View Full Version : Finally introducing myself

So I've been quietly taking things in here for about a year now and thought I'd finally introduce myself.

I could probably be described as a mid 30's, mini-van dad living in the city, adult-onset hunter. I took my CORE and Pal last summer with a friend of mine and was able to make it out on two short trips for deer last fall, but didn't get anything. Learned a lot about what I may be needing for gear and physical fitness. Been spending a lot of time learning from this forum, youtube, and podcasts and am very excited to get out in the woods again. My wife's already told me I need to go on at least 3 or 4 hunting trips in the fall (she's awesomely supportive of my new hobby!)

I'm hopefully trying to sell the minivan and get something 4 wheel drive, but if that doesn't happen and you see a minivan down some dirt road somewhere, it might just be me.

And a joke:

I ran into my ex girlfriend the other day....
So I put the car in reverse and ran into her again.

- Randy

Welcome aboard...and congrats on venturing into the hunting/shooting world.

What are you using for a deer rifle?

Welcome, we are a rather fractious bunch, but, there are some REAL expert bushmen-hunters here and we are all pretty decent folks....well, one certain old Kootenay geezer maybe excepted..... ;)

Way to go joining the he-man league of hunters/fisherman! But boy we have some go getter gals on here too; who whack=em and stack=em! When I lived down in the lower mainland we used to day trip up the hope Princeton and hunt grouse and deer off of some of the easier FSR'S and sometimes just a little walk was all it took to get your game walk away from the Budweiser army and you'll be fine without a huge investment in crap like quads and fancy things, learn how to process your game quickly and efficiently and cut your deer in half so you can pack it or drag it on a 1.99 crazy carpet and you'll be eatin right in no time! good luck...Horsee

Randy. I married your ex. And the tire tracks didn't make her any prettier. LOL. Welcome to the club. Where are you located?

Trying to match or top the energy and wittiness of the above seems fruitless, and I've been at it for a bit. So, welcome man, enjoy, your wife's support is paramount ...and don't discard the minivan, they come in handy

drag it on a 1.99 crazy carpet

That's genius! Just gotta make sure it stays on the carpet...gorilla glue?

And Welcome! I'm in the same boat...but no minivan (although an Outback isn't too far off).

Welcome to HBC. And that is great your wife is supportive of your new interest in hunting. Maybe down the road you can get her involved to.
And nothing wrong with a minivan. It still can get you out hunting. Just have to walk more. No need to spend lots of money on a 4x4.

Welcome! Same boat as you - mid 30's, couple of kids... Sold the Outback but bought a 4 Runner. Lots of great learning opportunities here. Good luck this season!

Welcome. Lots of good people and information here. Took me a skunked season before I was able to connect with anything. Good luck this fall.

It's only a mini-van in the city, in the bush it's a mini mobile hunting camp......

Welcome! The joke should have read 'put the MINIVAN in reverse and ran in to her again' but that's okay :) Don't get discouraged! I connected in year 2, and have been skunked ever since but that's okay!! The more I learn, the more I realize I'm only just beginning to learn!

Welcome.

Make sure you upgrade from "P" tires on your mini van, if you haven't already.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

RiverOtter - I have a Remington 700 30.06

Horse280 - Good advice. Definitely looking to actually go hunting in the woods rather than drink Budweiser with the warriors

Ruger#1 - Sorry to hear, I guess we've all made some decisions under the influence of stupid . You can keep her. I just moved to east Vancouver in December. Was out in Langley before that.

everyone else - thanks for the minivan encouragement. Glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's a good idea to put a dead animal in back. The car seats might come in handy at that point.

Welcome Randy,

Great site, tons of info on here as you already know. Bit of mudslinging here and there, but boys will be boys.

A good buddy of mine once said 'the only thing better than a truck is a friend with a truck.'. Pick your hunting partner wisely and that minivan will be a great investment.

Lots of good memories don't have a dead animal attached... enjoy the process of learning to hunt. Even the old guys on here are still learning.

Thanks Iron Glove. Yeah it felt a bit backwards bringing our 3 kids from the burbs of Walnut Grove to East Van. But it's a central location for work and we're making it happen with frugal and creative living in a basement suit. We're finding that if we ignore most cultural norms and learn to enjoy people and experiences more than "stuff", we can live out our dreams within our modest budget.

Well said - enjoy the area, there is a lot that we miss from East Van, like try to get decent Chinese Food in Hope.
