I haven't hunted black bears since 1994, with at least 12 to my credit. So this year I decided I would go out and try to harvest a little "meat bear".Went to our farm and in just half a day of hunting I saw 5 bears! After missing a real big one, I shot this 3 year old boar.
Gutted him out, skinned him, and now he's hanging in our walk in fridge. Haven't eaten bear meat in years...

Way to go! Should be good eats for sure.

Just curious how you can tell it is a 3 year old?

If it looks bigger than 175lbs and there's no mom around, I figure it's older than 2, but I have no idea how to tell 2, vs 4, vs 4, vs 8, etc. Is it just a matter of experience and going by the size of the teeth?

Nice bear!
So you are hanging your bear? How long do you do this?
I have just cooled it down then freeze or process.

People who see 30 to 40 bears a year learn to guess it's age. The ears and how they walk are good clues.

+1

tell tale signs:
-roundness of the head
-ears apart for mature ones.
-tall looking bear ...young one vs a mature "rounder" looking well fed boar or sow

Nothing like fresh game meat. I just had my first bear sausages of the year at dinner. Yum!

Congrats on a fine bear!
