Last year i lost all my meat because my freezer crapped out. so i shot the first buck i saw. My hunt was over in 20 minutes. This was special because i took my 7 year old daughter on her first hunting experience. We left friday night up to region 8 and spent the night in the new f150. we woke up and headed up the road to the clerarcut. there he was with 3 other does. My daughter helped me drag it out. It was a great time.

100 yards, 130gr Berger VLD from a 270WSM. Bang flop.
100lbs on the hook

first animal taken with this rifle, and first animal taken with the VLD. Very impressed by both. I had heard there might be a lot of meat loss. It wasnt the case. I have had more blood shot "jelly" from SST and Sierra game king in the same caliber and weight. A fist sized spot on entry, no damage to the other side at all. Deer jumped up and turned to run, fell over as soon as he landed.
Ive seen a number of "non shooters" in early season, and this guy seemed to have decent body mass. I spotted a Doe beside him, actually thought he was a fallen tree or large rock. Put the binos up.. "hey wait a sec"...
my earliest deer to date.

After years of letting small bucks walk (even a few 4 pointers) in search of Mr. Big, I had a really bad case of Nagginwifeitus. Needless to say I was given the ultimatum of bringing home the next buck I encountered. Found this guy with two does. Bang flopped him at 49 yards. Broke his spine, that is why his "as they lay" picture looks funny. So, here's my story... First year hunting, was going to take my son out with me as he's got eyes like an eagle and spots twice as many deer as I can, but alas 5:30am rolls around and he's snoring in bed so I decide to go solo. Loaded up the truck and head out to the spot I surveyed the evening before and found loaded with fresh tracks. Arrived at the spot 6:20am right at first light, Just as I stepped out of the truck I saw him 150 yards across the cutblock as the fog was lifting. Took a standing shot and saw him jump followed by a loud crashing and thrashing as he tumbled another 20 yards down a small slope. I walked across the block, found him as seen below, and then realized it's a damn long way back to the truck. Really wishing that the kid came along, I began the long drag back to the road. Finally nearly an hour and a half later, brought him home.

I got this guy at sundown back on Sept 20. Spotted him his white ass 570 yards across a field. I looked at him for a bit with my 10x binos, but at that distance I couldn't tell how many points he had. So I took out the rifle and got steady, cranked out up the magnification to 24x. He finally turned his head sideways, and sure as enough he was a 4 point. So now that I have a shooter, I also have a problem. As I recently rebarreled my rifle, I dont have any dope past 400y. So with light starting to fade, I had to close 170y across a open field. Luckily there was some undulation to the ground, so i was able to to it with out being noticed. I set my bipod up on a slight mound, adjusted for elevation and wind, took my point of aim. Pulled the trigger and mid recoil impulse I saw him drop where he stood. By the time I hiked back to the truck and got to him it was dark, so not alot of pictures. Turns out he was a 5x5, each side having a crab claw.

I would like to say I was looking for a big trophy sized buck, but really he was the first legal buck I had seen.

Hunted with my boys (10 & 12) around the Forest Grove area this weekend...didn't see any bucks. Drove back to the Lower Mainland and my father-in-law told us that 2 hours after we left a buck and 2 does walked right through the yard of the cabin we were staying in...sigh...that would have been handy.

My hunting season had a frustrating start due to mechanical issues and inches of snow hampering our Fort Nelson area moose hunt. We returned home without a single shot fired, and to make matters worse, I'd blown my remaining vacation time.

Still, I managed to scrape up one more day, so I made the four hour drive to my favourite place in region 3, not far from where I grew up.

At 6am dad and i snuck into our area and set up at likely places. Within an hour I glassed a group of mulies coming up from a field below, but lost them as they went behind a rise. Experience in that area told me that they'd be heading my way, but after waiting for about half an hour I began to loose confidence. I decided to move and circled to the north, in case they headed that way. As I came over a little ridge, I caught sight of a white ass, and through my binoculars saw four animals.

I was unsure if there were any bucks with them, but I did know they were moving towards where dad was set up. They paused to start grazing in an area with lots of downed pines, and I knew that dad would be able to see them, but through trees. I slowly closed distance to about 180 yards, keeping in cover and glassing. Finally I confirmed that there was a buck in the group of seven does. He was only a two point, but we'd agreed to take the first legal animal we had a shot on.

I took off my pack, got prone, and waited for a good shot. At first a tree was blocking the vitals, but I had time. The buck cleared the tree, but had turned to face me. I considered a neck shot, but decided to wait it out. Finally he turned and offered me the broadside shot I wanted. The 300 mag put the bullet right where I'd aimed, and he dropped. The bullet took him just behind the shoulder and exited higher through the ribs on the other side, severing the arteries just above the heart. No wasted meat.

I know he's not big, but with one hunting day left in my season I'm relieved to have him hanging. He will be delicious.

They will not take it away. I've cut my tag and left my license on my pack. I gutted the animal and had to put my stuff back into my pack. I had nothing to clean my hands with, wiped them off the best I could but still got a bit of blood on my license when putting it back into my pack. CO tried to give me crap for having blood on my license a month or so later. Definitely nothing he could do

I cut my tag first, bone out animal. Check my tag again. Pack animal off mountain, unload animal, check my tag again!! Plenty of time to get blood on it after first cutting it. I would and have told anybody asking that blood on a tag represents a CAREFULL hunter. I also have my friends check my tags after as well. The heat of the moment [buck fever] causes mistakes. While checking my sons tag on a goat he took, I saw he had cut the tag under it as well. Wrote a note about the mistake, called a CO when in service, had tag checked by CO, blood on it as well!

Having blood on your tag does not indicate that you did not cut your tag before touching the animal. All this proves is that you touched your license with bloody hands.

And this is exactly what happened to me, in my first year of hunting in 2009...I shot a deer in Oct, got a little blood on my tag, and a month or so later, I went through a checkstop, and a CO gave me flack and said if I had the animal with blood on my tag going through the checkstop they would have confiscated my animal..

why was he looking at your license if you didnt have an animal?
this year:
I walked up to my deer, cut my tag and dropped all my gear. Gutted my animal, then realized I hadnt put my license back in my wallet. I had it sitting on my bag. When I put it away, I got blood on it. In the excitement of getting my first deer this year, I wanted to make sure I cut the correct species tag. I got blood on the license.

Don't know why he checked, but every time that I can remember going through a checkstop, they check both my hunting license and my PAL, so I'm assuming it's just their protocol..all that being said, I'm happy to see them anytime they're around..
