Hiked a couple KM at first light into an area which had shown some good sign of elk activity. I seen fresh tracks on the trail so decided to stop and make a bugle. Seconds later I heard some crashing up ahead and a bull bugled back a couple hundred yards away. Nice throaty gravely scream. Oh yeah baby this is happening! I moved towards him slowly and set up when I had a decent shooting lane. He bugled again on his own and I gave him a half dozen cow calls, shitty ones I could barely call I was pretty jacked up. He bugles again, screaming.

A minute goes by, silence. Then I hear some crashing and spot movement ahead. A cow is coming right towards me on a pretty good clip, and the bull is hot on her tail. He screams again, and hes charging towards me. Crosshairs settle on his chest frontal and I take the shot with my 338-06, 210gr Barnes TTSX @ 2750 fps. WHAP I can hear the bullet impact and he staggers and lurches to my right and out of sight. Cow keeps trotting towards me and stops, looks around. It's dead quiet, no crashing, nothing. Cow turns and walks off out of sight and I slowly make my way up to where the bull was. I get about half way and he's standing there broadside looking right through me. One more shot behind the shoulder and he takes off, disappears out of sight shortly after. Again, silence. No crashing or gurgling. I wait 15 mins and head in downwind of where he was last seen. Piled up

we ate the heart that night, fed 7 of us and I even had a little leftover for snack the next day. Last night was tenderloin wrapped in bacon. This is the real trophy pic!

have hunted 8 days so far, hiked about 80km before I pulled the trigger. Had some great encounters but this was only the 4th elk I'd seen. Was glad to drop the hammer, now time to try and get another one with friends and family.

Amazing how how much those bulls can soak up... Would have thought with that gun it would have tipped over after the first shot.

looked like first one might of landed a bit high and into the neck, just grazed the bone I did the gutless method so never did dig around the chest cavity to see where it went. The follow up shot centered a rib and smashed a pretty big hole thru and thru broadside, lungs were mush

whats the 1st rifle in the series of pics?

Ruger no1 300 Win Mag stainless / laminate, packed it for most of the first week of season.

Here's my 338-06 with Vx3i 3.5-10x40, it's a Winchester Model 70 with a 23" Pacnor #1 contour in a McMillan Edge. Timney trigger and PT&G bottom metal. 3rd elk it's killed so far I really like it

Mark,
Coming from you it's the awesome thread I have been waiting patiently for.
We spoke on the phone shortly before you left and I knew then that I was in for a good thread on your return.
Thanks for posting, it's going to get a couple " re- reads " for sure.
One thing that interests me is the fact that you have relied on the 338-06 many times considering the variety of other toys available to you.
What can it be? Familiarity and comfort with one particular rifle knowing full well that it is capable ?

Again, Thanks TB.

hah. Was trimming up some meat for the burger bin and cut into this. In the neck somewhere, probably where it meets the body. Likely clipped a vertebrae in the neck and blew off a petal, 93% weight retention. Expanded diameter on the widest point is 2.2x original diameter

I got the 33806 built specifically for elk. I wanted more jam than my 338 Federal and the 210gr TTSX just screams ELK BULLET when I look at it. I like the cartridge, it's nothing magical but it's very effective. Took my first bull with it in 2012 using the 225gr Accubond, then switched to the TTSX 210gr the next year to pick up 150 fps and not give up any penetration. I am happy with how it works on game and accuracy is pretty nice too. It's a terrible situation to have too many hunting rifles, my No1 300wm hadn't been packed for a couple years until this fall. Wife gave it to me as a wedding gift and I like to pack it when she comes along on a trip. Maybe next year it will see some action :D
