So... not much of a deer hunter. When do they start, how long does it last?

I'd say anytime after October 25th you could bump into a larger buck that has moved into the Valley. Unfortunately they will do most of their moving at night until mid to late November.

Ive shot a lot of mule deer in alberta, most didn't start to rut until around Remembrance day

For what it's worth I had a big increase of trail cam pictures showing bucks from Nov. 16-22 last season.

where the Ministry is concerned about the over harvest of mature bucks during the rut they typically shut down hunting for 4 points and better Nov 10th to Nov 20th. That should give you the big picture of what they think is the heaviest rut times.
