I know I haven't been on here in a very long time sorry for that but I had just about given up on hunting. I tried anything and everything to get a deer year after year without any success. i thought I was cursed or something as I was up at dawn and out till dusk here there and everywhere. Drive, walk, sit and wait but nothing.
Well I guess all the stars came into alignment today. I decided to plan one trip for the month of October just for the heck of it to at least get out there for a campfire with my brother. We contemplated on Friday whether to even go as the weather in the valley was getting brutal and power was out everywhere but we hit the road anyways. Got on the highway and had huge wind, rain, and snow to get through but finally pulled into our spot around 10:30pm. It was still pissing rain and howling like crazy so we decided to climb into our little trailers for the night. My bro yelled over to me "when you wanna get up" I responded "lets see how the rain goes and sleep in this trip".
Well up at 8:30 and on the road at 9am heading to the first cut we could find. We were bombing along not even paying attention to what we were doing and we hit a switchback around a cut block. I spoke up and said " Hey we should probably at least stop a minute and glass this block. My bro looks at me "Ya that's probably a good idea lol". So he grabs his bino's and does a quick scan and says "Hey I think I see a big ole white ass down there". I grab my bino's and take a look and responded "it sure is and it's a buck dude" We both leap out of the Jeep and I said to him "that's about 300 yards I can't do that shot let's go up the hill around that clump of slash and see if we can get above him".
We get around the slash pile and sure enough he is now about 200 yards. I figure what the heck I will try. Well now the adrenaline is pumping and I can't hold still. I took a shot but missed. Second shot and he kicks his rear legs up in the air. I yell out " I think I hit him in the back hip man". The buck limps a few feet forward and stops. My bro say's "get another one into him". Well I can barely stand at this point as this is all starting to dawn on me we might actually have a buck down here in a moment. My bro and I keep bantering back and forth as I keep trying to find a good tree or stump or something to lean against to help me. My bro just keeps saying "just shoot him man" like he has done this a thousand times and it's just that easy.
Well luck would have it this buck just isn't going anywhere and gave me enough time to find a tree, calm down, and take one final shot. Boom and I hear bro yell out "he dropped". I just looked up at the sky said my thank you and started to survey what to do next while trying to calm myself down. Luckily it was a switchback so I knew the road was above and below this block so I told my bro to head down to the lower part of the road and I will flag him where to stop. I hoofed it down to the Deer and marked a tree I could see to get back to him. I walked down farther to flag my brother and told him what i needed before he headed up. He being a total trooper today by the way climbed the hillside with gear in tow to deal with this Deer.
Now we are no spring chickens so I told him take his time cause this might take and hour or two to get wrapped up. So just as we were about to get started I looked at him and said "man I can't remember how to do this from the dozens of videos I watched in the past. So I just dove in and did the best I could and think I was pretty successful as it all came out in a big sploosh if you will and we flipped him over to start dragging him out. Well he was heavy as hell 209lbs to be exact from the butchers scale so it took us many micro breaks to drag this beast down to the jeep, all our mite to get it up on the back rack, and back to camp to load into my truck.
And here he is on the back rack. I will try to get more photo's added soon.
