafru and set it beside me as I sat down, I had a quick glance around to see if I could see anything out in the small clearing. I caught glimpse of some movement behind a lone 20' pine but I was sure I saw antlers. I slid the pack in front of me and laid my rifle on it for a rest. When the buck cleared the pine he had his nose to the ground, I touched off a round, hitting his left side base of neck. He dropped there. Shot was around 90 yds. I was pretty pumped to say the least.
I started the process of cutting him up trying to recall what I needed to leave on him for packing out. Hey buddy you on here?" my radio cracked with my buddies voice, (scaring the shit out of me as I wasn't expecting it). "Yup, go ahead" " See anything?" he said..."just one buck and I'm cutting him up now, just have one more tenderloin to pull off" I replied. " Thats awesome man, way to go! good size?" he said "umm yeah hes a decent meat buck" I replied (have to have a little fun! lol). My buddy then offered to make his way up with the truck and bring the pelican sled out to drag the deer back to the truck with. when he arrived I had the meat ready to go and my gear collected. He was pretty happy when he saw the buck and we had some high 5's and he gave me the gears about the "decent meat buck" comment. He hit the timber to continue hunting and I started the meat haul back to the truck....with a grin on my face.
We have hunted this spot together quite a bit the last few years and have had our shares of ups and downs in this place, but we always have a great time and never know what the day will bring.

Cheers, Rob

In hind sight I figure If i didn't decide to sit and watch for a bit there would have been a really good chance I would have hit his timber patch while he was still in it, and definitely increasing my chances of spooking him.
