Just curious before i start looking around what sort of price should it cost to have a skull cleaned? I just want to have a rough ballpark, would be looking to have the meat cleaned off and skull bleached, i could do a plaque on my own, i live in an apartment otherwise I'd do it myself.

My friend lives in an apartment, he boiled the deer skull on his patio, went to a car wash for $15. Washed the skull then bleached it himself.
He sent me pics of the process, just laughed and laughed. But he's a student and every dollar counts. :)

Don't pay for something you can easily do yourself. A little time and patience will get you there.

How long do people usually bleach their skulls for one day... a night?

russm

Does the boiling part of the process stink quite a bit, if not i could probably get away with doing it myself, the car wash is only 5 mins away, im sure they'd appreciate brains and such in their parking lot lol

Carve off all the hair and it will smell the same as any other meat/bone boil combo ... your neighbors will prob think you're making soup :)

I bleach a cat skull my nephews found for a week or so and it was really brittle afterwards.

Grab your coleman camp stove and stock pot and head outside to the parking lot. Might look abit odd but your will have all the kids gathering asking questions. No point paying as the process is simple.
Remember not to boil but rather simmer...remove brains first using bucket and air hose from car washh.

I charge friends $80 for bear and deer and $100 for any large game and it's finshed work minus the plaque.

Don't over boil or you'll have to glue some teeth back in. 20-25 minutes with some Dawn is enough. Pressure wash...then cover with strong peroxide solution for a couple days. People use the term 'bleach' but don't actually use bleach. You can use paper towel to wick the solution over the highest part of the skull ( completely submerge if its just a skull without antlers). Keep antlers out of the solution.

Dont use bleach. Use peroxide. You can get the strong stuff at a hydroponics store. They call it 30%. Boil using laundry soap or sodium carbonate. Pick clean. Degrease skull after boiling and cleaning with white gas. If the teeth are loose. Pull the and glue them in with Krazy glue at this time. Go to a local gym equipment store and by some of the chalk (magnesium carbonate) used for weight lifting and climbing. Grind it up and make a paste with the peroxide. Wear gloves. Apply the paste to the skull and let sit for a day. Protect the antlers. I used Saran Wrap. Wipe off dry paste and rinse and let dry. Apply again if you want it more white. Took me 2 days. Once all done a week later after full drying I sprayed it with clear krylon. Google Simpson taxidermy. The full process is in there.

Simmer the scull with dish detergent.
Then pressure wash meat away. Repeat until clean.
Then go to the hydroponic store and buy 30% peroxide.
Place scull in peroxide (Do not put antlers in) over night.
Then blow dry with your lady's blowdryer and its done.

Or get the peroxide from any hair supply shop
"Volume 40" $10 bottle well last for a few heads.
I paint it on, wrap the skull in plastic wrap, and put it in front of a heater for a hour. Works great.

if its dried out, soak it for a few hours or over night in water before trying a pressure water. it'll save you time and money.

Thanks for the replies, i ended skinning it out on my patio after itd sat in the back of mu truck for a week or so ( no deep freeze and been feeling really lazy lately), so now that I've gone and gotten that out of the way i may as well go ahead and finish the job.

After i skinned it it went back into the back of my truck so imagine the meat should come off pretty easy with boiling lol, i have a couple more questions though.

1:do the teeth typically get left in or is it more a personal preference thing?

2: I cant decide if i like the look of a plaque or not, i was thinking if i did go with a plaque instead of a nice finished piece of wood i would i would take a round off of a log and use that for a rougher looking plaque, opinions?

in the future I definitely won't be leaving it so long before i get to it, the stink coming off of it was crazy lol, on a side note though the havalon knives with the skinny blades work awesome for doing around the eyes and lips.

I like skull hookers for display as you can change the angle.
Not exactly cheap but handy to use

been doing them for few years here., usualy charge is 120 for deer and bears, buddies get a bit of a break

if your gonna do it yourself, personaly i wouldnt waste your time with hair garbage. most it is 12%.
go to a hydro shop and get the fulll 29%, strongest avail to publc, and it takes seconds to whiten them

yes teeth get left in, dawn soap works best, actualy has enzymes in it that eats greese. even with the meat off simmer it if you havent. need to remove greese from the bonz to

Turned out great.

They run around $2-300 here. After spending about 2 days on my own skinning, stripping, de-goring, boiling, picking, more boiling, picking scrubbing, then bleaching for a day - I would actually do it again. I used one of those 'TanneryInc.' kits that run about $60, and it worked well enough to get the bulk of meat/sludge off, but I still needed to re-boil, scrap, and work on the brain. I didn't use any sort of pressure washer (wish I had now!), but the whole experience for a first-time deer kill for me was important and very meaningful. I just need to glue some small nose pieces that came loose and find the perfect piece of wood from our property to mount him to, but otherwise, I am pretty stoked that I shot, gutted, skinned, and butchered him almost all by myself (he was a bit chunky, so I needed lifting help to hang).

NOTE: I did mine on the kitchen stove, and it didn't smell as bad as I thought. More like stock cooking :)

We also don't have a lot of money kicking around. I though this would be a good test, and help me preserve my very first deer.

I do not boil my skulls. I bring them up to the start of a boil and then just let them sit in the hot water with Oxy-Brite detergent.. couple hours later down to the coin op car wash..

Some more picking. Then wrap them in paper towel and mist with Walmart peroxide, to keep them wet for about 3 or 4 days.

I've done my own, and had my taxidermist do them. I would choose my taxidermist, hands down. His product is incredible. Even the nasal trabeculae are preserved. Plus, I don't have the spare time to mess with skulls anymore.

I used to work for a hydroponic manufacturer out in abby, if you get the hydrogen peroxide on your skin it instantly goes white, i thought i was done with that stuff lol.

any hydroponic shop, its used to clean water lines or disease in soils
29% is the strongest up here avail to public. 35 in usa i believe
its a tech grade so stronger than reg crap in a reg store, the other str9ongest is that volume 40 hair stuff, its 12%, if you want it like a paste like hair goo, ad geleatin to it. i dont bother. i just brush it on and their white within a few min. put infront of a small heater (warm) and even nicer job

You have to be real careful with using 50% HP. There is a story on the net somewhere where a guy in the states got a 45 gallon barrel for cheap and decided to use it for some buffalo skulls. I guess he was using some metal hooks to move the skulls around and a flake of rust fell off into the pot. A while later his wife calls him and says the pot is boiling in the backyard even though there was no external heat source. I guess it looked like a witches caldron:):) He called the fire department and they cleared out the neighborhood:):) I guess lesson learned the hardway. For those that don't know hydrogen peroxide of something like 80% is used as the fuel to launch the space shuttles.

h202 is an oxidizer. water with an extra oxygen molecule.as it eats or whitens, its loses that extra molecule and turns back to water.
been using same liter for couple years now

with that higher % stuff heat can cause some issues, carefull..lol
