Hey gents,

Any recommendations on tripod height for glassing? Still getting set up for this season.

I have an old Optex T265 that will probably do all I need - I think it goes up to just about eye level on me (6') and weighs in at about 3.5 lbs.

I know that you can get the carbon fibre tripods that weigh about 2 lbs or so, like the Slik 624 that's so well regarded but it's only about 45" high. Do you do most of your glassing sitting down?

Just trying to figure out if it's worth paying $75 for the Amazon Basics one (https://www.amazon.ca/AmazonBasics-52-Inch-Carbon-Travel-Tripod/dp/B00DHPCSA0/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1464641237&sr=8-7&keywords=amazon+basics+tripod) (25% off for Prime members) to save a pound or so.

A pound on the back definitely adds up on a big bush hike, but just curious as to what I'm missing on the tripod height issue.

The tripod I bought this year. So far i've been really impressed with it. Looks like it may be even lighter than the carbon (at least shipping weight) and has the extra height for standing and glassing.

I was looking at the Slik 634 and the 624 and after some advice from a few sheep hunters and thinking I usually sit when glassing for extended periods in conjunction with the spotter, I bought the Slik 624 and the Surui K10 ball head, the 624 also is more compact for storage on my pack.

I prefer to sit while glassing. The higher you go, the more the wind can mess with you.

For whatever reason I've had a hard time spending money on a tripod and finally my wife got me one for our anniversary. She was smart and got advise from my hunting partner and went with a promaster 325c, it's quite long when folded but they do make a 525c version that's quite a bit shorter and extends to the same height. They are a direct copy of the gitzo mountaineer and are a good buy, sturdy, lightweight and you can extend them to standing height. You don't have to use all the available leg length all the time but it's sure nice when you need it. There's a review somewhere comparing the promaster and the slik 624 and it comes out in favour of the promaster and I tend to agree with it. For roughly 350 cdn you get a set of legs with ball head and there's really no reason to replace it unless you want a pan head.

I use a Slik CF613 and will most likely never replace it. Amazing and under 2lbs without ball head. Mine is 40oz with a solid Manfrotto ball head.

Search and search and maybe you'll be able to track one down.

Ultra cheap here…Vortex ss-p
2lbs with their supplied pan head. 54" tall. Works just fine for my bino's and my light little Razor 11-33X50 spotter.
I like to sit….

If I had an 80mm spotter I would get into something more stout...

A friend of mine has the vortex with a ball head and I cant see a whole of difference other than his is 1/2 lb lighter than the one I have and works just fine.

Ive been looking at both sliks and the xc52c. The xc325c looks pretty damn good too, just doesnt compact as much as the 525, but thats ok. And available in Canada, thanks for the link

Meant to report - I got the Amazon one...seems to do the trick. 2 lbs 6 oz on the kitchen scale...2 lbs 9 oz in the case. Not bad. I've only set it up in my living room so far, so not exactly testing its mettle.
