What's you average boned out weight for the usual fly-in species (stones, goats, caribou, elk, moose)? I know every animal is different but what would be the rough numbers you'd give each animal? Only my second year in BC - first year doing a fly-in so I am kind of curious...

Thanks!!

A big northern moose will go 5-600lbs with the rack. We got a medium/small one last year and figured it was about 350 boned out, with the rack.

A caribou, deboned, caped, with antlers, I figure 120ish lbs of packing hell!!!

Thanks guys! For anyone interested, I came across a chart in the Alaska Hunting regs that shows the top end of boned out weight for each animal according to them - gives a good rough idea

The boned out weight for elk is over 100lbs heavier than the average bull from the east kootenays. 5 of the last 6 bulls I shot weighed 420-460 for 4 quarters. This is bulls that went in the truck whole so the weights included all bone

our last moose was 629 lbs bone in on the hook,
I think it will be hard to give an average because of how much the size of these animals can differ.

Bone in, a mature bull elk can be in the 500 to low 600lb. I'd imagine you'd be in the 300lb range +/- boned out

My bull elk I shot 2 years ago up in 7b weighed 792 on the hook 4 quarters bone in.

there was a rule of thumb but forget it exactly...but I think it was in thirds 1/3 meat 1/3 guts and 1/3 bones and hide....to give you live animal weight...does this sound right or at least in the ball park?....I guess I could try google but I am more interested in what people here say

It's the bull in my avatar, when i got the shoulder mount done the taxidemist had to bring in 3 different forms until he found one big enough and he said he still had to add mass to it and reform the muscle structure just to get the cape to fit properly and not have a ton of extra.

This bull was around 200 lbs boned out.
Horns and camping gear went out on the first trip (7 km).
Meat went out (2 people -100 lb packs) on the last trip.

I know now there are huge elk out there and have been told that west kootenay elk and van island elk are bigger than the east kootenay elk, that's why my comment for the chart weight being high was for my personal elk from the east kootenays

My stone this year weighed in at 56lbs boned meat plus both rib cages. Life size cape was 27lbs with a bit of leg bone left in the legs.

That would be a good average. Had them range from 80 to 158 lbs . . . best to keep them out of the creeks. ;)

Before I started eating my sheep at camp I would have been around 50 lbs of meat, skull/horn was 17 lbs and dried/salted lifesize cape was 10.5 lbs.

I read someheres that what you get back from the butcher on average is approximately 30% of an animals live weight. So your little spike whitetail will give you about 40lbs of meat (fits in a liquor store cardboard box). 600lb moose ......200lbs of boned meat. Probably not counting the liver, and heart.
Forgot to mention that my little spike was bow whacked , so there was no blood shot meat loss. Your typical magnum shoulder shot animal is going to cut down on your burger.

Shoot a moose and you need a meat flight.
