Crabbing in Victoria

Hey fellas,

Going to be in Victoria for a couple weeks and would like to bring my traps along. Any piers in the Victoria area that you can recommend? I hear red rocks are quite common and large compared to on the mainland.

You can fish off the Sidney pier, or a kayak or canoe can out you in good crab areas around willows beach or Cordova bay. Just remember, every legal crab will have been pulled up and tossed back 100 times minimum. It's basically agriculture ;-)

you have a boat? there is a 35 foot bar coming into sidney spit (can't miss it tons of floats) that is pretty productive sometimes. the sidney pier is good for rock crabs and the odd dungy.

Big Bad Johns is a good place for a crab trap.....

Probably not, especially with legal dungeness. You might get a bunch of rock crabs. It gets picked over pretty well, as does anywhere easily accessible. James Island road wharf also out in Saanich is another place. You can catch flounder there while your traps soak.

Sooke also has a fishing pier that can be good for crabbing.

If your fishing from shore. James island dock will be one of your only bets. Lots of real stinky bait and check every hour!

Yep, park at Rotary Park in Sooke. Walk the path down to the pier. Stinky bait on a good tide, and you'll do well. Always caught crabs there, and 10 Dungees for every one Rock it seemed....
