I had the privilege of being invited on a 2 week trip with my best buddy, his uncle and his uncles friend to a spot the uncle had been hunting for 15 years for the last week of any buck. Saw tons of deer, easily 400 does and a number of bucks. On day 2 I missed a shot on a nice 4 point who had gathered 6 does with him. That afternoon at 1:30 my buddy shot a nice 2 point 150 yards from where I missed. it was special for him because he had been road hunting with his 1 year old daughter when he shot it and so now that skull cap and antlers are hanging above her crib as a nice memory for her.

Next day I was hiking nearby where I missed the 4 point, it was 20 minutes after first light but I wasn't paying attention to what was going on around me I was just focused on getting to where I wanted to be. Suddenly ahead and slightly left I heard a thud. I looked up and 20 yards away was a doe trying to figure out what I was. I slowly glassed around her to see if a buck was nearby. We stood looking at each other for a couple minutes when from behind and to my right up a bit on the hill I hear another thud. I slowly turn around and it's another doe 20 yards away. Holy crap I'm in the middle of a group of deer.

I very slowly started glassing the second doe when over the top of the hill behind her comes another deer. I glass the newcomer and see antler! He's about 40 yards away and has stopped walking as he's seen me. He hasn't winded me but he's unsure so he turns and walks right to left up hill, I aim for his far right shoulder as he's slightly quartered away and squeeze the trigger. BOOM! I send a 168 gr. TTSX his way and for a split second I only see the flash from my muzzle in the scope.

After I shot the buck had run 20 yards or so up and over the top of the hill. I kept my rifle up just in case and I saw his head suddenly rear up from behind some logs at the crest of the hill and then abruptly fall. Buck down! I picked up my spent shell and took a few deep breaths and calmed my mind, taking a moment to breathe in the cold mountain air and look out over the valley below. I waited 10 or so minutes before hiking up the hill to look for my buck.

It took about 5 minutes to find him, this was my first look:

And after I was finished gutting and before the drag out.

Very nice. Sometimes it, or I should say most of the time, it all happens very fast. Cheers.

Excellent! Things go just like that. When one knows he's in the right place, never forget to slow right down and do an awful lot of looking and not too much walking.

That's a great deer. Well done!
Hopefully you don't literally mean above the crib. A family member of mine just recently had to get stiches when his deer mount fell off the wall and gashed his head. After hearing that story I put a seismic cable onto my elk antler mount. Can't be too safe.

Yeah I was trying to be on alert since 3 bucks had been seen in that area recently. Obviously I could have been a bit more on alert given that I almost walked right past a doe lol.

Awesome area, the group of 4 who were hunting all tagged out on bucks and my buddy had a doe LEH for the next MU over so on Nov 1 he and I whipped out there and road hunted for a couple hours. On the way back to camp, we were whipping down the mainline in buddies truck, a little bit checked out mentally when I glanced up the bank and saw a nice doe about 50 yards up the mountainside from the road. He hit the brakes, hopped out, and a quick shot from his grandfathers Ruger #1 and the doe came rolling down the hill to us. Doesn't get much easier than that!

Another story from the trip, aside from my own deer I think this story will stick with me for a long time: I mentioned buddies uncles friend was along too. He just happens to have terminal brain and lung cancer, a year and a half ago doctors gave him 6 months so he's living everyday as if it's his last. Anyways one really rainy day instead of driving his quad he decided to take his truck. It was agreed that I would go with him as chemo has really sapped his strength. We had a great time chatting and looking for deer although the rain made things a bit slow. At around noon we checked one last spot before heading back to camp. I was looking up a steep hill beside the road when in the timber I saw a doe. We stopped, Walt started glassing when another deer stepped from behind a tree. I thought it was a doe but Walt spotted bone. He's a bit forgetful (chemo brain) so I tapped his arm and said "Walt, step out and shoot!" He hopped out, loaded his rifle and BANG! Clean shot through the neck, buck down!

Its very likely that that this was the last buck that this man will ever shoot so i feel very honoured to be there to help him gut and drag this deer out of the bush. Before we got to work we shared a drink from his flask and sat next to the buck in silence for a few minutes. I sure do hope he makes it back to camp next year.

That's a great way of putting it. He's nothing but positive despite losing his wife a couple years ago to the same disease. He's just enjoying life as much as he can right now.
