After a year and a half of hunting, bumping beds, and seeing nothing many times, I finally got my first deer yesterday. I feel very happy lol.

That's one hell of a first deer. It took me years to get my first 4 point. Way to go

The story:
Got to our area at about 5:45 am, hiked up a hill about 500 yards from the road. Spotted him at about 6:10 across the way as soon as we got to our spot. It was still too dark to shoot so we waited him out. He stared at us for awhile and then went back to feeding. We kept our eyes on him and maybe strayed about 30 yards. Once we had enough light, about 6:45 we made a move to the next ridge for a closer shot. By 7 a.m. the job was done.
Since it was my first deer my buddy decided that as initiation I had to pack him back to the truck all on my own, which is fair I suppose. Got 'er done but man was I sore this morning. Either way he's at the butcher now and we had tenderloin for dinner tonight.

Side note: Funny story about that vest I'm wearing. My Grandfather was an avid hunter, and I was too young to be interested. He passed a couple of years back and I really felt like I missed out on a lot of quality time and learning. 2 weeks ago my Grandma gave me his old "lucky hunting vest." Said he brought something home every time he wore it. I put it on for this hunt, for the first time, and I swear on my Mother's grave, a shooting star went by a couple of minutes before I shot. I made a wish and here we are now. I can't help but feel he gifted me that deer.

Great story and congrats on a beauty buck! Cheers to the first of many harvests I hope.
Curious as to why the long wait to shoot, should have been legal light by around 6:10? Mind you it worked so what the heck, great job.

Curious as to why the long wait to shoot, should have been legal light by around 6:10? Mind you it worked so what the heck, great job.

Legal light was at 6:14. I wasn't confident enough until it was lighter. My scope is pretty cheap. I learned a lot about optics since I started. This year I started with Vortex binoculars and noticed a huge difference from last year's cheap binos. Now I need to upgrade my scope. I could see him through the binos, but the scope wasn't quite clear enough. I'm terribly afraid to do something wrong because I was impatient, so I waited to make sure. All things being equal, it would have been me that was gutted if he got away, but it was a risk I took and in the end I'm glad I did.

Ah gotcha, legal shooting here was 6:12 today region 4 though. Good choice I guess with the optics and all. Wasn't trying to be negative at all, just that as bucks/bulls get on in age they usually won't stick around that long if they've made ya;)
Again nice work!

no hard feelings. I'm tellin' ya this guy stared at us what felt like forever, and then just went back to eating. He had a good amount of fat so maybe he was a lazy ******* lol.

You know I think that's exactly what happened and we talked about it before the hunt but probably didn't even realize it when we were sitting there like mannequins lol.

That's an awesome first deer! Four pointers are not the easiest to come by. I know,,,,I've spent a few Septembers trying to find one and usually come up empty handed. This September I had to settle for a WT buck,,,,better eating anyway. LOL

You should start renting out that vest!

Congradulations on your first deer and a nice one to. I really like the story behind your hunting vest. May you wear it on every hunt and think of your grandpa and get yourself another fine animal.
Maybe one day in the future if you have any children then you to can pass the vest down to them.

Great story. Congrats to you and may you have many more memories. Oh, and enjoy your dinner from your own deer, hunted and packed by you, for the enjoyment of you, your family and your friends. Buying a steak at the supermarket just can't compare the power of the age-old magic.

I'd bet your buddy made up the part about carrying out your first Buck! But hey, your the better man for doing it! And that's a dam fine 4 point no matter what number it is! Jeez, sure hope your with this same guy when he gets his first moose, on the far side of a stink'in swamp! And it might be a good idea to keep that vest under lock and key until your next hunt'in trip for sure!
