Got our allotted 2 group moose this week. Buddy shot a smaller one early in the week and I downed this larger bull on Friday. Thursday night the rains were pouring and at our 4am wake up it was still coming, so we hit snooze until 6. The other guy in the draw and I were a little more enthusiastic about getting out so we left 15 min ahead of the coffee sippers and when we pulled up to the clearing there was a nice cow staring at us from 400 yards off. I strolled back to the quad and got my seat and a coffee and prepared to settle in. Right around then the others pulled up in the side x side and came down for a look. The cow stood there for another 5 min or so and started to wander off. I didn't want her going too far too fast so I thru out a little cow moan. She immediately stopped and looked and within a split second the bull stepped out of the willows to join her. With my first bull out in a clearing and my hunting partners watching the action I leveled my old BSA 30-06 at him (with the help of a tree-pod), put the 400 yard dot over his shoulder (Leupold LR reticle was excellent), and let one fly. It was quite satisfying to hear the whizz of the 180g partition leave my position on the ridge, only to be followed up by a tremendous THWAP! The big bull lingered for a few seconds and started walk towards the waiting cow. We didn't want him to wander far so an follow up shot was volleyed out and the bull went down. Both lung shots thru and thru, but there was some liver damage also....
That was it; my first moose and my longest shot to date. Not a bad bull to finally cut my tag.
