We should have a predator sticky thread. I miss PredatorHuntCanada. That was an awesome forum. Maybe there can be a contest for the most verified kills too. That would be even better. I guess one problem will be is that it was the boys and girls in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba that kept that thing interesting. Might die with just us BC'ers.

while camping in region 3 . Last week of august. I awoke to the sun beaming into the trailer. Time to get up and make coffee. Sat back down on the bed to wait for it to start purcolating, noticed movement in the camp across the road. A large male wolf pissing on the picnic table in the emtpy camp. I woke the kids and they got to watch a wolf . Close . Less than 50 yrds. Unafraid of people.... He stood there for about a minute then walked down the rd howling. I slipped out to get a pic bit he slipped out of range . Go figure a wolf in camp and unafraid of people. Just glad the kids got to see one . Wish it was open. So 1 week later we go camping west of 100 mile and we return from fishing the lake . Near dark and we hear a wolf howling along ways away. So i start mimicking its howls and he gets closer . And closer and this goes on for about and hr . Now its dark and been quiet , no calls being returned? Well bedtime. Wake up in the early morning to a wolf howling i slip out of the trailer and see it across the lk. The sun was just cresting and shinning right on it. I grab my binos from the trailer and notice movement in the field behind us . 2 more wolves sitting and looking at the wolf across the lk . My heart accelerates and my mind jumps to precise steps and location of all ammo rifle and tripod . Within a few quick quiet steps for the first time in my life i have cross hairs on a wolf . Had to calm my breathing then squeezed and smack. Heard the impact and watched it buckle. Wolf Down. Woohoo. My son comes bolting out . Dad whatcha shooting . A wolf . Cool . We make our way over . Small female. But heh one less mouth out there. 240 yrds.

I just got back from region 4 didn't get a elk but shot a wolf. Was walking along a motorized closed logging road, about 7km from the truck and came up to a clear cut with 4 or 5 wolves scrambling to the tree line. I swung my 7mm off my back and shot one just as it was about to enter the trees. In region 4 wolves need to be inspected so I took it to Cranbrook, was surprised to find out I was only the third wolf to be inspected this year.

Good work! I had a similar experience on Tuesday, but didn't get a shot before it reached the tree line.

Sooooo , had a morning like no other , headed to my new honey hole , caught a 4 pt buck hauling a#@ across the rd with a big black wolf on his hoofs, got out an listened, waiting for more wolves running across but none , tried a set in the area but the fog was low an the wind was kicking up so I moved to another spot , I was gonna hit later in the day , Got in an hear wolves howling in the distance , along ways away but its go time, I get set up an start howling and I am getting howls back but they are no closer . So I decide to move 200 yrds closer and to a better vantage point , its quiet , and low fog in the block . I howl some more and nothing . Time goes on and I wait patiently . I decide to flip on the FoxPro and am gonna do some coyote sequences that I came across . Start with female vocals , male challenge and pup distress , and run those about 10-15 seconds a piece , then after 5 mins shutdown an wait 10, no movement or howls , so fire them again an now I have movement along ways out , my first thought since I left it on pup distress was coyotes as all I saw was a light colored creature moving then 2 , binos up an then they came , the blacks and grey wolves . Coming from behind a slash pile. My adrenaline soars an they just keep coming more , and more, a total of 8 . Spread out in the block coming at me , In shock an aw of what is happening I am having a hard time focussing on 1 , but finally get the cross hairs on 1 and he stops @ 175 looking my direction . Go time . Drop it an start trying to get another but all the movement an spread out and distances they lope out of there. But I did just call in some wolves an got 1 . So F@CH YEA .

Lots of fresh wolf sign the past few scouting trips in 5-2, fresh lynx tracks also. Snow levels increasing making it harder unless you have a sled . Hope to do some thick timber cat sets. Get the hair on the neck going. Itsgrousetalk . Where you out of . I can tell you wolves are 70 mile had 3 , powerline (west side of hwy) more out west 100 mile , windy mtn rd not far out , did a tour from 70mile - 3400 rd to 3300rd to bridge lk , they were actively hauling joe ross rd . Lots of predator sign near hammer lk . But that was a few weeks ago. The ones out west were feeding on young wild horse, came across a recently devoured carcass. Missed that opportunity by about 1 week.

Are you sure? That looks a lot like a coyote. The nose is so tapered. I could be convinced either way, photos are always misleading. But I have had some difficulty myself, and I have killed 10 wolves in my hunting career (I have 6 hides taxidermied). What do you use to determine what is a coyote and what is a wolf?

In the last picture to me it seems to have smaller ears in relation to its head than that of a coyote, which I've found are quite pronounced( 1/3 of head length vs maybe 3/4). The snout, while looking tapered thanks to the camera angle, it appears it is still quite stout, thick if you will with a rather large "pad". Just what im seeing. Everything screams wolf to me, they can be tricky for sure, esp once you start getting juveniles and such, but it comes pretty clear when they're side by each. In the flesh, well watching the gut piles out the edge of dads fields ive found they're like looking at grizzlys and black bears, if your guessing it's not a grizzly.

I guess its because I have killed more wolves than coyotes! Probably only shot about 3 or 4 coyotes in my life. However, I did see a wolf (no doubt about that one, black and very long!) on the second to last day of the deer season here, and so, I intend to try for wolves (or coyotes) in January, we shall see how that goes...

I thought it looked like a wolf too. Smaller ears in relation to head, eyes slanted.

Just an all around evil looking wolf. :)
