Browning BLR in 22-250 perhaps?

Varmint (I'm assuming you mean coyotes and the like) calibers mostly come in pointy bullets....don't lend themselves well to tubular magazines.

Browning BLR is about it.
maybe a Savage 99 in 243( 55gr handloads)

Define 'varmint type'.
Yotes at longer distances...or 200 yd. gophers?
BLR, Savage 99 or Winchester 88 all have clips for the pointy bullets.
The caliber will determine which one.
The 'varmint type' will determine which Caliber.

A BLR as everybody has said or look for a Savage 99 in 250 and have re-barreled to 22-250.
I've thought about trying that myself..

I have a 300 Savage take down and I made a 250-3000 and a 22-250 barrels for it. There are older savages in 5.7x54R (22 Savage HP) . I also have a 25-20Win a screamer of a varmiter in 1892...lol it is a blast to shoot and under 150 yds a tack driver with peep sights. Levers are fun so just go shoot em.

I've never seen a clip fed levergun before. Pretty sure they don't exist, except the russian versions of the M1895.

All Browning Lever Rifles and the newer Savage 99's were clip feed. The older Savages had an internal rotary magazine allowing the use of pointed bullets. The winchester 88's also had a mag. I had one in 284 win fun gun

At one time Savage magazines had the word " clip " stamped on them.
Savage referred to the 99 C model as " clip fed ".

I know that incorrect but there you have it.

A Fad.

They are accurate but very light.

I prefer a 22lr over them for killing power. And a 22mag is even better yet.

If you want a good lever 17HMR, I had a Ruger 9417 year ago that was deadly accurate and 25 round magazines are readily available for. I bought it new at Del Selins. (It was also the cartridge turn-off for me).

I was in a gopher derby in Saskatchewan that year. I'd CX them in the chest and they all wiggle down the hole. Then it got expensive fast.
I had way more recoveries with 22lr and finished out at just over 2500 tails in 9 days. Not bad, the winner (which I'm sure was a bunch of buddies) ended up with 6900+ a few over the entire summer.

For a 17hmr, I'd recommend the Ruger 9417.
For a better alternative in lever, go with a BLR 223. It's almost the same price to shoot with so many advantages.

And accuracy in both guns are great.

I competitor at a shoot I was at last month had a Browning BLR rebarrelled and chambered to 6 Dasher, it never shot over a 10" group at 1040 yards all week-end. If your not into forming cases a 6 BR would work as well.

My experience with the 17HMR on prairie dogs is the 17 gr V-max style bullet (plastic tip) is a lot better than any of the hollow point bullets for anchoring them and greatly superior to the .22LR. And I also found that the HMR has about twice the comfortable range of a .22LR for that use (175 yds versus 85 yards or so in my hands) and much less affected by wind at any given distance. Anyway, I've been a fan of the .17 HMR for small varmint use for the past 14 years and use it preferential to a .22LR, but still appreciate and own .22LRs as well.

if you want a varmint gun in lever then the BLR or Savage 99 are the guns you'd be looking at. If you want a light plinker then you could also look at levers in a pistol caliber or 22LR.

Several OLD cartridges were built in 22 and 25 caliber, and there are wildcats on the 30-30 that could work.
Also some modern levers in pistol cartridges could be used, depending on the circumstances, he!! even the basic 30-30 would do.

If you're looking to shoot gopher size varmints a bl 22 octogon has got to be the most classy gun for the job.

Tell that to the BLR 222 I've been packing for 25+ years!

Although the same in 22-250 might be a tad more applicable for "varmints"

Cheers,

If you could find an old win 94 in 25-35. Hard to find and hard to find shells for but if your into casting...
