Im in the market for a new rifle & scope for the upcoming season. The total budget is 3 - 4k and so far I am leaning towards a 300 wsm.

Please share any ideas you have good or bad. Pros and Cons

Thanks everyone who shares

I'll get the thread started...

Moose and elk? And pretty much everything else in BC other than birds and bunnies?

7mm Rem Mag. Tikka T3 Lite. Sako if you want to spend more.

Don't buy a sniper scope with magnification up to 20x. Don't buy a .375 Ruger scope with magnification from 1-4x. Buy something in the 3-9x range with the best clarity you can identify when looking through multiple scopes at the store. I like Leupold vx3, also like the high-end Vortex, but your mileage may vary.

I'd suggest waiting until BBD lists any one of his rifles, but that is what I'm doing and I wouldn't want to give my strategy away.

That same combo in any of .270, .280 or 30.06.

Buy my new, unused unfired Kimber Mountain Ascent in 300WSM. I had to cancel my fly in trip so the rifle is unneeded this year. Send me PM if interested. I have a Vortex Viper HS-LR 4-16x50 i can add to the deal.

An aside here, I do not intend to "list" my rifles here and if someone is interested, they should PM me and go from there. I require full name and phone number in the first PM or I delete it and put the sender on "ignore" as I have no time for speculators or tirekickers.

If, the OP is interested in pre-owned, but, very choice rifles, I may well have something that he would find perfect for his intended uses. I do respond to PMs promptly if the above conditions are met.

x2 on the Vortex.
If you are spending 2g on a rifle, nothing wrong spending the same on the scope.

Is this going to be strictly a hunting rifle? I'd stick with the old magnums like the 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag.

A remington 700 5R in 308 or 300 win mag or tikka varmint in 7mm rem. Pencil barrels do nothing for me.

Kinda hard to find fault in vortex at it's price. Been in the market for a new scope for 6 months and keep coming back to the vortex.

The 300 short mag is a good calibre, I would say a Model 70 with a Zeiss Conquest would be the perfect combination and leave a few dollars for ammunition and accessories.

Weatherby Mark V Accumark, runs around 1700$ at Cabelas atm.
leaves you plenty of money for a solid scope and change.

Caliber, I'd have to say I'm subjective to 30-06, but that's because I've started with it, I'm super happy with the range of factory loaded ammo, and its availability. Anyway, enough said!

Also, if weight is an issue for you, try finding one of the Mark V Ultralight models, Canadian Tire just brought over the Northmark (new version of UL) weighing in at 5.25lbs sans scope. That's a 3k rifle I found in Ultralight for 1700$. But good luck finding it now. Again, caliber of choice would be 30-06

And I know I'll get some flack, and Clarke will ban me for owning a 30-378, but I do, it's just that it's a too stupid of a cartridge to own for every day business. It's more like here's my boom stick, it's BOOMIER than your .30 cal. Don't ask, friend got me into it, I have way too much stuff for it to toss it out the window (shells, ammo etc) I'll try it out this fall on some big game, will set it up for some LR shots.

Next rifles will most likely be 375 Ruger or H&H and definitely a 45/70.

I don't think I would consider BS the end all be all of information but it can offer some good info but like anything you have to figure out how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I recently picked up a browning xbolt 300 wsm and put a leupold vx-3L with the Boone & crocett illuminated reticle with 32mm tube 56mm front objective and I really like for an all around hunting rifle!! The xbolts action is one of the lowest profiles on the market and the leupold vx-3L line of scopes also is low profile with the bell knotched out to get it right down low, when I'm shooting it, it feels as I'm looking down the barrel!!

Great choice. Very reliable rifle and scope, and all that most would need for any species in BC

Hmm 7mm caliber...Sako..out of box under 1 inch acurracy..ss action..synthetic stock..maybe the sako 85..
Sako scope mounts..Optilock system
Leupold 3.5......10 variable..with Cds system..
Rifle should be $2,000
Scope should be $1,000

Results priceless..
30..06 would be second choice.
After talking with expert marksman with 25 years of stand up shooting he felt Weatherby was problematic as well Browning...with his experience..results at shooting championship events..I am no one to argue..but did have my own poopy results and frustrating experience with Browning rifle and then lack of help from company.
Sako has been awesome...

I know for a fact my 264/140 Berger will create more bloodshot than a 300wsm Barnes. It comes down to billet construction/speed more so than caliber...

I could go for that too, but better yet, in 300WSM. Would go lower in scope magnification too, though. Something like 2-12. But that's just me.

if you have that kind of money spend away but you can get a beauty set up for much less! I shoot a 300wsm browning xbolt and I would put that up against any rifle twice its price and I paid 900$ forit, 1000$ ish you can get a great scope unless you are shooting isis from 3 k out 2000+ $ long range scopes are a waste of money. I have shot moose at 500 yrds with my old baush & lomb to each there own but around 2000 total you can be set right up nice..... take the other 2k and take the wife to an all inclusive resort for a week gain hunting brownie points!!! :)
