So I had a pretty cool afternoon! Got off work at about 3:00 and texted my wife that I wanted to take my son out for the afternoon. For only the second time ever, she asked if we could go as a family. I headed home, helped my son with his paper route and hit the hills for an hour before dark. The plan was to try to find my son a mulie as a youth hunter. Any white tail or 4 pt Mulie, I would shoot, as our freezer was getting empty. My son spotted a few mulie does just before dark and as I was glassing them, I saw another doe moving about 20 yards behind. This one was a whitetail and a second followed. 2 minutes later a small white tail buck moves in tailing the does. As I grab and load my gun from the truck, the buck moves out of sight.

I head towards where I last saw the buck and spook him into a stand of aspen. I settle in and see the body at about 50 yards but can't confirm that it was the buck because of the branches. The deer moves into the open at about 75 yards, confirm it was the buck and take the shot. Grab my son and trail the deer for about 75 yards and find him piled up. A small basket 4 point on one side and a heavy spike on the other.

5 minutes later and it would have been too dark!

I must say that I don't love road hunting, but this will be one of my most memorable hunts because I had my whole family with me!

Daughter held one leg, son held another, and my wife held the flashlight as I gutted the deer. Doesn't get much better than that.

Picture to follow.

Congratulations! Yes, it's something very special when the whole family is there
and helps with 'getting it done'. Many years ago now, I took my family along the
same as you, the kids as soon as they could confidently walk, and they always
participated in 'getting it done' with enthusiasm.

This should make some great "table talk" when the family's all sitting around the table for supper and it's a incredible WT roast coming out of the oven that you all had a hand in getting!!! Congrats to the whole family!
