I was listening to Smithers local radio this morning and they were reporting a float plane crash and recovering of the body by search and rescue out of Terrace. Crash was between Dease lake and Telegraph creek. There was no names released and the float plane company was not mentioned.

Could have been a severe & uncontrollable downdraft. Back in the 70's a friend had a float plane & he told me about the dangers of flying low when close to a mountain & waterway.

The pilot wasn't lacking experience although he was new to the area.

Very sad.

A flying adage goes that the two worst things are:
1) heading out to the plane knowing it will be your last flight
2) heading out to the plane not knowing it will be your last flight

My condolences to the family.

Terrible news! Flying in the mountains can have many dangers and there are times which are unforeseen and unavoidable. There have been downdrafts that can exceed a aircraft's rate of climb and there is very little a pilot can do. I have had a couple and was lucky to get to stable air and maintain altitude.

Awful news. Possibility of a crash is always in my mind up there.

I was flying with Urs about 10 years ago, watching out the window excited for the upcoming hunt.
Next thing I know I'm staring straight down at the treetops and boulders, my face against the glass and the engine is full throttle, as we hairpin turned along the mountain side to escape a downdraft.....major pucker factor. Was a pretty quiet and reserved unload at the lake shore.

Did some research on Tsayta Airlines, Telegraph Creek & came with the following.

Wilderness Exploration
2012. Mount Edziza Plateau, Northwestern British Columbia. Nine-day trek with Kate Binhammer from Buckley Lake to Mowdade Lake across volcanic slopes, obsidian fields and tussocky terrain, inhabited by Osborne caribou, Stone sheep, grizzlies, black Bears and wolves.Traditional Tahltan territory, and geological wonder of the Stikine Plateau. Float plane support by veteran pilot Rick Woodman,Tsayta Airlines, Telegraph Creek.

Up drafts too, I've had a couple that took my hands right off the controls!
Alone in the middle of nowhere, never been so freaked out...

He was in very bad shape and recently had somehow managed to get his medical back, scared the hell out of a bunch of people in the week before he crashed

I had heard the same story last Saturday. He just got cleared to fly again. He loved to fly and died doing what he loved. I hope I can go out like that, I do not want to have to have someone feed me and wipe my butt in a nursing home.

Can you elaborate on that? What happened EXACTLY, to scared the BUNCH of people? Are you sure it was health related? If so, how was it health related? Did he have a heart attack, seizure, or was it a case of poor judgement, due to dementia or something else? Might it just have been because of of turbulence, wind sheer, visibility issues, or some other weather-related reason?

Are you saying that the crash was also health related?

Just wondering.

Thanks for the info.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
The reason I thought there was a strong possibility is because the airline has only a handful of pilots.
Also from a 2015 newsletter
......Thanks to Rick Woodman of Tsayta Aviation for egg and grocery delivery flights and for this project... Pg 11
