Mom took this bear picture a few days ago and sent it to me. He seemed really healthy otherwise, wandering around and chowing down. Can't tell for certain, but guessing this this is an older boar who met his match and didn't back down. Any other guesses?

He is old alright, the fang is certainly well yellowed heading for brown.

Have a bear from mid-Island .... 20 3/16" ....
His nose had been bitten and crushed sometime in the past.
The thin bone of the nose bridge had fused into a lumpy mass.
When I was glassing him .... (looking down on him) he looked very short-nosed and deformed, and I was going to 'pass' on him. Good body length at 7.0'
Skull was larger than expected .... aged at 15yrs.

The bear pictured looks short-nosed also, but appears to be younger (maybe not the dominant boar yet) ....... then again, looks can fool you!
Good pictures, and thanks for posting them.

It could be. I wish I had a better picture of the forehead.

Definitely has the look of a younger breeding age sow. Maybe she incurred the damage defending her cub(s) from a boar.......

Way too fine of features, IMO, to be a mature boar.

Nice sharp points too , not so old. Seems to have wintered well .

I called her up and asked if she had any pictures with a good view of the forehead and ears. She says she'll check and then emails me this picture, but says not to show anyone because it's "not a good picture" (something about the bright sun white-washing the background?) ... apparently photographers are picky. I called her back and said it was an awesome bear picture and nobody cares about the background and can I please post lol. I now have permission!

Younger bear ..... broken upper mandible/jaw.
Much better photo.

Look at the ears. Pretty small for the melon. Sticking with the male gender. Might not be as old as I first thought. Schnoz looks like it has been twisted, nose canted to the right. Looks like gangarine or vegitation between nose and teeth. Suntanned if it were late August or September

If female, you'd think that there would be some cubs around, unless she is too ugly to do.

Cubs could have been killed or she's only just reached sexual maturity.

I wouldn't doubt if it got hit by a vehicle. Only the bear knows.

It's a tough life being a single Mom in the woods. I took these pics a few years ago of this big boar looking to eat some baby bears. The Mom was pretty upset being tailed by this big bruiser. Not sure how it ended.

Interesting fact:
Infanticide among bears is natural but rare. Boars that encounter sows with cubs will sometimes kill the cubs to initiate estrus and breeding.
