yes its almost that time for me too...never bought any new ones this year and a couple are probably on their way out...oh well 25 cameras are bit too much to manage. Looking fwd to this thread as you always seem to get some nice animals on your cameras.

And so its starts hey Wayne. Did that bear totally wreck that camera? Its too bad if he did. Might have to start bringing a ladder to put them up 8-9ft up the tree lol. Im heading in this weekend to either camp or do day trips with the family to start my process. Thanks for once again sharing with all of us here. One of the threads I cant wait to watch yearly.

Not sure how a lot of you are attaching your cameras. I remove the webbing strap that comes with it and use bailing wire. I'm able to cinch the camera on tighter to the tree. The wire doesn't have a scent to attract animals. And it helps the camera blend in and not be quite so conspicuous.

hey that's a good tip for sure..i could see how cinching it tight into the bark a bit would even help prevent the toe nails from hooking up like they can on the strap

Ouch!

Wayne you could try getting them higher with a tree step like this but it's pain to set them sometimes as you have to find something to step up on.

http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/vv133/Stubby_01/misc/simmons%20treestep%20mount_zps8uozqql5.jpg

But I've found the best is to weld up an enclosure and lock it down with a python lock.
I use bed frame angle cuz it's free and the python lock is easy to snug tight.
The extra $20 for the python and some time to build the box are well worth it.

The trail cam that the bear was clawing at is still working the bear did crack the view screen cover but still works I will be getting a 3 foot aluminum stepladder to take in to put my trail cams up about 9 feet..I have to do a full trail cam check this weekend changing the cards and battery as for replenishing the salt blocks..

^^ I was out checking my cams, exchanging cards and batteries last weekend. It's a lot of work, as I'm monitoring about 10 locations ..... I file a "flight" plan with my family before I leave, with a strict agenda so they know where I am at all times. And of course I check back in when I return to cell service.

Bummer about the camera Wayne. FWIW it did make a pretty cool video and at least the bear left it pointing roughly were it was pointing originally. I don't mind cameras getting roughed up as long as they still work, but I am a bit heart broken if I miss footage. Keep the pics/vids coming! Wildlife viewing is my next favorite hobby to hunting and fishing.

You two should sit around the fire with a bunch of kids (or adults) all listening to the crazy unbelievable stories of them Big Foots up there. Jokes aside, we need more kids out fishing, hunting then we need video games and TV.

The chances are slim that the big buys will be where I caught these bulls on my trail cam now the cows take the bulls some distances away from where I caught them on this trail cam it's up to me to find out where the cows are within the next month from when this picture was taken I have a few other trail cams not to far away will see if there are cows on the trail cams not to far away from where these bulls are right now ,,heard bulls will travel a long ways herding up cows once the rut kick in in late Aug..

I need to add a few more cams myself. I'll give that one a look.

Putting out salt blocks there is a ton of cattle, do the cows just dominate the salt block? Fill the cam with pics of cows even if you do get some game on it?

Any general advice for putting out cams where the cows are hanging out into the fall?

Do trail cams make a click noise when they take a picture??? It seems like the animals look directly into the camera as if they hear something? I don't own one so I am just curious.
Thanks

Your question inspired me to Google it. I've always assumed they are aware it is there. Either with the light or noise. It is very common to see them take a glance or be locked on it as you say.

Super interesting article on it.

http://themanagementadvantage.com/home/trail-cameras-are-we-spooking-deer-unintentionally/

They did a bunch of "testing", quite extensive actually. But self admitedly not scientific nor something one should take as absolute.

Short version...

The flash and sounds wasn't the deal breaker.

Scent was a good part of it. Suggested being much more careful about leaving you stink behind. In their case they used the odour eliminating sprays. Including on the camera and camera box. JT's suggestion to use bailing wire would help too. As I am sure the fabric straps are holding a ton of scent.

It was the fact a new object existed that was unfamiliar to the animals who frequent the area on a consistent basis. You'd have read the whole thing to get the full picture, pun intended.

But a new camera in a heavily used area by critters can cause them to take note. On the other hand, they grow used to it and they saw the critters be totally fine with the cams.

Very short version and I probably didn't do it justice but enough of summary for those not wanting to read the beast of an article.

I think Wayne and others tend to have their cams in similar spots year after year. Critters get used to it which I am sure their young notice. Mommy isn't worried about that box, so why would I? Then think nothing of it as they move onto being the older wiser critters. This part is my theory, which may or may not be valid.

There is no good advice on your answer the only thing you can do is still put out the salt block in the same area check the trail cam every two weeks and set the cam to only one or two pictures set the trail cam to 2 or 3 time delay not one min..

Sure you're going to get pictures of cattle but you will still get pictures of game animals make sure you have a big memory card 8gb or bigger so you won't fill your cam up having to many pic of cattle,,cattle are somewhat the same as elk they will have a short time at your salt block and move on they might not return for a 3 or 4 days ..

A person might have to put out more salt block in time but at least you're getting picture from game animals within the area there is nothing else you can do when cattle are in the area except don't put your trail cam in an area where there is cattle..

My dog, much to my dismay, took a big crap while I was setting up a camera a few weeks ago. He's a class act.

Within a day, I had bears, deer, and moose tip-toeing through the dog turds to get at the salt.

That is one helluva a pile of crap if they had to walk through it instead of around it. I'm impressed.

Were they in a congo line? Or purposely took turns stepping in it? Was the bear riding the moose? Oh I guess not if it tip toed in it too.

My dog is a "walker" when he craps. 10 foot long string of land mines.

The bears seem to follow the scent of the ungulates, do a quick sniff where the ungulates have stood, and go. Haven't had more than a single pic of any of the bears at one time. The deer and moose hang around and return to the salt - I got about 100 pics of the same doe!

Those are the best to clean up behind in places you have to pick up their souvenirs. It's like reading a line of a braille book.

Interesting about the bear coming in and then moving on. I'm off to put some cams out.

Curious to see how many cows vs critters I get.

I like Wayne's point. Who cares how many cows you get as long as you get confirmation there are critters there too.
