My first attempt at a story so bear with me
My dad and I had a bull draw around PG.
we woke up early, grabbed a coffee and headed out to our spot, we had to 4x4 in and then we parked the jeep and started walking, just enough light to see our feet. We came to the fork in the road my dad went right and I went left. I crossed over a swampy creek ( never thought anything of it at the time) there was an old log pile I climbed up on and got comfortable.
about ten minutes goes by and I hear my dad let out the first call, it's just starting to get light and I can see about 50 yards in front and 150-200 yards behind me. The logging slash was maybe 10 years old, the pine trees were 8-10 feet high but spaced enough to see pretty good. An hour goes by, pretty quiet except for a few squirrels running around. Another hour and now I'm getting bored( my patience while sitting is pretty low but getting better) I text my dad as we had spotty cell coverage, I said lets get out of here I haven't heard a thing...
A few minutes and I get a text back, a few more calls;). So here I am, sun is up and is nice and warm, I'm half asleep and thinking about the plans for the rest of the day. 10 minutes from the last text and I hear a weird sound. It wasn't the typical deep moose grunt, but kind of a higher pitched noise. I start looking around wondering if it's a crow or what the heck.
Then an I see the bone trotting through the trees! Holy crap that's a moose and he's heading right at me. I grab my gun and as I put it up my adrenaline is through the roof and I breath all over my scope, can't see a thing. Mr moose stops 15 yards in front of me with one 8 foot pine tree seperating us, he's barking up a storm and looking for the cow that was 600 yards behind me( my dad) so here I am, big bull moose at arms reach, I slowly drop the gun and pull my shirt out and clean my scope as slowly and quietly as I can, while doing this he takes 4 steps and is now 10 yards in front of me broadside. I guess 3.5x zoom wasn't enough at 10 yards and for some odd reason, wanted more so I turned it what I thought was a little bit. Not so much.
I put the gun up, all I see is hair, holy man he is close I'm thinking to myself, I find his leg follow it up go a hair behind the shoulder and let her fly. The gun jumps and the bull takes off, ohhhh noo I missed! I'm thinking to myself, I let out a quick call with one hand and I see him stop, all I can see is antlers. I'm thinking how the hell did I miss, I could of jumped on his back he was so close. Then I hear the sounds, he's coughing and sputtering, it felt like an eternity but was probably only a minute and i see him tip over.
I grab my phone and text dad "got one" is all I say as he starts to hike over to me. Once he shows up we go and find him about 25 yards from where I shot him.
Now back to that creek I crossed, my dad is waiting for a hip so we need to get the jeep to this guy, half hour later with a chain saw and we have a makeshift bridge built, I put her in 4 low lockers in and inch my way accross the logs, thinking that wasn't bad. But we still need to load the moose up and get back.
we bone him out, load him into game bags and load the jeep with the moose, back slowly accross the creek out to the highway and home by 1:30 pm. What a rush!
