Not much of a story. I have a spot that I consistently I get my elk every year. On sept 2 I walked into my spot about 4 kms at first light. As soon as I got into my spot, I see a smaller 4x5 bull by him self about 700 yards away. So I started cow calling and sure enough he just came right in. all of a sudden he stopped about 250 yards but behind some thick brush and would not come any closer and I was thinking WTH??? He was all horned up and now he is stopping. Then all of a sudden I heard another bull scream and look to my right and about 300 yards on a grassy ridge I see about 20+ cows running to the timber this other bull was just herding them up. At this point they were about 100 yards for going into the deep dark bush, So I hammered on the bugle and he just screamed and charged toward me. At this point he was behind a few elk so I didn’t shoot. So I waited and he went back to herding the cows toward the timber. I saw a small opening where he would be and as soon as he walked through I cow called and he stopped broad side for a split sec. I shot and when I looked he was just slipping into the deep timber. I thought at first I missed. I walked up to where he was NO BLOOD. Thought how the hell did I miss?? Then I heard coughing and snuck into the timber and about 100 yard inside he was laying almost dead.
When I dressed him, I noticed that I got him behind the one shoulder which took out the lungs with a golf ball sized hole and totally smashed the right shoulder. I recovered my 250 grain sierra game king and it weighed 180 grains. I thought it held up good, especially because I am pushing them at 2940 fps from my 340 wbyJ
