Got a bear problem in my yard. Would someone please remind me how far I need to be from other residents homes to discharge a firearm? I recall 200 meters but there again, I recall a lot stuff these days that makes little sense.

Thx in advance.

look in the regs.they will tell you if your in an area that allows it.If not head to your nearest sporting goods store and pick up a bear banger kit.I lived in a rural area with bears and was not allowed for rifles/single projectiles but used bear bangers to good effect.
watch your garbage and fruit trees.IM still visited by bears here occasionally and still lauch the odd bear banger..

There are no local restrictions, but I thought there was a provincial or federal minimum distance?

Page 13 of the regs says unlawful to hunt or discharge with in 100 m of various things and one of them is a dwelling house which sounds like what your asking.

If in a rural area with zero restrictions and no nabours your good to go.If your on a provincial hyw I think you have to be 1/4 mil off the road tho.Remember a rifle round will travel long distances unobstructed incase of a miss.

I think highway rule is twenty meters.

What's the problem?

Trashing fruit trees, chasing pets and generally more threatening than one usually expects. Very big and full of vim. Figure I might as well eat my apples one way or another.

Buy a tag, observe the hundred meter rule, talk to the neighbours if around and load up some 000. Sounds like that bear is better off in pepperoni form.

Good luck

The basics here out of the regs. Page 13 covers it all.

(a) 15 m on either side of the middle of aroad with less than three lanes, or(b) 15 m from the edge of the pavedsurface of a highway with three lanes ormore, or(c) to the boundary of private or cultivatedland, whichever comes first.

The discharge of a firearm using a singleprojectile is prohibited within 400 m (1/4mile) on either side of the road allowance offollowing portions of the highways and roadsin British Columbia listed below:

Yeah, if you want him to die 800 yards away in the next property. I have an xbow, they don`t kill like a rifle. And by the way fire arms restrictions DO apply.

And being in Nelson you probably will have 200 hippies chanting and burning candles if they find out.

Its the same with a bow 100m from dwelling or out houses, & bows kill just a quick as a rifle if not quicker, shot placement is key.

I don't live in a "municipality", so can't comment there, but screw the 100m rule if you're being threatened by a bear. Obviously be aware of your surroundings and safe shooting lanes, but don't let a bold bear ruin your families safety.
What are you supposed to do if it finally decides to enter your house?

yep, that's about right. Just my luck that the bear will make his last run, crawl and bawl on my hippy neighbours lawn. Got to make it quick and on the spot.

No chance last night - already twilight when he arrived. Destroyed another apple tree last night - that's the fourth with eleven more to go. Interestingly, he has figured which are the best eating apples and taking those first.
