I am in the market for an air rifle to take along on my moose hunt this Sept. Primary use will be for ditch chickens and the occasional rabbit and racoon. I'd appreciate any recommendations on specific models and best hunting pellets.

I know that I want at least a 22 cal spitting out pellets somewhere around 750fps and up, with a decent trigger, & scope. I'd like to keep the price under $250 but not sure if that is possible. Anyone have one they would like to sell?

Why do you want 22 cal?

Think the 177 is faster more accurate and would kill grouse with right pellets.

I have a Gamo 177 pellet gun that shoots at 1250 fps.It has a scope and is quite accurate. The 22 with 22 shorts is quieter though. The Gamo has shot many rabbits and grey squirrels.I think I payed around $150 for it.

Just wondering why you want a pellet gun and not a 22 rifle? I had a pellet gun that was rated at 1250 fps it was bigger and heavier than my Ruger 10/22. My pellet gun was quieter than 22lr ammo but louder than 22cb ammo

Agree. 177 will do the trick for grice rabbitt if yer close enough, racoon 177 or 22 ..aaah no. Get the pointy pellets. May has well just carry a 22 and shootem with shorts, acorns like they called them in the before time. lol

Rule of thumb in the AG World is.

177 for target. and .22 is For hunting. .22 is a heavier pel and transmits far more energy at impact.

You're right, a .22 will be perfect for hunting, and I'd recommend the Crossman Nitro Venom .22, it's 900 fps and accurate for $240 at D&L Airguns! They have some decent scopes on the site for about $150...designed for spring piston air rifles. Polymag and JSB Exact King are some of the most accurate and effective hunting pellets...of course, like centrefire rifles, you have to buy a box of each and see what your rifle likes. If you want an air rifle to hand down to your grandkids, the Diana 460 Magnum underlever springer keeps the barrel fixed for excellent accuracy and sends the pellets at 850 fps.

Most accurate is the Benjamin pump with the bolt. But I would just get a .410 shotgun and call it a day. Unless you want to do lots of plinking in camp. Get a break action or a side cocking for quicker reloads... All but the .410 will be too slow for multiple shots though.
