Hunted in 8-12 this week with a 4 point Mulie and any Whitetail buck being the focus. We had no luck on either count however, we did manage to get our paws on a Wolf.

How it happened:
I was sitting on a little knoll, glassing the far tree line looking for bedded deer, when I heard a bit of a crash from the area I was picking apart. I thought I could see a deer bouncing away but wasn't sure. Shortly after, I caught movement coming out of the trees and my first thought was Whitetail, as the body colour wasn't the fall grey of the Mulie does we had been seeing. What a surprise when I realized I was looking at two Wolves moving at a trot, into the open, and making their way directly across the cut from me. One slowed a bit and I managed, from a sitting position, to send 168 grains of Barnes .30 cal into the vitals. We ranged the shot after the fact at about 150 yards. Before anybody comments, the reason I didn't shoot the second was because I couldn't get my shyte together quickly enough. It happened fast.
Happy hunters:

Not to hijack your thread but ran into a rancher in 3-28 the other day. He had a dead male he had trapped & shot. He said he has trapped 7 or 8 in the past several months. He is trapping as allowed as they are killing his cattle. Lots of others around he says.

I'm having it tanned and will probably tack it to the wall some place. I'd also like to find some beetles for the skull. It would be cool to put on a bookcase or something.

It is very rare that you get to poke the second one unless you catch them flat out in the middle of a tree devoid expanse. So, good shot, 50% is a good score.
Male or female?

well done, another breeder out of the pool
If it was the Alpha female, then another female will move up. If it was not the Alpha female , then it will have no bearing on the breeding.

If it was the Alpha female, then another female will move up. If it was not the Alpha female , then it will have no bearing on the breeding.Good point. I should stop thinking about wolves like they breed several bitches and remember that they are pack animals and raise one litter per year. Thanks for the reminder. ;-)

If it was the Alpha female, then another female will move up. If it was not the Alpha female , then it will have no bearing on the breeding.Let's just say that they were a solitary pair. Then she was the alpha female and her breeding days are over, yes? Then it was a good score.
